    Funding didn't stop the freeway system or the irrigation projects with dams all over the country. Whatever happened to vision and just getting it done? We need and want high speed rail connecting every major city of over 500,000. Spokane to Seattle, is my corridor. The train would be very popular rather than flying. It's too short to fly, too far to drive. But the high speed rail would be just perfect. Plus the winter commute would be better than driving or flying!! We saw the airports and highways get closed down because of ice storm.

      Simply upgrade the existing right of way and enforce the passenger service priority law. Amtrak takes eight hours to travel the 279 miles. An average speed on 70 mph would take four hours. Spokane would need a population of several million to justify HSR. Brightline is the best example.

      In Florida, a planes stop flying because of lightning storms in the summer. Often are delayed for many many hours plus it takes often very long time to get through security and Florida airports because of long lines. It is a popular tourist state.
      I’d rather have a choice and take the train. At least Brightline train is coming to Orlando airport hopefully soon this year. It’s already running between Miami, Fort Lauderdale and west palm and much more often than Amtrak.!!!

      Much more, actually.... Since the cost of construction through the mountains would drive the price to at least 5-10 times the cost of a flat-land route. Not only would Spokane need a population on par with the Greater Seattle area (3-4 million) but you would also want a few cities along the route of 500K or more, each with robust local transit networks that would allow for door-to-door trips for the majority of their residents. That's the sort of population density that justifies HSR. But, that does not exist in interior Washington.
      Washington's sole hope for HSR is a link between Seattle Tacoma, Vancouver (WA), & Portland which is much closer to flat.... But still lacks the population density and public transit along the route to make it practical.

    I strongly support the building of higher speed and excellent passenger trains-we must also build dedicated rail to support these higher speed passenger trains!!! Doing so will eliminate long delays by the freight rail industry-just do it Amtrak make the necessary change to get dedicated rail for our passenger trains!!!

    "Congress should find ways to relieve congestion improve safety, and increase people's access to jobs and other economic oppurtunities."
    High speed rail does all of those things. Roads are just as difficult to build. For example: I-69 has been delayed for DECADES, and has gone way over budget. Bringing people off the roads and onto high-speed trains will also reduce road repair costs and congestion.

    I think HSR is good and will work for regional areas such as Northeast Coridoor, FL, CA, & TX. I'd also use it in NC if Raleigh to Charlotte to Atlanta GA. However given the distance and mountain crossings, I don't see it ever being done cross-country. Even at 150 mph average, its 20 hours coast to coast vs 5 on a plane. At a more likely 100 mph average, its 30 hours! Plus stops.

    In some city / metro areas such as Los Ángeles, fares cover 70% of operating costs for their metro system of trains and buses which is average to above average compared to international comparisons. The unspoken reason we need the HSR is that the cost of fossil carbon fueled airplanes could skyrocket if those fuels become scarce and that our civilization is already at risk due to climate change - electric transportation is vital for that and reduced pollution. Electric planes are in development but several more generations of battery improvements is necessary to approach the energy density required. Maybe satélite charging of airplanes in flight

    USA's old Boeing 707 airlines had pure jet engines, which were louder than modern turbofan jet engines used on airlines
    it was annoyingly loud even sitting inside the passenger compartment
    and worse for children, who have more sensitive hearing, it was wearisome
    I know, and hated it
    plus, when young, one doesn't know how to adjust to cabin pressure changes, which can be painful to one's inner ear
    only as one learns to open one's eustachian tubes voluntarily, can one easily equalize air pressure between one's inner and outer ear, which eliminates any pressure change discomfort

      HSR is necessary for an important reason ... to replace the sound of a Boeing 707 from sixty years ago. It was fun when flying as a kid to feel the ears pop. Sorry if you have bad memories. I understand you because I have always had sensitive ears also. What is a worse noise is hearing a disgusting, barking dog on the train that stupid Amtrak allows. Send dogs to the Phillipines for a dinner entree.

      @@davidjackson7281 airplanes allow dogs sometimes on a carry-on on. People say they are a emotional support animal that they don’t have to pay extra for and they take under the seat but I saw one of those dogs that are supposedly trained, go to the bathroom on the carpet in the airport.

    They talk about 4 trillion cost maybe. But do you know how much you save when traveling on rail bs airline and car? Not mention what that means for mobility of people for work? Isn’t there a reason brightline and texas railway are putting their own money into building rail if it’s a waste of time

      You will see CAHSR operating in 2029 long before a camel jocky rides a bike or passes his driver's license examination. Brightline Florida in 2023 will run to Orlando with a top speed exceeding 200 kpm. Perhaps you may wish to consider pounding sand. Hahaha! LOL!

Also they failed to say the northeast corridor is a very profitable route even when they are handcuffed with old and decaying infrastructure and Connecticut laws preventing speeds this video is just more right wing propaganda of privatization . Bright line only goes 80 miles an hour and acela can go 150 but track can’t support it currently constitute it

    The United States has paid for billions of dollars to increase the highway system and ever add more lanes to highways because of our car culture and we don’t have many other choices. Why not spend some money to make some other choices not everybody can drive such as older people that must take medicines and drive when it is dangerous for them and also dangerous for other people, they may hit.

      The primary driver for the increase in the highway system is not passenger transportation... But freight.
      The modern highway system vastly accelerated *both* the transport of goods by road AND by railroad, as the rails shifted from primarily inefficient single car transport of specific goods to highly efficient unit-train operation of bulk cargos and overland container freight, with "last-mile" delivery by trucks. Every good bought, sold, or manufactured in the United States benefits from the efficiency of America's freight transportation system.

      The Us makes a fortune off the goods transported by truck. Taxes, taxes are the way to go. Freight trains carry only 1/10th of truck freight, and that is all low value (and low tax) stuff like coal and grain.

    That the USA (and wider North American continent for that matter) is an ideal ready made template for High Speed Rail should be obvious to all but the most biased/partisan of observers so perhaps the question posed here should be; Why hasn't it happened? The answer of course is rampant interference in the democratic political process on the part of well resourced corporate self-interest lobby groups, in toxic combination with powerful property laws and a deeply embedded culture of litigation.
    In a different environment, with sufficient political willpower and public support, High Speed Rail has the potential, within a generation, to revolutionise the nature of intra-continental travel across the USA and its immediate neighbours (Canada and Mexico).
    Readers only need to look at China to see what is possible in this field - in the ten year period, 2008 to 2018, 29000km (18000 miles) and counting, of High Speed Track (250km/h line speeds?) was constructed with more than that impressive total also under construction.

    What is holding back HSR?
    Perhaps it's the fact that often it makes poor economic sense.
    The only place where HSR does make sense is in transportation corridors that are 300-500km long between major cities, have low-grade alignments, and have plenty of towns (population density) along the route connecting robust local transportation networks. And it certainly helps if the right-of-way is already in public or passenger-railroad ownership. Which leads us to the fact that only two HSR routes actually generate enough revenue to pay for the cost of construction, operation, and maintenance. Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto) and France's TGV Sud-Est (Paris-Lyon). Every other HSR line has been a money losing affair....typically hidden by the national government assuming the infrastructure costs and letting private operators run the trains for an access fee that is less than the actual construction and maintenance costs. Hell, there are places where the government's subsidies amount to more than the price of passengers pay for each and every ticket. (I'm looking at you Spain, Italy, & China)
    America is particularly poor geographically for HSR, because it lacks the sort of population density along transportation routes typical in Europe of Asia to justify the high cost of infrastructure investment and maintenance that HSR requires. North America's geography is also cut by major obstacles to HSR construction like mountain ranges and major rivers that vastly boost the price of construction. Additionally, our rail networks are in profitable private ownership.....and are key to freight logistics in vast portions of the continent's interior.

      I don't think population density is the issue. The Northeast Corridor has as many people as the entire country of Spain (which has high-speed rail) in a smaller space, also in a line. Rail projects losing money through operation is not an issue either. Roads don't make money, airports don't make money, and yet they are all feasible modes of transportation. In fact, high-speed rail would make road upkeep cheaper because there will be less people on the highways. The one point that does make sense is private ownership of railroads. I would point out that tracks in Japan are owned by seven for-profit companies. So that too is also possible.

    Well there are three things. The US has the best freight rail system in the world but that means freight trains have right away on the tracks. So separate passenger rail tracks have to be built all over the Nation. Second most of the country doesn't have sufficient population density or has exceedingly long distances to travel making High-Speed rail impractical. Third that the US spends its money depending other countries who instead spend their money building High-Speed rail.
    The Chinese system what you showing your schematic has been proven to be too expensive for China and is ready to default on its bonds. Which simply proves the Chinese are irresponsible and deceitful.
