- No bad blood here. If anything, Ruby seems to have figured out that I'm not a threat to her. We still need to work on the my space/your space concept. That remains a little too fluid for my taste.

The bears always appear so hurt when they have to leave ..
at 4:03 Ruby calmly got up and started walking toward you, which you promptly rejected and Ruby understood yet stood relatively still. I know that you have a "friendlyship" with these specific bears, and I also know that Black Bears in particular have a "bluff then run and ask questions later" mentality when it comes to "normal" human interaction but I have to ask.. When you coughed after 4:03, were you more nervous than normal?
I did attempt to read about the bear study, that explains the tags and colors, but I no longer have an FB account so just Googled it instead and learned about it. Are you part of good folks in NC acting as sort of neighborhood goodwill ambassadors for these majestic creatures?
and if not, knowing that Black Bears are nothing to worry about (regarding human health), what can I say to others to let them know that even though they have a "bear" status (not including panda), no worries: just give them space and view the beauty from afar? I guess, how do I make people not afraid of animals they are unfamiliar with?
I think she just wants to be close to her Uncle Patrick, she is probably a little lonely and she feels safe on your porch

The fact that Ruby sat down to groom herself, while maybe 5 ft from Patrick is really something. Totally lets down her defenses because she feels completely safe. Amazing.

@@soniadowney7427Maybe, but even if it went well, it would put her in danger if she decides her other 'Patricks' might pet her too and scares someone, she could be shot by authorities. I was curious too, but the stakes are too high. It's tough because our species wants so badly to pet (and feed!) Touch is how we show our love..❤

@soniadowney7427 Well, I don't know for sure, but Patrick has won her trust by not hurting her or scaring her over hundreds of visits, including many with various sets of her tiny cubs. He has also behaved the same way when she visits, so she knows what to expect every time. He is a good man, and she is a delightful bear. We are so lucky to watch their beautiful relationship. 😍

Think that puts her firmly in the habituated category but still need to exercise cation because being wild she can still do harm. But by working to keep a distance between bear and human that helps make it a "bit" less risky.
I love how Ruby feels so safe and comfortable at Patrick’s home, a place where she can just lay out with no cares. I loved how she was sitting with her bottom on the porch. That was so cute 🥰

I think the heat and humidity is making Ruby just a little grumpy this summer. But, the way she plopped down to have a scratch and do a little grooming says she trusts you.

Ruby is so sweet and her coat is so shiny and healthy looking. She also is really alert and inquisitive; and pays attention to you when you speak to her.
