  • THE ISLE OF EVERYWHERE from the Dvd GONG - LIVE AT THE UNCON 2006 available from www.voiceprint....
    Gong were formed in the late sixties in Paris by Daevid Allen following his enforced departure from Soft Machine. The band would wind its idiosyncratic way through the seventies adding and shedding members all of whom would contribute to the vision that Daevid Allen had for the band. After leaving the band himself in the mid seventies the band would continue following a different musical path throughout the seventies and beyond. In the mid nineties Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth once again took the chance to resurrect Gong and have continued to lead the band through various incarnations ever since.
    Filmed at the Gong Family Unconventional Gathering at The Melkweg in Amsterdam in November 2006 some thirty five years after its inception we have the Gong UnCon performance. The DVD includes performances from Daevid Allen, Steve Hillage, Tim Blake, Gilli Smyth, Mike Howlett, Miquette Giraudy, Didier Malherbe, Theo Travis and Chris Taylor. The UNcon was the first time that Daevid Allen, Steve Hillage, Tim Blake, Gilli Smyth, Mike Howlett, Miquette Giraudy and Didier Malherbe had all been together on stage and performed since the legendary 1977 Gong reunion in Paris almost thirty years previously. The performance captured here is not only a stunning musical happening but also historical and the cameras capture the moment beautifully.An absolute must for both fans who attended the UNcon and those who couldnt travel to Holland to join in the celebrations. Gong Live At The UNcon will be a DVD you will want to add to your collection.

    The groove is so intoxicating, this drummer has so much pocket! The blend of gliss guitar, space whisper, bubbling synth and smooth funk is one of my favorite sounds of all time!

    Listened to Gong first as a teen back in the early eighties and then drifted out of it. Learnt drums later on and got into all kinds of stuff. Recently came back to You and specifically Isle of Everywhere and that phenomenal bassline and recognized it has all those wonderfully subtle time changes, what a lovely surprise. 8/8, 7/8, 6/8 and sure I've heard 5/8 too at times

    Is anyone else disappointed that the drummer didn't play the wicked opening fill that's on the album?

    • @Spillage66
      @Spillage66 10 лет назад +13

      Yes, but also no, as no one can replicate Pierre Moerlen's unique and excellent drumming. No one!

    It's 4/4. then 7/8, then 6/8, then back to 4/4. Simple, when you know how, but Pierre Moerlen does it far better that this, or any other drummer has, or can do. :)

      Spillage66 if you think about it as 8/8, it’s a little easier to follow. in different live shows they float back and forth effortlessly. I’ve even heard a few bars of 5/8 played sometime before.

      @@Daphnse well spotted. I've also heard 5/8 in there. Listened to Gong first as a teen back in the early eighties and then drifted out of it. Fiachra it’s a trip! How they’re all one instrument... even 35 years later! Most music today that I’ve heard with complex time signatures really doesn’t come anything close to this.

    This drummer is very good, but he just doesn't have the snap of the late Pierre Moerlen. There's no shame in that, of course, since Moerlen was one of the very best.
