I LOVED this show! I was a kid (b. 1979) and it used to come on Nick. The song, the short little plots - the sheer fun and imagination in it made it one of my fave shows. (And Bernard Cribbins voice was stellar!) Thanks for posting! So many memories!!!
This really takes me back. How beautiful and innocent shows were for kids back then. His imagination and drawing ability were my salvation. Today, I am an artist and a writer. Thank you Simon for sharing my childhood with me and inspiring me to be what I am today.
OMG!! I really thought i'd never ever see this or hear this theme tune again, its bought back being 10 again in 77 in the spring when we had summers, love the song, always remembered it in my head and still sung from time to time, somethings just stay with you i guess UTUBE is the best thing ever on the internet
OMG! U r not the only one! I am from the USA and I would tell Brits about it and they looked at me like I had two heads. I remembered this from my childhood and LOVED it! I had some bad stuff happen today and just like with I was 5,6 and 7 in my 30's it still brought a smile to my face hearing all of the morals of each story. I think the world would be a much better place if it was ran the morals in these stories.
For five minutes I was 8 years old again, watching Pinwheel on Nickelodeon with my little sister without a care in the world aside from wondering what Simon's plan was to help out the lonely sun. Thank you. Thank you so much. ^.^
The Simon skit was in the 90's with Mike Myers. Didn't know it was Simon LaBon singing? Interesting. Thanks for sharing... loved this as a kid, and glad I found it again.
One of the most vivid memories I have of TV when I was a child was the song from this programme. None of my friends remembered it at all. I'm not crazy! Hurrah!
Oh, I'm with you there. I don't even talk to people about this show anymore. Because when I do, yes, they think I am crazy too. This is the first time I have seen it since the 70's. I have found it at last!
Captain Kangaroo had been on TV at least since the 1960s. I recall seeing the earlier shows when I was under 10 years of age but from what I best recall, when Captain Kangaroo started having this particular cartoon on the show, it was the 1970s maybe the late 1970s and I think this cartoon was more computer-generated unlike cartoons that were hand drawn before the late 1970s. In fact if I stretch my memory, I think at the time there was mention that a lot of cartoons were progressively being done by computers than by hand-drawings. I still liked watching Captain Kangaroo even when I was a teen. Simon in The Land Of Chalk Drawings was a delightful cartoon
this was before my time but the reruns were my life. I tried remembering the name until i came across chalkzone & i got a link to this. How i missed you Simon
3:58 Can anyone please point me in the right direction to where I can find this song and the other melody songs in this cartoon they are beautiful and I've always loved them as a kid, I'm not speaking about the theme song I love it also but I'm looking for the other music that plays during the cartoon. Thanks!
favorite episode. Love the Moog(?) syth incidental music From Romper Room in the 80's in USA tv, even though a mid 70's cartoon in the uk. They'd switch between this and paddington bear shorts day to day or week
I have a ear and memory for songs, that blow my friends away... LOL. When I heard Mike Myers on SNL singing this, I said "hey, he changed the lyrics". I don't think a lot of people knew the origin/background of the skit though.
In 2001, CINAR (A CDN Animation Co.) briefly revived the series. Simon's friend, Henry, was replaced by Lily, and it was narrated by the late Ernie Coombs (aka Mr. Dressup).
This shows that UK animations were some of the best: and FilmFair produced a lot of those! Paddington, the Herbs, the Wombles, the Perishers, etc. Ivor Wood and Graham Clutterbuck are geniuses, and deserve knighthoods!
@chisacat I must've watched it in the very early 1980s, maybe around the time I was 4 or 5, probably in reruns. I vaguely remember it as part of channel 8's broadcasts, but it might've been another station. I rather liked Simon, because he had glasses like me. Of course when I tried drawing on the walls, I got in trouble. :p Simon had the sense to do it outside. :D
I remember these from...I think Captain Kangaroo used to run them in the US in the 70s when I was a kid. I had no idea that old Wilf (Bernard Cribbins) from Doctor Who was the narrator!
@oldmanjenkinz1 Thanks so much. :D For me it was after school - I'd kick off my sneakers, settle down on the carpeting (that's another memory in of itself) and watch Simon. I used to sometimes pretend I was Simon and take out my chalks and chalkboard. :D
just a follow up question, im just wondering but does anyone know where i can see the theme song from the new teletoon version of this show? That was from my time & i would really like to hear it. This one sadly doesn't ring too many bells. I dont quite remember this. Thanks!
Thank you SO much for putting this here. I sing this song all the time, and no one believes it was real...I loved Simon!
I remember this episode as if it were yesterday. Loved this show. Watched every weekday

Wow. What a memory jog. This was an awesome show!
I remember watching this every morning as a kid. I thought I'd never see this again!!! : )
strange, how 10 seconds of a theme i have not heard in prob 40 years can bring everything to a stand still!
OMG!! I really thought i'd never ever see this or hear this theme tune again, its bought back being 10 again in 77 in the spring when we had summers, love the song, always remembered it in my head and still sung from time to time, somethings just stay with you i guess

Sounds like Simon and Garfunkel

i can't believe i'm looking at these again. amazing! wow... and just as eerie and melonchole as i remember them.
Omg im a grown a......s man but i feel like shedding a tear, what an era this was so innocent and pure, most of all Simple
One of the most vivid memories I have of TV when I was a child was the song from this programme. None of my friends remembered it at all. I'm not crazy! Hurrah!
I have the theme song but really wish I had the soundtrack to this show with all those beautiful Melodies that play through out the Cartoon.
Oh, I'm with you there. I don't even talk to people about this show anymore. Because when I do, yes, they think I am crazy too. This is the first time I have seen it since the 70's. I have found it at last!
Wow...it's been over 20 years since Ive seen this! Talk about memories!!!
wow so nice to see. I sing this song all of the time but haven't seen this in 40? years.

Animations are simple but pleasant and moral imagination has touched beautifully.
Exactly! Like Simon, I lived in my fantasy world. And like Simon, my world "over the fence" tided me over until my bad times had passed
this was before my time but the reruns were my life. I tried remembering the name until i came across chalkzone & i got a link to this. How i missed you Simon
I loved this when I was little:-) I use to sing along with the theme song everyday.
Such memories. I would watch this before school.
this is an example of the greatness of children's programming that today's tv shows fail to achieve.
Ahhh! This was one of my favorite cartoons to watch!
I used to watch this show one of my all time favorites
Such lovely chalk drawerings...
I just love the intro song.

HOLY DUDE! I remember this! For years I tried to tell my friends about it, but nobody believed me. DUDE!
Thank you, Pinwheel and Calliope, for introducing the American audience to this cartoon!
I have a ear and memory for songs, that blow my friends away... LOL. When I heard Mike Myers on SNL singing this, I said "hey, he changed the lyrics". I don't think a lot of people knew the origin/background of the skit though.

I adored this series. My own son is named Simon now (no, not because of this cartoon's influence) and he enjoyed watching this.
I remember watching this on Pinwheel back when Nickelodeon actually had decent shows.
.....Dont worry sun, these noughts I captured on the moon will stop you being lonely! ..........well, naturally
I loved Simon as a kid! Wonder how many of us American kids wondered why the narrator kept calling zeroes "naughts"? :)
This is a great show
I wished there was a soundtrack from this show the song that starts at 2:05 - 2:23 is beautiful :)
@chisacat I must've watched it in the very early 1980s, maybe around the time I was 4 or 5, probably in reruns. Amen brother. I remember my mom correcting me from calling my pants trousers and the yard a garden. LOL
Filmfair often produced some good shows.
I remember these from...I think Captain Kangaroo used to run them in the US in the 70s when I was a kid. I had no idea that old Wilf (Bernard Cribbins) from Doctor Who was the narrator!
no one will ever find the soundtrack used to this cartoon no on...ive looked forever this music needs to be found like at 2:02 i heart this song.
Ah ha ! finally a good explaination of mass bird death!!
@oldmanjenkinz1 Thanks so much. :D For me it was after school - I'd kick off my sneakers, settle down on the carpeting (that's another memory in of itself) and watch Simon. I used to sometimes pretend I was Simon and take out my chalks and chalkboard. :D
Dammit i just wanted to hear the song ...it made me watch the whole thing ..now wheres my juice box lol
@chisacat Early memories for me, too. Remember eating oxtail soup while watching this when I came home from school for lunch.
I wonder if Simon got robbed in the land of the chalk drawings. That would be a pimp episode.
