I just got my 200-800 for my R5, R7, and R8 and I couldn't be happier so far. I had the RF 800 f/11 and sold that to get this one. My question is would I be further ahead buying a used ef 500mm prime that I can buy in good condition for just a few 100 dollars more. I currently have the RF 100-400mm which is pretty good for what it’s meant for. Big investment, so I know it’s good to ask people with far more knowledge than me. Thank you in advance.
I know that’s not an easy question. But I just want to avoid spending and spending. If you were at this point to pick 1 lens, I was just hoping for your thoughts. You have used them all. The original ef 500mm which is over8 pounds. And the new zooms that have come in the last few years. They can all be bought at a similar price.
Let me reply to both here!!! A prime like the 500 or the 600... fantastic lenses, fantastic clarity but limiting. It works awesome on both the R5 and R7 with the R7 having the added reach of the crop. You do lose some of the zoom though. The 100-400 you have is a good lens but for me did not have enough reach and for what it is, for me was too slow. I prefer the original 100-400 EF one that I have as it is faster. Not as many sharp shots but it worked for me. There really is no perfect set up - they all have advantages and disadvantages. I usually just pick one and stick with that instead of taking more that one - switching I find to be inconvenient. And then too, dont forget about the processing of the images - that can make a difference as well. The JPEGs out of camera are really awesome but you can get more with the processing of the raw files. Go out and just have fun - that is the most important thing - enjoy being out. No set up is perfect for everything. And the other thing is that your style may be different than mine so what works for me, may not work for you in the same way. Fabulous shots and R5 commentary. Just for chuckles, have your tried it with an R6MII if you have one? They say it autofocuses better and at high ISO (dark). Thanks, again.
Thanks John for this definitive comparison, between R7 and R5. I will go with R7 + Rf 100-500 and use Extender 1.4x if I really need it. I will now rent both and compare for the last time.
That is an awesome set up for sure. I just really like buying and trying new gear. I am going to really try it in depth on the R7 being more mindful of the ISO to see what results I can get. 🙏🤗💖

I am told that someone ordering today might be a year out from getting it. I saw an article that B&H, one of the biggest retailers, only got eight of these in during the month of December, and they have backorders of nearly 1,000. Multiply that by all the retailers in the world! I wonder how many Canon can even make in a month?

Hello!!!! Well, the advantage you will have with this lens is the zoom. I really LOVE the zoom with is something I rarely use. I tend to keep my lenses at full extension - 100-500 is always out at 500, or 100-400 - always out at 400. I have really enjoyed the zoom. Every lens is personal based on what and we all shoot. This is not a lens for everyone due to the length (I find it a little unbalanced at the long end), and some will find it heavy - I do not. It is a lens that hunts a bit for focus sometimes and for that, I wish it had a focus limiter. I also think the lens would be more useful to those of us that use a manual focus ring for subject burred in a brush. For that, I wish the focus ring and programable button had been switched as far as position. It is a good lens that needs light to work at its best. Then, it takes some amazing photos. The F9 at 800mm as you know, compressed the background just fine - not as well as F4, but I usually have my 1.4 extender on the 600 F4 and even still, I get way more light. But...... I don't have the zoom... and it is heavy..... and has a longer minimum focus distance.. Will a lens like this work for your style of shooting? Everything has limitations and advantages. 🙏💖🤗
Outstanding video! It will be interesting to get your feedback on the 200-800 after the Washington trip! Still struggling if I want to trade the 100-500 for it.
Thank you!! It is a great lens but it does need a lot of light. I could not shoot it much in the brief time I was in Washington - the dark skies did not provide enough light for the AF to work the way I wanted it to work. I came back early because of the weather but will try again in a couple of weeks. I will fly though. 🙏🤗💖

I can totally imagine you preferring the R5, 1) because it's just a great camera, but 2) because of the varied nature of your photography. For me, I choose a lesser camera in nearly every respect.... Except one, reach 🙂 ....the R7. You got some great stuff with it on this trip 🙂👍 Interesting (a little concerning actually) that you don't feel like it does as well on the R7 ? I still have it on order for rent... So I could pass if it doesn't do as well as my 800 F11. Will see.
yep i also cant wait for proper 800 F11 vs 200-800 comparisons on R7 especially for the sake of sharpness and overall IQ My feeling is…. despite being a slow F11 and using Diffractive Optics (not good for image quality as much marketing hypes this nonsense) the 800 F11 will still have some sort of „prime look“, while the 200-800 can lose a bit depth and 3d pop as its typical for zoom lenses In various conditions also my Sigma 150-600 is easily spotted as the zoom lens with missing depth in the image
@@harrison00xXx this is why I’m still waiting on the rental. Kind of torn though, about canceling the rental, and just going on an order it… But John has made me pause. If I wasn’t already killing it with the 800 F11, it would be a no brainer. But as it is, it’s going to have to do really great for me…. $2K great 🙂
@@Chris_Wolfgram I will tell you that the zoom and the shorter minimum focus distance give it the advantage over the F11!!! Plus you can focus across the entire screen unlike the F11 only in that little box. If you do buy it from some one that takes returns, no risk. Also, I think you could sell it and not lose money. You may really love it with its advantages over the F11! 🤗💖
@@harrison00xXx I will say that there is not much difference between the two lenses at 800mm - you could not tell between F11 or F9. Both need a lot of light, but the 200-800 has more versatility with the zoom and focuses across the entire plain. Plus, it has a shorter MFD. From my experience adapting the Sigma 150-600, both of the RF lenses will outperform the adapted Sigma. I am hoping that Sigma does make announcements soon with native RF long glass - I am really looking forward to that. Those will probably out perform these 200-800 and 800 F11!! 🤗💖
@@harrison00xXx In one of my videos, I did show images from both lenses shot at the same place, same day, same times, and copied the development settings in light room between the photos. I could not tell the difference. This new lens has the advantage of the zoom, the shorter MFD, and you can use the full frame to get your shot where you want it. It is a little bigger than the F11 though. Both are great lenses that need light!! 🙏🤗💖
Interesting. If I keep the ISO low with this lens on the R7, I am happy with the images - sharp and clear. This lens is where I see some of the same things on both bodies as far as focus. The R5 just handles the high ISO better because of the size of the sensor. Just a limitation I have to work around. 🙏💖🤗
Believe it or not, still debating. It is a lens that need a LOT of light. Not good under cloudy skies or early mornings. I have a couple more days to decide!! I was out shooting it this morning and will for the next couple of days - this time on the R7. I could not shoot it in Washington - too gloomy and dark. 🙏💖🤗
The F11 is an awesome underrated lens. Both have limitations, both need light. This one has the advantage of a shorter MFD and the zoom. Win win with either of them! 🙏🤗💖
Я предпочитаю этот объектив на полном кадре, как R5 и R3. Я бы тоже хотел попробовать на R8 для сравнения. Фантастический объектив, но мне кажется, что он лучше всего подходит для полного кадра!!!! 🙏🤗💖

Believe it or not - still on the fence. Was trying to shoot in under cloudy stormy skies and the focus was not playing nice with the low light. It is a lens that really needs direct sun to be at its best. Was shooting at the beach today in brighter light and will get to looking at those shortly. It is a good lens with limitations. 🙏💖🤗
I have not. I do not own one. I like a LARGE sensor which is why I like the R5 and the R7. The sensor on that and the R3 for me, are just too small and not what I want. If the R1 when it comes out is not a 45 megapixel camera, I wont get that either. I want as much data as I can get. 🙏💖🤗
Top Drawer .... An R3 user posted a video saying the Lense and Camera ..fell apart . I've seen a few videos by other users with the R7 I have distinct feeling that Canon hasn't fully admitted that the 200-800 Is only compatible with FFC .. Hence the issues with the R7 being a crop sensor camera
I saw that persons video so I checked mine - it is fine. And as far as shooting it on the R7, it works great - in bright sunlight, but that is also the same for the 800 F11. For that reason, I really only use that on the R5 and I do prefer this on the R5 as well. However, if you can keep your shutter speed down a little and the ISO lower, it produces some great images. NO set up is perfect - we just have to work around the limitations. 🙏💖🤗
I understand. I hit buy now as soon as it went up for sale online and just got lucky. Hopefully Sigma will announce something sometime soon as well that will also give us more options. 🙏🤗💖
LOL - I am back on the other side of the fence again. It is not a low light lens and for the brief time I was in Washington, I shot it for about 20 minutes. It was just too dark and gloomy for it. I have a couple more days to decide. 🙏💖🤗
R5 mark II or the next generation of this lens? Everything has advantages and limitations - they are just tools. If what you are currently shooting is working perfectly for you and makes you happy - keep shooting it until something comes out that knocks your sock off and is something you just have to have!!! 🙏💖🤗
Hello - I think you asked this on another of my videos as I am just getting back to answering comments. It is a good lens that need light to be at its best. I think Sigma is supposed to announce some RF lenses soon - that will be something to check out as well. 🙏💖🤗

Fabulous shots and R5 commentary. Just for chuckles, have your tried it with an R6MII if you have one? They say it autofocuses better and at high ISO (dark). Thanks, again.
Thank you!! I have not tried it on anything other than the R5 or R7 as that is all I have!! 🙏🤗💖
Already saving for this lens. Will be pairing it with the R10. We'll see how that goes. 😂 Wonderful video!
Thank you!! It really is an awesome lens!! Have fun with it when you get it. 🙏🤗💖
@@JonnyPink65 I will be waiting for your session.🙏
@@vimalneha Unfortunately, I came back early due to the weather since I was driving. Gonna watch the weather and fly back for a day or two of shooting as soon as it gets a little better. 🤗💖
Do you think this lens would work on my R6 Mk2? Thanks!
I am sure it would work perfectly!! I prefer this lens on a full frame over the R7 since the full frame cameras in my opinion and experience handle the higher ISO that you get with this lens! 🙏💖🤗
Nice video John, I use skateboarding knee protectors when I go birding which means you can kneel on anything and be comfortable and in cold weather they keep your knees warm
Cheers
Noel from New Zealand
Thank you!!! I have those in my can and use them for macro. LOL. It does not hurt to get down in the sand unless you kneel on a rock - it is the getting back UP and I make those same sounds with the knee pads on LOL. I never think of putting them on even though they are always with me!! 🙏🤗💖
Did you change your mind? Like the pictures very much!
Thank you, thank you!!! Still on the fence - it is a lens that needs light. The focus does not play nice under cloudy and dark sksies It does have limitations and I am debating if the amazing zoom makes up for it only being a bright light lens. 🙏💖🤗
Amazing video jonny keep up the great work
Thank you, thank you!!!! 🙏💖🤗
The quality is amazing...
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I like it best on full frame bodies. I know many use it on the R7, but I prefer it on the full frame. 🙏🤗💖
The greatest dilemma I have in this year is which one to take 100-500 or 200-800 more reviews I see more confused I get 😂😂😂@@JonnyPink65

Thank you - I actually search until something speaks to me that fits the mood. And if I just cant find it, I record it for that part. LOL I have done that many times. So thank you thank you!!! 🙏💖🤗
@@JonnyPink65 John we share many loves, photography, music and 2 wheels. I was a fill in studio drummer and came very close to replacing the banger in Twisted Sister. I play a little guitar today and write some stuff when the mood suits. Your a good man Charlie Brown ✌✌
@@longrider9551 Thank you, thank you!! Photography took over for me as much musical outlet a long time ago. I still have my keys next to me at all times and a bazillion minus one guitars around me. I pick up, I play and go back to photography. Best of all worlds 🤗
Looks like this 200-800 it’s as sharp as the 100-500L with better reach without some limitations of the 100-500
All these new lenses on these mirrorless bodes are pretty awesome - we are fortunate for what we have access too. At the long end, it does need more light though. 🙏🤗💖
I’m glad i didn’t buy the 100-500 with the tel converter it would cost a fortune for the reach! I’ll keep my 100-400 II and add the 200-800
R6 ISO it’s amazing anyway for a hobby it’s more than enough
@@rodysk8 Probably the better cost move!!! I am a gear whore and love spending money I dont have LOL. 🤗
@@rodysk8 I understand it is an amazing camera. I went back and forth between the R5 and R6.... and almost just bought both. I went R5 because of the larger sensor - that was the only reason. 🤗
I am told that someone ordering today might be a year out from getting it. I saw an article that B&H, one of the biggest retailers, only got eight of these in during the month of December, and they have backorders of nearly 1,000. Multiply that by all the retailers in the world! I wonder how many Canon can even make in a month?
WOW - I did not know that. I was watching B&H and refreshing. As soon as it went up for sale, I hit buy now. I guess I am fortunate. Thank you for the info! 🙏🤗💖
Great images, ty for sharing.
Thank you thank you and for letting me share. 🙏💖🤗
Awesome sharpness on this lens.
Overall, it is an awesome lens and i LOVE the zoom. It is not a low light lens though by any means. Versatile and I have had fun shooting it!! 🙏💖🤗
Thanks John. Have a safe trip. Enjoy!
Thank you. I got scared of the incoming storms and came back early. I am glad I did. Will shoot here at home for a while and look at flying up again for a weekend within the next couple of weeks when the weather is better. My little FWD car and regular tires where not having fun in that rain. Fine for here in Los Angeles but not out there. And even cutting it short, it was an AWESOME trip and adventure 🙏💖🤗
Jonny, I have R6 and RF 600 is a good investment for buying 200-800? I’m a zoo photographer. Greetings Wim
Just sold my 100-500 to order the 800 waiting on it now, hard to beat the reach
@@danielson_9211 and the zoom!!! 💖
Thank you!! It is a great lens but it does need a lot of light. I could not shoot it much in the brief time I was in Washington - the dark skies did not provide enough light for the AF to work the way I wanted it to work. I came back early because of the weather but will try again in a couple of weeks. I will fly though. 🙏🤗💖
Cool! Enjoy your trip too
Thank you. I got scared of the incoming storms and came back early LOL. Worst in 33 years according to the new reports that I was watching. And continuing to watch, I am glad I did. Will shoot here at home for a while and look at flying up again for weekend within the next couple of weeks when the weather is better. My little FWD car and regular tires where not having fun in that rain. Fine for here in Los Angeles but not out there. Looking at buying a Subaru now as well LOL. And even cutting it short, it was an AWESOME trip and adventure 🙏💖🤗
I can totally imagine you preferring the R5, 1) because it's just a great camera, but 2) because of the varied nature of your photography.
For me, I choose a lesser camera in nearly every respect.... Except one, reach 🙂 ....the R7.
You got some great stuff with it on this trip 🙂👍
Interesting (a little concerning actually) that you don't feel like it does as well on the R7 ?
I still have it on order for rent... So I could pass if it doesn't do as well as my 800 F11. Will see.
yep i also cant wait for proper 800 F11 vs 200-800 comparisons on R7 especially for the sake of sharpness and overall IQ
My feeling is…. despite being a slow F11 and using Diffractive Optics (not good for image quality as much marketing hypes this nonsense) the 800 F11 will still have some sort of „prime look“, while the 200-800 can lose a bit depth and 3d pop as its typical for zoom lenses
In various conditions also my Sigma 150-600 is easily spotted as the zoom lens with missing depth in the image
Pixel density on R7 sensor is on the limit of optic resolving power .
Interesting. If I keep the ISO low with this lens on the R7, I am happy with the images - sharp and clear. This lens is where I see some of the same things on both bodies as far as focus. The R5 just handles the high ISO better because of the size of the sensor. Just a limitation I have to work around. 🙏💖🤗
So you decided to keep it. Nice
nice to see the variable aperture also makes sense despite F9
At least with the RF 800 F11 it doenst need it, luckily
The F11 is an awesome underrated lens. Both have limitations, both need light. This one has the advantage of a shorter MFD and the zoom. Win win with either of them! 🙏🤗💖

so your keeping it then?
Believe it or not - still on the fence. Was trying to shoot in under cloudy stormy skies and the focus was not playing nice with the low light. It is a lens that really needs direct sun to be at its best. Was shooting at the beach today in brighter light and will get to looking at those shortly. It is a good lens with limitations. 🙏💖🤗
All new lenses are great nowdays, hard to make a bad lens.
Very true. Each has advantages and disadvantages and we just have to work around those to make the most out of these tools!!! 🙏🤗💖
Did you use the 200-800 on the R6II
I've seen a few videos by other users with the R7
I have distinct feeling that Canon hasn't fully admitted that the 200-800 Is only compatible with FFC .. Hence the issues with the R7 being a crop sensor camera
Made in China strikes again.
Ordered mine months ago. On a wait list, Canon only released a short supply.. very disappointed
I understand. I hit buy now as soon as it went up for sale online and just got lucky. Hopefully Sigma will announce something sometime soon as well that will also give us more options. 🙏🤗💖
@@JonnyPink65 I did the same but was too late
@@marylounorman4276 💖 Then I just got lucky. I saw others that got theirs before me. Eventually they will all go out.
It just took a little time to warm up to it lol. Awesome
LOL - I am back on the other side of the fence again. It is not a low light lens and for the brief time I was in Washington, I shot it for about 20 minutes. It was just too dark and gloomy for it. I have a couple more days to decide. 🙏💖🤗
I think I'll wait for the Mark 2 version...lol!

It has an amazing zoom and is much lighter than your 600 F4. It really all depends on your shooting style. I think Sigma is supposed to announce some RF lenses soon - that will be something to check out as well. 🙏💖🤗

@@Sywi I have really been wanting to try that. I have had it in my rental cart many times and will eventually play with it. Light, and an awesome focal length. Based on how much I like shooting the 800 F11,I am excited to one day shoot that too!! 🤗
