Actually, Russia does NOT have a 'huge' population. It is way down (9th) on the list of national populations, squeezed between Bangladesh and Mexico. Furthermore, Russia has a range of ethnic and religious groups all pulling in different directions and also has an ageing population and a very thin population distribution in many parts of the country, especially Siberia and the East. Frankly, the last thing Russia needs is a megalomaniac like Putin trying to run Russia like Stalin ran the Soviet Union. We also have our own production of thermal imager matrices, electron optical converters, satellite equipment, and our own latest generation lithographic machines. The Soviet Union was the leader of computing technology in the 60s, unique ternary computers were created, Soviet developments formed the basis of the pentium processor. It is always worth pointing out that technologies are not only microelectronics, Russia is the leader of nuclear energy, the production and development of unique alloys, jet engines, the production of ultrahigh-temperature superconductors, space technologies (Almost all of Elon Musk's developments are purchased developments of the USSR and Russia).

For economy, not invasion. Russia is dependent on China to circumvent sanctions. Russian tourists from Vladivostok regularly visit China. Military invasion would be pooping where it is eating.

Farage has said he 'admires' Putin. As has Alex Salmond. George Galloway said he 'trusts him more than Keir Starmer'. All of them have taken Russian money too. Julian Malins, a Reform UK candidate said 'He's a very popular Russian president - as such, he's a good Russian president'. Useful idiots, one and all. The 'Putin is a genius' line though came from the most useful idiot of all, Donald Trump. Not a UK politician, but a US one, so considerably more dangerous. Also on the payroll.

I was in HM forces during the Cold War and Gulf War. I was based in Berlin most of this time and we knew then that Soviet/Russian equipment was awful. Part of our Training was to study it and we where never impressed with any of it. Now when i see that Same equipment even if slightly upgraded being used today its shows what a joke of a military Russia operates. The Chinese use Russian variets and like in the Gulf war 91 the Iraqis used Chinese varients of Russian Armoured Vechles. A complete bag of bolts and spanners.

One word, technology, taiwan produces over 90% of the worlds most advanced micro chip, chips that are in everything when it comes to millitary technology, we just arent capable of producing them on the scale they are anytime soon, its an extremely d
Advanced process, and they are just way better at it right now, and they are l

Both countries pride themselves as they exercise their sovereignty outside from the understanding of the West whose psyche is aggression. Their trade and cultural exchange has increased and is based on mutual respect and for the interest and welfare of their people with or without sanctions from the US and the West. They do not compete as much as the US and its allies do. But they will not back out from an aggressive entity - economically or militarily.

In regards to your remarks that the Russian equipment doesn't work - is it actually because the technology is over-rated and doesn't work as well as advertised? Or is it more that the corrupt Russian system has stripped the equipment that was supposed to make it top tier? For example the electronics in tanks - sights, night vision, etc.
