  • A spider monkey is born at the zoo - but his overprotective mum might be putting him, and his baby family, in danger.
    Spider monkeys are New World monkeys belonging to the genus Ateles, part of the subfamily Atelinae, family Atelidae. Like other atelines, they are found in tropical forests of Central and South America, from southern Mexico to Brazil.
    From The Secret Life of the Zoo: This series gives viewers behind the scenes access to Chester Zoo's 21,000 animals and the people who work there. The zoo's keepers are interviewed in each episode about the various animals and incidents, whether it's orangutans escaping their enclosure or tigers getting into scraps.

    I found a baby spider monkey in a Mexican jungle, once. She was just crying and crawling on the jungle floor. Once I picked her up, it was hard to get her off because their tails are literally like a 5th arm. I wanted to bring her home with me but instead, I gave her to the manager of the property. When, I called to check on her a couple of months later, they said that they eventually found her mom but she had been killed by a puma so the property managers adopted her.

    Poor Willow. Chrissy didn't seem too upset by it. I follow Rhesus macaques and some monkeys do lash out a little at babies that aren't their's if they get too close. Usually a little shove or hair pull. They do also allow babies to play together though. I hope she can relax and let Laura explore and play with Willow.

    • @puertoricanlady2023
      @puertoricanlady2023 2 года назад +1

      Monkeys world is about hierarchy. Rhesus Macaques as well most Monkeys Species have rules in their troops (groups) The high rank monkeys always have the priority in everything, food, space, etc.
      When a high rank monkey mom see a low rank monkey baby interacting with her baby, she can get a little bit aggressive with that baby, because the rules were set who play with who. They won't killed the baby but they were sending a warning to her mom to not let that happen again.
      We don't know what ranking are these moms. Although she is first time mom, usually they are overprotective, but none low ranking monkey would not come after a high ranking monkey baby. This suggest to me Chrissy is a low ranking monkey. The way she responded to Darla's attack to her baby, is the way that low ranking monkeys respond to higher hierarchy monkeys. Low ranking monkey always tried to calm the situation & even apologize to them.

    Protective moms are ok. They may seem "overly", but they are not. Good moms are in tune with what they see their babies can do and let go as they mature. Maybe she is not alpha and do not want her baby to be hurt by the alpha, or be treated by the troop as less than the alpha baby. Who knows what the monky moms feels. Even though these beautiful monkeys are in captivity..I know the humans mean no harm at the same time I feel like no matter how much humans may take the time to “study” and get to know how these monkeys are inside and out deep down inside i honestly feel humans will never fully completely understand everything about them especially as far as the new mothers👀motherhood is something that comes naturally it’s internal like just because the new mom may be acting in an unfamiliar way to a “human” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s that way to the monkey I’m sure instincts will kick in with the new mom (I’m not and have never been a supporter of zoos and I understand with some of thee endangered species of animals and all I still am not to fond of holding animals in captivity🥺it’s so heartbreaking🥺😩😢🙁)

    Sadly this us what often happens when a baby us rescued after losing their mother and humans, even professionals, think they are a substitute to raise a baby and that they will pick up on those primate "need to knows" once they are integrated back into a troop once they are very much older. Sadly, w know that primates do not learn infant care from watching other primates care for infants but learn from how they were treated. She is not prepared to allow Laura to come off here and explore as she never had a mother that allowed her to take those steps to independance, and having mom watching from a distance and ready to help when needed but knowing when to let her make and learn from mistakes. This us why we try very hard to put rescued primates back on to foster mothers with alternative ways to make nursing available if we do not have lactating mothers to share the milk or fully foster an orphan. It will not be as bad for Laura when she becomes a mother as accidentally some things will be done correctly but she will have issues to with raising infants. Sadly, when a primate loses a mother at birth or over that very important development period of the first year, if they cannot get it from care from another female they are always without that and instinct is not everything, some things, especially in social creatures are only developed through nurture. And when a primate mother is lost and a female offspring survives who is raised outside the/a troop that can echo down many generations and perhaps that line will not ever get it right.
