- Turning That Mess into a New Direction.
Welcome back to another BobBlast.
You know... there are some paintings I've worked on that just don't make the cut. Real losers! (I'm using my nice language here) Real turkeys! Sometimes things just don't work out. The universe constantly reminds me I'm a human being and everything I paint doesn't turn into gold!
So what to do with a stack of paintings that haven't worked out... yet? I pull out one from the stack of messes, place it on the table and begin again. Keeping true to the pre-named title, I glue on paper collage elements - then wash the entire surface with a transparent tone, such as Marigold, Phthalos or Fluorescent Opera pink - yes, that color! This usually jump starts and jolts me back into the purpose of the painting and its title. Since the original painting hasn't yet worked out, this time I do something dramatic on the painting - like making bold graphic marks or gluing strange collage papers.
Then I begin again... I continue to draw with any drawing materials, simply because I draw whenever I can! For me, my work has to be a clear message. It has to match the title and be clearly understood. It's more of a fun focus painting with a theme and a series along with that theme.
So when one of yours ends up a mess... it could be the beginning of your next best painting series.
Who knew! Who Knows!
Just when I was thinking "he needs to stop adding paint or stop painting on the paper", it got better and better. I loved the end result!!!
I just adore your energy, attitude, and art! Love, love. Thanks Bob : ).
I love your spontaneity and willing to just let go. I am still working on loosening up. This was a joy to watch as all your videos are Bob!
Loved the original and loved the re-do!!! Wow so creative!!
The fun is in the discovery! Thanks for helping me remember to be free and loose when I work. Thank you!
It was fun to see the Clown being born out of all your actions - like a journey of a events you inviter, discover and just melt together like an art magician
I so LOVE the sheer joy that do everything with. You make things so accessible.
You’re a blast bob. Love your spontaneity : )))
Had to laugh when he said, "That ought to scare the kids!"
I love your comment about changing ones mind. I like the painting very much. You seem to have so much fun when you are creating and so uninhibited. I have to try and adopt that way of painting.
Acrylic
A true creator ! Very original and creative - I suspect hours of classical drwaing before u can do that - plus a great sense of composition and color :)
Wonderful! I've just started doing collage so recently did a painting not to keen o so borrowed some techniques from collage also. Thank you for sharing an excellent job
Totally needed this today. Just found you on here and I'm pretty thrilled.
Wow I love this! REminds me of some Lautrec show person, the twisted and animated form! Super!

Blessings and know you have supports always:)
So rude to "yuk" someone's art!!! Not to mention really immature...
So cool !
I love this!
I've just started experimenting with collage. I haven't gotten the hang of it yet but this helps! I also over think my work and often end up with pieces I don't like. Sometimes I put aside and work on months later to fix, basically painting over until it's nice. I like your idea better with just diving in. :) Love your work & love that you have so much fun!
Hi - thanks for your comments. Just keep experimenting! Dive in...
Brilliant!
Good advice, as usually...
Thank you!
Wonderful job
Lezione molto interessante grazie...saluti da Mantova (ITALY)
Youre so funny Bob. Great video thanks.
Awesome
Magic!
I particularly like your color wheel. Where can I purches the one you use? I LOVE your energy and your techniques. Thanks foe sharing your enthusiasm for painting!
This is real magic.
You are SO clever and SO talented, WOW! You make it look so easy because you're so good at it, I can't DO this, really wish I could. Sadly I've lost my looseness (did better last year) = too much stress for too long (housing, healthcare, burglaries, pain, forms to fill in for EVERYTHING including for my disability and for ME to try prove everything).
I need my art: it's my therapy but I seem to have lost it, lost my way, lost heart, too much is bad/unfinished. Can't store/find my materials (and all my things)and they're getting lost and wrecked because need help with storage/arranging,need permanent and SAFE SECURE home and help to make it suit me and my disability (brain injury+) and injuries e.g. bending neck/back hurts. Too complicated and no help available (or can't access it), sadly.
Thank you for what you do, you're BRILLIANT! I think I need someone here who will help me re-find my spontaneity, maybe it's lost for ever and I must try do only what I CAN?
Jenny Hughes Stereotypical Artist, tortured soul.
Many health insurance plans pay for ART THERAPY. All of the Medicare plans that I have seen pay for it.
I think I need some of his art in my home!😏
Love this and all ur vids! If u haven't already, could you take a moment to talk about covering up/painting over most of the collage and stenciling? It looks nice and pretty and then u cover it up, to great success. how do I get past the covering the pretty?
You just slay me🙀
You are so amazing, I so wish I had at least a tenth of your talent and spontaneity. Do you give lessons?
Everybody should have "happy pants"!!
Absolutely!
im in love :)
Very cool!
This is making me want to get outa bed and paint...have two that are driving me NUTS!!!
I love your teaching style, and I hope to get to a workshop in Sedona sometime. Can you tell me whee I can get that square stencil that you are using in this video? I have looked everywhere for something like that and can't find it
stuck_in-the_suburbs - www.stencilgirl.com carries all kinds of amazing stencils including grid stencils. You might like theirs.
Love watching your videos and applying some of your techniques to my own work. Could you do a lesson on shading? I still have problems with that. Thanks, Michael
Yes! I can re-visit. Check previous Blasts for that as well.
Robert Burridge - BobBlast Thanks Robert, I will.
Yes. We will do that in a future BobBlast. Thank you.
Way fun❣️Thanks! We’re did you get the Square stencil❓
Pretty sure I got it at the hardware store! It is a drainer that goes in the bottom of a sink!
Where did u get the checker paper?
can you please put a list of the materials you use? What is the white thing you put on the canvas before you put the paper pieces ???
Hi Giselle - I always put down a coat of gesso before I start painting. Good idea about a materials list. Most of the time I just mention that products during the video.
Yea you have fans who are hard of hearing so the list and youtube subtitles helps alot
Then, glue went on before the torn paper
Leanda Miller, he used heavy gel medium as the glue. Two well-known brands are Golden and Liquitex; either will do. It dries clear, as he said.
Hi, Bob! I was wondering if I could do a modge podge collage over an old acrylic varnished painting? The entire canvas will be scrapbooking paper and bits and bobs o leftover materials. Can I modge podge directly over the canvas, without sanding?
Yes you can!
Hi Bob, I am not able to get sound on any of your videos. Yet others from other people are fine. I would LOVE to hear what you are saying.
🎉🎉💖🤗🤗🤗
Where do you buy the square stencils?
You know - I have had them for years. Could have been Jerry's or even Michael's.
I think I got those at a hardware store. Sink mat I think!
He needs to be my grandpa.
When did David Lynch start painting? Seriously though, great fkn work 👌
Does the gesso work with oils?
For oil painting, you use OIL-BASED GESSO. Happy gesso-ing!
I like the original.
Don't set it on fire.
Puts lighter down.
Te sigo desde España , si se pudiera traducir.👍
i thought it was done lmao before he touched it....
Do u show publicly?
Yes - I am fortunate to have my work in a few galleries throughout the US.
Value 3.7 million
Not a fan of using stencils. This video re-affirms this feeling. Also not a fan of spray paint. But hey ... a recent J M Basquiat painting was sold for 110.5 million USD ... so what do I know ! ! ! hahaha ...
Ha! I KNOW! I use stencils as another tool. Try not to get hung up - just trying new stuff to keep it loose!
Mavic Pro Re: Basquiat....you're certainly not the dumba$$ in that scenario. There's a sucker born every minute.
Mavic Pro He was massively overrated
Yuk!!!!
so from bad to bad art for people that can't drawI love it when he says Rembrandt lighting like that makes it art hate to say its still a mess
You must be retired ?
This is rubbish!
Magic!
