Why Orange First?
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
I decided to do this BobBlast because I received many questions and comments about how I get started with my daily warm-up exercises: How do I prep, measure, cut apart and tape together. So... welcome to my Studio Practices - the Burridge Atelier! Painting these Little Gems can be a very fun exercise to get started in the studio, to experiment and try out new ideas. And - just to see how loose you can get!
As a reminder, I am teaching a "Little Gems" class at the upcoming Trade Show - Artisan Expo in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My final trade show of the year is the Art of the Carolinas in November. The links for both are below.
In this Blast I start with a full sheet of 300 lb watercolor paper - and the first thing I do is apply gesso, then a mid-tone of orange. Why orange first? Because I was taught that way to paint. In art college, the first day in painting class, we wiped our canvases with an overall warm tone - orange or red. At that time, we painted with short, choppy strokes, á la French Impressionists. The technique was to leave some of the under color peek through. For me, the effect was sparkling!
In this video, I apply the first coat of gesso and orange with one product: Holbein's Orange Gesso in their cool package. Generally, this is my preferred color & gesso combo base. FYI - Holbein has 22 different colors of gesso! Of course, you can use a coat of white gesso and brush on orange acrylic paint all over the surface.
To start - Precut all the pieces and tape back together. Or - simply mark off the full sheet with the same size painting, this lesson is 10"x10" - all on one sheet.
The mid-tone color is already there, so all I have to decide is where the darkest darks and the lightest lights need to be. I sketch with my brush, keeping it fast and loose!
By now, I am off and running... and continue painting with more color, building up layers, negative shape painting and re-establishing the contrast - still leaving a bit of orange peeking through.
Orange you glad you asked???
So much fun, thanks!
I love the way you have so much fun while showing us how to loosen up & let go.

heheheh this is great!
I am converted to red or orange backgrounds, thanks Bob. JB (UK).
HA! Thank you Joyce!
Bob. Thank you for your instructional videos. I was wondering where are you getting the 300 lb paper. Thank you.
There are many sources but here's a top ranking link on Google: www.cheapjoes.com/kilimanjaro-original-bright-white-watercolor-paper.html
Try also Blick Art Supplies. I found this link by just searching Google on: 300 lb Kilamanjaro watercolor paper. Bob seems to prefer this brand.
Always fun to watch you. You have such a fine playfull energy and I guess everyone watching you , will start playing around with making paintings - so many practical usefull ideas and at the same time the true spirit of playfull wonder and curiosity - thank you for all the creative and joyfull sharing og tips and being a playing and creative and joyfull painter
You are too funny! My grandkids think you’re the smartest artist ever. Memaw how did he know I was here?!?! They call you “the Art Man.” Enjoy your videos, I’ve learned not to be so uptight and self deprecating about my practice pieces. Thank you.
My kind of painting...thank you
You're the Best Bob! Love your loose, juicy style of painting. You're a wonderful teacher and inspiration! ☆☆☆
More like BOB BLESS! God bless you, man.
Your simplicity in explaining and showing your way to paint is great.
You can make 9 paintings of 7x10 inch out of that sheet. Or 6 of 8x10 plus some note cards. Depending on what mats you use :)
Este es el el mejor canal de pintura, es genial para aprender nuevas técnicas de un gran maestro
crazy fun...love your videos.
Just after watching you paint orange, I created a piece. It turned out amazing, so very unlike i have ever painted. If only i could share it with you would like to have your views on that. Thanks for inspiring !
i love his vibe he makes me happy
What a great video Bob. Thanks for sharing. So wished I lived State side and not down the bottom of the world in little old NZ!! Cheers, DEB T
Huge inspiration always, Bob!!! I love working with warm tones 💕😊
As always a very inspirational demonstration of your warm-up practice. Its pure fun and a great way of teaching by showing your brilliant ways of preparing your workplace and the chosen materials for a theme. - I really enjoy it - Thank you for great inspiration
I looove watching your videos
And thats what we say a juicy painting
What kind of paint are you using? Gouache? Tempra? Acrylic?
“Hey I forgot to show you what it looked like.. duuuhh🤪” hahaha always a pleasure, Bob!
You are priceless 😅 It's so much fun and very inspirational watching your vids. Thanks!
Why didnt he cut 3 at 10x10 and 3 at 10x 11 and no waste ?
Love learning from u.Thank u.
Thank you Bob, so nice! You keep it relaxed and fun! 🌹🌹
I just recently discovered your channel and love it! You are so pleasant and inspiring!
Bob, how do you lose a 10x10 painting, 😂, silly. Good to see you again. I’ve not seen your jubilant vids for a long time. Now I can binge watch 😋
I have never seen painting like this. Very different. Thank you
Bob I thought you finished a bottle of vodka, until I saw how steady your hands were when you cut up those paper squares 😂🤣😂🤣👍🙏🙏
Omgosh.. just stumbled across you today! LOVE YOU!! Love your spirit! Thanks for sharing!
AND... MERRY CHRISTMAS!
I remember that feeling too
Catrina Hampton
He’s great! Isn’t he!
That peek of warmth is great, even for cool green tropical forest views, where I live in North Qld Australia.
Seeing you spread that orange background was a nice little shock that jolted my brain.
Nice!! I'll have to try orange more often. I've been doing a bright magenta after seeing an artist use a NEON purple! Also, your technique for making multiples at once is inspiring! I'll have to try that one.
Great Job Bob! Greetings from England...I'm watching and learning...keep it up!
Thanks Bob for reminding us to stay loose!
nifty and thrifty...I like it and the warm colours make you feel good ..many thanks from Loch Ness
Drumnadrochit, Scotland
I stumbled upon using a thinned burned sienna, so it's in the orange family but subdued. Warm underpaintings make for happy accidents.
Love you’re amazing techniques and enthusiasm! Wish we could get Kilimanjaro here but did find some Holbein paint!
Loved spending a week with you in Oakville, Ontario for Larger and Looser!
I'm here because The Art Sherpa recommended you. I really like your paintings!
Orange gesso! Love this. I have lots of white gesso. Maybe I’ll try to add orange to it before I apply.
Or do a quick wash of orange over a white canvas. It will be more vibrant that way. And you'll use less orange paint. :)
Paint orange over gesso'd canvas or paper. Adding color to white gesso doesn't work so well. It comes out very pastel and it's a waste of the colored paint.
Hi Bob, you mentioned the expensive watercolor paper. I've seen quite a few of your vids, but I'm still wondering why you use watercolor paper and apply gesso instead of just using acrylic paper off the bat.
Brilliant thankyou ! So useful ! Angie from UK x
I love your demonstrations and your energy...just fantastic!!!🤗❤️🙋
Acrylic paint??
Love your teaching style and the joy you bring to painting. ❤️
You are so great! Thanks for all you are sharing with us struggling artists....hope to be able to come to a workshop in Texas some day. Or would you come to Belize??? I could come to it there too.
Bob, I love your videos! So inspiring and informative!! XO
You make my soul smile in joy. Thanks for your beautiful artist spirit.
what a nice guy :D
How lucky you can practice on a $100 piece of paper and call it playing! Yup! fun to watch but totally out of touch with the real world. Don't know about you but I can't spend hard earned money on $$$$ paper to 'sketch'. Not helping the average person.
I also use some very fine less expensive paper - like Kilimanjaro from Cheap Joe's - and I always purchase when it's on sale. I also like to paint on Strathmore's Bristol paper pads and Fabriano Studio Pads - check them out too. The paper is great and affordable.
please come to the san francisco bay area and the north bay! we would love you here. let me know if i can help you find venues.
Me. Bob I’m shock amazing work thank you for you great advices...
I'm curious. Would it matter for opaque colours? Lets say i got a paper and im making it orange with acrylic painting and i want to draw on top of it with oil pastels is it going to make any difference?
Oil pastels require a rough surface. Applying gesso (any color) will smooth out the rough surface, thereby making it harder for the oil pastel to adhere. I apply gesso as a ground, giving me moire working time with the paint - before the paint soaks into the raw, ungessoed paper. Hope this helps.
Very nice. I would like more in depth explanation of the difference between using the orange or red.
Please?
Thanks for your comment - I use orange as an underpainting because that it how I was trained in Art School. I have oil painter friends who always use red. I chalk it up to personal preference. Did you google your question? You may get more info and viewpoints if you google it! Thanks!
Excellent tutorial...well done!
Are you using gouache or acrylic?
Bob whats the name of that ruler? I've been looking for one like that.
Got it at Home Depot
Love you Bob please adopt me
I love it! ❤️ thaaaanks!! I learnt a lot today!!
I love you stuff Bob!!
I love what you do!
Hi Bob. Love your informative tutorials. I have a question to ask you and would love it if you might be able to help me? I see you’ve got your white wall behind you and I’m so interested in having a wall at home like that where I can put my canvas up and paint. I currently have a brick wall just sitting there begging to be used and I’m wondering what you put on the wall What is the white board you’ve used? And then how do you fix your boards or canvases to the walls ready to paint on them? Maybe you can help me that would be amazing thanks Bob and keep up the awesome teaching. Have a lovely day many thanks Jayney in Australia 👍🤗
Szkoda ..że nie znam angielskiego....uwielbiam Ciebie Bob....chciałabym znaleźć się w Twojej pracowni choć na chwilę...jak u Van Gogha😊😊😊😊😊😊
why can't you add pigment to the Gesso, instead of paying more for them mixing it! Unless of course if you get them free, which I'm not discounting you! YOUR "GREAT"!
Another great video as always
Fun video Bob.
Thanks so much for an excellent video.
Thank you Maggie!
AWESOME !! 😊
when you comin to Maine? you'd love it up here in the fall :)
i know....you book way in advance. a girl can hope, tho
Bob I think you got a little paint on you there ;) . Fun video, great job!
I just had to come back to add this: I keep my studio fairly neat now. Not like hotel neat, but much closer to that then your studio. Which is definitely NOT a negative statement. I used to teach art in a studio that looks very much like yours there, and I miss it. So much freedom in a place where you don't worry about splatter. A truly better art experience in most ways.
Mine is a combination of that. I think organization helps creativity; but mess allows one the freedom to make messes and be ultra loose. I do wish I had a huge place where I could make messes while being organized.
This week i get holliday for to mess up my studio why in 2 weeks
I start again whit give classes afther the summer break. I hate it to mess up now why my freedom to get everything arround me what i need for to create painitings is gone now and is behind doors. Wenn i need it i must looke and get t hem out speciale wen i do mixed media. Its more freedom wen its always there for to take. Otherwise my studio is behind my front door and wen i become visit they come in in my mess....haha. But for me....no problem its my world and my life. My children hate it but here is not a hotel...haha. I stand for what im doing. On my toilet hangs a sentise : Creative people dont have mess but only ideas lays arround. So i warnt t hem so that they understand why it looks like that. To much mess is not good sometimes you must mess up. Otherwise mess give me a lot of ideas to work whit. I guess a lot of artists are like that.
Jes Ewers while they world is quiet we can make a great big mess and we can binge watch our friend Bob 😆😆😆 just wanted to comment here in case you hadn’t watched his videos in a while - they are really contagious.. lol 😂 ✌️
Nel Hoebergen And .. if having an artsy mess keeps my kids from dropping off their kids for long periods of time then it’s a good thing 🥂😂😂👏👏👏 I’m only kidding. My kids live far away. Just commenting to bring ya back to Bobs blasts during this temporary house arrest time. He’s so fun to get the creative juices going. Peace✌️
Will have to teach my first newborn Granddaughter to say Bob blast..she's only 5 months but I'm sure tiny Eleanor will love these ..x
Great to see you Bob, always eeenjoy your uplifting demos, thanks
You make it more easy to do art painting i hope you will do more videos thanks for your help your the best 👍🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨
thank you so much at last someone who gives a good start so you can go ahead and have fun
wow was i lucky seeing this today
i have partial vision but enough to enjoy colour and ink lines
Hey Bob, have you ever used spray gesso? Krylon gesso is the one I have seen at Wal-Mart. I have about 20 large boards I would like to paint over again and reuse for school. Thanks, love your Blasts!
Cool
How much is a art TRADE SHOW? just a round guess!
And here I thought I was going to find someone to help me loosen up. Perhaps at Lowe’s.
300 gram, 140 lb., please.
Yes - that is correct. 300 grams = 140 lb. Some artists get confused and think they are ordering 300 lb because they misread the label.
I actually prefer using 300 lb watercolor paper - particulary for paintings with collage, but 140 (300 gram) is perfectly acceptable too.
the canvas paper and water color paper I use always buckle. Does anyone know why?
Hi Grace - I would say that the reason why your canvas paper and watercolor buckle is they are too thin. I use 140 lb at least and it does not buckle - I use and recommend either Fabriano or Kilimanjaro (Cheap Joe's) - 140 lb or 300 lb. Thanks for your comment and I hope this helps!
@@RobertBurridge That's it! I am using 115 lbs. Thank you so much.
You are the best! Your skills are second to none.
Genio!
Adoro sua Arte.!!!
Bonjour
Vraiment trop cool et funny vos video Verrrrrry Good
Thank you so much for your 🤪😜🤣
Vous êtes un professeur génial et généreux . Merci Bob Blast !
Thank you! This helped!
Could you use a coloured house paint eg emulsion instead of gesso?
How do you mount the paintings on the wall behind you?
Grande Bob i tuoi video sono molto interessanti, spiegazioni colori e tecniche eccellenti fantastico ok
What do you recommend for cutting and trimming?
This may sound like a stupid question! I have never worked with watercolour paper much but thought it had to be soaked and taped down so it doesn’t buckle when you paint on it . Am I mistaken ?
he is using 300 lb paper, so it's very rigid. also when the gesso dries it forms a barrier that prevents the paper from getting wet.
Why not just draw the lines but wait to cut them all at the end?
Bob....you’re the best in the world on my list....
what brand/size brushes do you recommend?
Great idea! I believe Claude Monet would also under-paint his skies with pink!
Also I’ve used yellow to under paint as I find it to be too transparent not to be layered over more opaque colors.
😅 whew!
Monet did not underpaint his skies with pink though he certainly was a prismatic genius. The Hensche folks often underpaint skies with pink.
When are you coming to Miami, FL.
You are super-fun!
