Tire Sizes for First Gen Nissan Xterras

  • Too Long...Didn't Watch: Stock 2000-2004 Nissan Xterras can fit a 32" tire with some minor plastic trimming. Throw on a 2" body lift if you want to bump to 33" tires. This assumes stock backspacing on the rims...and you may have to adjust steering stops to prevent rubbing front frame rails when tires are turned full lock to either side.
    Wider stance rims will increase interference in the front wheel well, and will require more trimming, possibly getting into sheet metal.
    32s: 32 x 11.50 R15 and 265/75 R16 are most common
    Skinny 33s: 33 x 10.50 R15 or 285/75 R16 are most common
    Fat 33s: 33 x 12.50 R15 or 305/70 R16 are most common

    I'm glad you touched on the number one misconception in off-roading, that suspension lift makes larger tires fit functionally.

    Rob do you know if a 2004 with 2"BL + 3" SL (Shackles, AAL, UCA), stock 17" rims (supercharged), 1.5" wheel spacers, could accomodate 285/75 r17 (equivalent to 33.8x11.2 r17)? I can´t seem to find an answer before going to those. I´m currently running 265/70 r17 (31.6x10.4 r17)

    • @XterraRob

      I would stick with 285 70 17. The wheel spacers will make them rub more on the rear fenders during turning . Anything fits with an angle grinder though...

    Going back and rewatching this because I think I'm finally ready to pull the trigger. I'm thinking I want to get a new set of steelies and tires. I have a PML and a 2-inch body lift but I do a lot of off-roading and air down pretty significantly I would love to fit the 33 inch but I'm afraid I'll end up with a lot of rubbing if you were to do it all over again with that lift and knowing you're doing a lot of off-roading what would be your ideal tire? I have 31s right now so a 32 would be an upgrade but a 33 would significantly increase the amount of trails I could go on.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  2 года назад +1

      I would go with a 32x11.50 R15 or 265/75R16 unless you have some kind of heavy duty reinforced steering system. Holding alignments is tough on bigger tires when you lift the front suspension at all. If you do go 33...get a skinny 33. 33x10.50 R15 or 285/75R16. I rub my 33x12.50 R 15s when off roading all the time and I have the most bolt on suspension lift plus 2 inch body lift. I think 32x11.50 R15 in an aggressive tread pattern would work great.

    • @stich1960
      @stich1960 2 года назад +1

      @@XterraRob thinks for the reply that makes sense, I would much rather have a more reliable rig than the extra lift so I will go with the 32 to be safe, I appreciate the help.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  2 года назад +1

      You can do a lot of hard trails with 32s. If you value the reliability, 32s are the way to go. You can still get an ggressive all terrain tire and it will still look and perform awesome. Tread pattern matters more than the extra inch of tire size.

    • @stich1960
      @stich1960 2 года назад

      @@XterraRob yeah I think that's the way to go. I live in an area that's really Rocky so extra height it's absolutely awesome. I would totally take reliability over extra height though.

    Good info. Any idea what load range you were running with your 265/75/16? I have to run ~23psi on all four tires for all the tread to make contact and that's not really a good thing. Trying to figure out if bumping up the load range will help get me back into the 30+ psi range.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 года назад

      My 265/75R16 were cooper discoverer ATP from discount tire direct. They were a SL 116T tires (which absolutely made the change up to load range C BFG KM2s a bigger change in performance). What tires do you have and are they on stock 16 in rims?

    • @remzguy7530
      @remzguy7530 4 года назад +1

      @@XterraRob They are on 16" Hummer wheels. The Falken Wild Peak or High Peak or something. I've only had the X for about a year and the previous owner put them on. I'll be changing them soon and am trying to figure out my PSI issue first. They are also 116T.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 года назад +1

      Based on Google, hummer rims are 16 x 7.5 wide. Xterra rims are 16 x 7 wide...which should be effectively the same for tire fitment purposes. Usually that situation happens when you are running a very wide tire on a very narrow rim...which isn't really the case here. Is it the falken wild peak at3w? Falkens website has rim widths of 7-9 inches as approved. 23 is too low for my comfort of daily driving and highway speeds. Id bump it up to 30 ss a starting point and see how rounded the tread pattern looks. Only other thing is if the tire by design aren't supposed to have all tread laying flat for dynamic reasons. Maybe gives you tread to flex onto or roll over onto when cornering or the tread flattens out more when tire rotation gets up to speed.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 года назад +1

      One more note: now is a good time to experiment with higher PSI and directly observe how it influences tire wear (since you plan to replace soon anyway). No need to experiment on brand new tires and start an oddball wear pattern right out of the gate.

    I have 265/75/16 with an aftermarket slight offset rim that rubs like crazy!!! I took all of the trim off plus turned torsion bars about 8x which gave me @ 3/4" of lift. Still rub! I believe a 2" body lift is definitely the way to go, but I hear that is a pain because your bumpers and your stick shifts will be completely different!

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 года назад

      What rims did you use? Got a link to them? Wider offset rims will definitely rub more on the front. You may have to cut the back of the fender or the rear of the front bumper to steer cleanly. Or 2 inch body lift.

    Thanks again Rob, I always like re-watching your videos. I ended up installing a 3" suspension lift(with UCA's and AAL-no shackle change and Bilstien shocks). Next step is tires. Should I go for aggressive 32's or do a BL and get 33's? Please suggest.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 года назад +2

      Depends how biased you want your truck to be away from street driving. If its a daily driver that sees trails occasionally, aggressive all terrain 32s would be my choice. If you off road a lot and your goal is to get the 100% most offroad capability as possible, 33s. I've actually done harder trails when I had 32s vs what I do now with 33s just due to who I typically wheel with now...so I can confidently say 32s won't really hold a typical person back on trails too much.

      It depends what your definition of "fit" is and how much you like your angle grinder. It may ride OK on a street but it will pinch up on fenders if the suspension flexes AKA off roading or going over a speed bump or pot hole. Also depends on how much you are willing to cut. Willing to cut the top arch of the fender? Sure that adds clearance. You using stock rims?

      You may be able to fit it at ride height, but you will rub stuff if the front tire flexes or hits bumps. People that have fit 33s with no lift don't take their truck off road (which is fine if thats what you want). You will still likely have to trim some plastic no matter what though. Also depends what tire. My BFG 33 x 10.5 is a 32.8 tire. A milder all terrain (Cooper) measures out at 32.4. Only way to know for sure is to try it.

I'd like to upgrade to a 17" or larger wheel as there are FAR MORE tire options for that size of wheel. I appreciate any input...
    Wheel size is 16X7.0

      255/65R16 is 10 inches wide. 265 75 R16 is 10.5ish inches wide. 285 70 R16 is 11.25 inches wide. Keep in mind if a tire is 1 full inch wider, that is a half inch further inboard and a half inch further outboard. 285 70 R16 is similar to 32 inch diameter and 11.5 width tire. I think it should fit, but ive never tried them. Any lift, or no?

    For the pml do you have any recs for wheels with negative backspacing?

      Stock back spacing (5.5") is generally best for tire fitment. if you want to go wider with minimal fitment issues to resolve, just go as small as you are willing to go. 4.5" back spacing seems to be popular which is equivalent of a 1" wheel spacer.

      Any fitment issues can be solved with an angle grinder and a cut off wheel :) just depends how aggressive you want to go. :)

      Stock wheels are 15x7 or 16x7 with 5.5 inch back spacing.
