Thank you for doing this interview with James Altucher. I am just learning about him, and I find him fascinating - an independent thinker, creative, intuitive, intelligent and humble. He's not afraid to question the "status quo", which in doing so can open our minds to greater innovation and positive change.
I was fortunate to meet James Altucher recently when he was over in London - really nice guy, very approachable and loves to chat - always asking questions 👍🏻👍🏻
Great piece! around 11:45 - Stocks are such a BS Industry. The Key is ownership! (See Hanaurer an Liu on employee-owned businesses) 16:00 why would you go to college? MOOC (not mentioned by name, but clearly mentioned) 18:20 Cornell Comp Sic undergrad and C-Mellon PhD and at his first job was smoked by the coders that and had to be sent to a remedial course in programming (sounds like Bell Labs). Wow. 23:50 maybe the best advice a parent can give a child regarding high school senior-year and college planning 30:30 - warning to ideologues 33:55 - the solutions are outpacing the problems ..... Hmm... Maybe if you are are a millionaire. Then again, if here is a lesson pr moral to draw from this interview is "you are your solution" or at least the beginning and a big part of it. 34: 30 create a blueprint, weed our corruption, NJ an NY are just fill of corruption.
After a week of thought, this interview strikes me as an elaborate argument for being a deadbeat dad. Families provide stability. The most important responsibility of a parent is to be there for their children. Moving every month is not conducive to a stable environment. Nick, out of fairness, you should interview this guys ex-wife. I'll bet she doesn't find him so amusing.
I agree with him on college. I went to a private college to avoid paying for the liberal arts and mandatory crap that standard institutions force on you, but even that was useless. I think a community college is ok, if it took revenue from other sources than property tax, or go to standard trade or business schools. Colleges are good for hard sciences, but the humanities create a lazy social class of self righteous narcissists. The best artists and composers are autodidacts or people who could have done just as well without college.
"Colleges are good for hard sciences, but the humanities create a lazy social class of self righteous narcissists." I love sweeping generalizations as much as the next guy, but would you care to explain how the humanities are at fault for this? Laziness, self-righteousness, and narcissism can and do occur with or without education. Just look at Donald Trump. As an instructor in the humanities with a deep appreciation for all branches of knowledge, I'm inclined to believe that the humanities are just as important as the sciences, and believe the humanities have a tendency to reduce the ego rather than inflate it
Humanities are DEFINITELY important. I think James simply argues that the same/similar education in this area can be better accomplished without college, at a fraction of the cost. This would actually HELP the advances of human understanding, rather then saddle graduates with debt that they will never recover from - which creates a cynicism about the humanities that is actually destructive.
+thom taylor, I agree that college tuition is a crime. It's really a shame that people are foregoing a liberal education because of money, but that's unfortunately what the world runs on. I'm one of the debt-saddled former students you speak of, so I definitely sympathize. I just think the cynicism should be directed at the system, not at the disciplines.
I just hate how biased the colleges are. It would be a lot easier to get behind free college for the college kiddies if they weren't radicalizing and threatening my constitutional rights.
I found this guy on Quora like a year ago and started getting emails from his blog. So his free writings made him famous! So famous I watched this video!
Great job, Nick! I've followed Altucher for several years now & find his podcasts the most inspirational and insightful available. James steps on his clients sometimes, because he gets so excited - but his interview talent has improved plenty since I first started hearing his podcasts (he might have had the last one with Wayne Dyer - and his Peter Thiel one is especially helpful to anybody focused on the new economy). Altucher wanted to interview Gary Johnson ("big supporter!" James told me) when I was volunteering on the campaign - but somehow the media team there kept dropping the ball & we never lined it up. Still, I have let the Kibbes & Nick Sarwark know that once Gary decides to re-emerge (which he'll have to do at some point) that Altucher would be the perfect media outlet for him (and James, if you are listening here, please contact me about the 2018 convention in New Orleans - I'm involved in the organization & you'd be an ideal participant!)... TT
Acro!?? "James is a great thinker"??? Are you drunk right now, or did you misspell "stinker"? This guy is a filthy deuschbag! If I ever see him on the street, he's getting a beating for ripping off poor, hard working family men and women who believe his BULLSHIT! When's the last time you paid $49 for something FREE???
James seem to have acquired some good wisdom over the years but is also out of touched with reality. He's vouching for one own's freedom but has a narrow perspective on to get there. He doesn't seem to realize that not everyone is an entrepreneur like him nor are they free-spirited.
The hairstyle is part of his cultivated persona, or so he believes. A lot of homeless street people use the same hairstyle to cultivate a similar persona.
Haha I laugh about 5 xs an hour. I laughed when they talked about how much people laugh; however I often see $147.00 in my bank account and I have a mortgage but so far so good.
As much as Altucher may be right, I don't think living in 12 different AirBNB's a year with tiny carry-along bag is making him too happy. Need a balance.
Life isn't meant to be a happy experience. Living arrangements are always precarious, whether we like to think they are or not. If you rent, you never know if you may be kicked out for some reason or the company will go out of business. If you "own," you are utterly dependent on the stability of your employment. Employment is almost never that stable. "Here today, gone tomorrow," as they say.
Everything the interviewer mentioned about going to college for can be done on your own time and automated at your own pace. dude got cucked by Altucher.
What the fuck are you even replying to from my post? What are you getting at? You seem to be having a very massive misunderstanding of the point of my post.
I like this guy. Telling it like it is. Take his story learn from it. Actually refreshing listening to him, then you listen to Grant Cardone and realize who the fakes are
How a person who is not a millionaire can identify with this guy? When you really loose everything literally, your business, your car, or even your house, and with almost no money left you really can talk to the majority of the people who is looking for advice on how to get back on track. I got hooked with the description and started watching...total dissapoinment.
"I think i'll spend my money better then the government" I think we should pool our money together for cool stuff like roads, space programs, sewage systems....
Interviewer is so annoying, constantly interrupting, talking too much. Hey buddy, take a page from Larry king’s handbook: stop making interview about yourself and instead make it about your subject. Let them talk! It makes for a much more enjoyable interview.
Down to $143. Shoot. I once spent my last $1.50 on 3 hot dogs (piled HIGH with all trimmings) at the AM-PM. I probably wouldn't kill myself over loosing a bunch of money but I'd definitely off myself if I had hair like that.
@It's Matt, Question: Have you ever had as much money or even half of what James had made and blew?!? Do you have, or ever had, a family that depends on you to support them, finacially? Many people during the depression and recessions became depressed, then, committed suicide when they lost their life's savings and their homes. It may be easy to make a statement such as yours if you didn't have much to lose in the first place. 🙌🙌🙌😺
The difference between a fundamental Christian and a fundamental Muslim. A christian thinks he goes to hell for committing murder, a Muslim thinks he is going to heaven.
I hope you are joking because didn't Einstein have crazy hair like that? Few people trusted him at the time too. There's a reason Altucher is termed as Futurist.
Jayanth Avasarala difference is, Einstein was a pioneer. This chump is riding the "ooh scientist with crazy hair" wave. Looks like and idiot, says idiotic things, chances are he is a fucking idiot.
This man keeps contradicting himself! He attended college and then took a job in the field. AND then made millions from work he did within the field. Now he's preaching no college. I agree that some degrees are useless but I am strongly pro-college, especially if you can attend for free! And he's against homes but that is due to his own bad choices. He had $50M in cash but couldn't pay for a home in cash so that he wouldn't lose it when times got tough? People listening to this message should critically examine it before taking it as gospel!
@billiebillie, For one thing, it would be great to read comments based on what people 'actually' said__James is not "against" college altogether, he's against racking up a 30+ year DEBT for an education you can get without the debt! Where, btw, can you attend college "for free", not counting scholorships which are not available to everyone?! As regards his stance on buying a home__what he is actually referring to is, many people have been "conditioned" to believe buying a home is an "investment", which it, most certainly, is not! All he's trying to do is give people the numbers, based on his own mistakes, so they can better calculate what they want for themselves, hence, his book, "Choose Yourself", what's so horrible about that?! 🙌🙌🙌😺

Now that is one amazing human being.
Shout out !!! James you’re the best !!!!
Great interview. Thank you Nick. James raises some great points. Home ownership is a lot of work and college is over-priced.
JasonFiske Yes! great stuff, I'm gonna sell all my possessions and uber my family down the street to the air b&b stat.
Of coarse, James is divorced for a reason.

The best courses were the ones I took after college to get licensed in real estate. I took them at community college. 100% useful stuff.
After learning about his book in this video, I ordered it. I really like the way this man thinks about life.
Do it, James! Run for governor of New York!!!
I totally feel the way he does! So glad I found this!
Wow, this is the most inspirational interview. So glad I saw this today!

I wish my parents gave me that kind of opportunity. College isn't the right choice for a lot of people.
30:17 most important point in the interview
Why the non-stop condescension from the interviewer? James - you're a huge inspiration - big ups!
This is the kind of guy that people think libertarians look like
KTHEMASTER 😂😂😂
Jeffrey Tucker, so dapper :)
I love this guy👍🏻
The interviewer was kind-of dry with his not-so-polite questions, could have asked them in a different form. James is amazing.

Well he's certainly got some front. Failed at 17 business ventures, has a broken marriage, and still thinks he can offer advice to others.
Those guaranteed to not fail are those that have never tried. How many businesses have you started?
One, and it's never failed.
How many mega successful people have you had on your podcast?
How much is your business worth and what is it called?
Have you written any books about your success and tried to help anyone else out with becoming successful?
