Hi Jay! How very kind of you to come by the room and hear the FR30s. Glad you had a chance to spend some time with them and sorry we didn't meet when I was there setting them up. Next year! CoViD will be over and we'll do the whole show. Cheers! Paul
Cheers from Sweden. I understand life hit you hard lately. I don't know what works for you but I try to get the sorrow and anger out of my system. Stay in balance. You are my go to reviewer on tonallity!
Jay glad your were able to keep it together and give the show report. And I hope your encouraged by all the encouragement from your audio pals.Made me smile. It ain't about what hits your it's how you handle the frequency response! (and I hope this kind of thing is not frequent but a one off).Peace
Kudos to the fact that you did not provide any in-depth comments as to sound from a show and non-reference system (yours)!! This is why I have "respect" for you and the dedication of this process.
I love Paul. I never miss a day of his content. But, in the end, Paul is a salesman. Jay...I value your opinion. You have heard some of the greatest speakers in the world. Honest to God...flat out...at 28, 000.00...do you think these are world beaters at this price point?
I would go to a show or 2. Some of these speakers sound properly other worldly. Some are expensive because name. Some are expensive because looks, and some are expensive because of part quality and price. Notice I never said they were expensive because they sound "the best" A speakers character cannot be defined by it's fr graph. The totality of the speaker must be experienced to understand it's sound. And there are MANY different ways thing can affect that sound to make a speaker sound better or worse for you. This is why auditioning speakers, like singers, is so important
Agreed, but calling Paul a salesman at the end of the day seems a bit of a disservice? I mean he is actually a designer/engineer/producer/innovator of a product, and sells it directly as well, but dealers will carry PS Audio equipment also. I don't see Paul as the typical ambitious, selfish, materialistic, greedy, snake oil salesman with one objective to separate you from your money? Top 3 at an international audio show is damn impressive, considering what it was up against product wise (Focal Grand Utopia's @ $120K , well over driven, are revered as a gold standard reference?), and then room tuning for a varying critical listening group... I suspect it was tuned more to the flat side via less sparkle from the tweeters being dimmed to show off the mids more for the super hardcore audiophiles who are high frequency sensitive... Asking Jay for a solid five gold star review from a short controlled sample is maybe asking just a bit much, especially if Jay or any other reviewer maybe want to get like a week long demo of them in the near future?
I heard these at the recent HiFi show in Melbourne and I also thought they were the sound of the show! They were being driven by a $A7k integrated amp and sounded amazing playing Tidal sourced material. I can imagine how good they would be playing physical media such as SACD or vinyl.
You still have hifi shows in Melbourne?. Here in Perth they seemed to die out long ago. I seriously can't remember when a real hifi show was in town. It's something I miss.
Hi Jay WHY DO THEY ALWAYS PLAY "SAFE MUSIC" AT AUDIOPHILE SHOWS (Music that is not dynamic easy to play: Example Norah Jones) ON THE MOST EXPENSIVE SPEAKERS 🤔 You never hear them play AC/DC's Thunderstruck or Yanni's Santorini. Any Speakers over 5k should be able to play anything in the world.
Just LOVE this! I share your enthusiasm and initial thoughts about PS Audio's carefully built loudspeakers. Look forward to checking out more about your assessment later on...
Paul's room is the bomb. I just think spending $100,000 or more to play my dumb old cd's and records ive had for 45 years is pretty much INSANE, and I don't even own a DAC or Stream or even own a preamp. Im more of a Music/AudioPhile and and half audiophile cause I love stereo gear also, but the extremely high end I would just never do that even if I could.... Things in the audio world can get very bizarre and outrageous as we all know but this is still such an awesome hobby to have and I still want to own like 20 pairs of various speakers amongst other gear as well. Super awesome hobby.
"I still want to own like 20 pairs of various speakers amongst other gear as well" So you actually do want to spend $100k, but just not on high end stuff, got it.
Eager to hear more about the show. Any new product announcements? Any new music that caught your attention? What were the top 3 rooms & what music & gear did they use? Really enjoying your videos!
I didn’t find it dark. Perhaps warm and non-fatiguing but no way did I find it dark or veiled. Personally I do prefer a slightly more brighter sound but knowing PS Audio’s house sound… I found it well balanced and a good representation of the original ps audio sound signature.
Jay, I enjoyed spotting you and Tujan at the show. If I am understanding your comments correctly, you are saying that you felt that the speakers could perform really well but did not fully live up to their potential in the room that they found themselves in. If that is what you were saying, then I am with you. I thought that they sound, as Crinacle might say, "fine". They were enjoyable but I definitely heard other speakers at the show that I enjoyed more (in the rooms where they were found) including the much less expensive Acoustic Energy speakers (in a much smaller room) that Thomas commented favourably on. Having watched two videos where Paul installed these speakers in MUCH smaller rooms and then seriously sweated the room treatment and speaker position, I was surprised that the room was not treated more than it was and, to my ear, that was part of why I enjoyed them less than I might have. In any event, I enjoyed this video and look forward to more from the "Salon". I know it will be little consolation but you join a list of luminaries who have had their equipment stolen in Montreal that includes the Rolling Stones and Iggy and the Stooges.
They won't be sold out forever... Are you going to buy them and then send them to Amir? (I doubt it.) Amir doesn't buy $hit, he has people send him equipment to test. If I'm spending 30k I'm sure as hell not going to spend big bucks and send them to Amir. The more shipping and handling the more chances of damage.
I've watched the videos where Paul and his engineer installed the first ones they sold. What a beautiful speaker ! I have tons of nudells needless to say a huge fan of Paul as well. They look amazing., It looks like a lifestyle product that would fit in a household that can afford them. Would love to hear a set, who knows one day.
I wonder how the psaudio speaker compares to the KEF Blade II? From a visually striking aesthetic and price point of view they're very similar. Another speaker I'd be curious to compare this too would be the Paradigm Persona 9H.
Paul McGowan is *not* an engineer -- he's a self-educated hobbyist with decades of industry experience who's done some (long-ago IIRC) design work, but he has no formal technical training -- and he did not design the FR30, which is the work of Chis Brunhaver.
Not the only person did that actually. People in 80s 90s already can DIY can sells with simple theory and instruments. Not like today with CADs, you really need to study in college.
They don't turn the volume because they don't want to hear any distortion and most of the rooms don't have room treatment so you get a lot of bad reflections
Check out PS Audio channel where Paul and Chris B. ( the designer) actually personally deliver and set up 2 sets of these speakers to people's homes. In the first one the listening room is tiny. The people buying these speakers don't look like millionaires.
You should treat every room to compliment your speakers, especially when you are emphasizing tone, tone, tone. Your best producers, recording engineers, of songs, symphonies, and the like have always done such. With no treatment of the room, you would definitely have more complaints.
I think PS Audio might up their sales if they offer a wood veneer version. There're forgetting the baby boomers that grew up with that wood veneer. Plus, we have decades of earning money in the bank.
