This was really helpful Bret. Please more tips on this. This was broken down so well. I have been battling with this which is one of the reasons I have procrastinated on my headshots. Thank you
Bret! so so helpful and a question I come back to over and over again. My type sits somewhere between Deloris a la Sister Act and Lawyer/Buisness woman Sanaa Lathan. So Whoopi. Grounded and Intense Whoopi 😅😂
I would describe myself as hardworking, kind, day-dreamer, and artistic. I have had people say that I act a lot younger than I really am, so maybe childlike as well. My mom actually said one day that I would be able to pull off playing the "twist villain". More specifically, the best friend who is the villain in the story. Which I thought was kind of cool.
Jamie, just my totally non-professional two cents, but if you've mostly done ensemble, that's where asking friends, acquaintances, and strangers will help you refine your type. Even asking a receptionist in a medical office could be helpful-someone who knows you somewhat, and has glimpses of your personality, but doesn't have a super-close relationship to you and will want to "tell you what you want to hear", which is what your friends may be more apt to do. Hope this helps!
I like to jokingly refer to myself as a legit Jewish baritone in dire need of a castration. Bass-baritones such as myself without the high notes of our lyrical counterparts tend to get grouped into the "buffa" or foil roles. I'm not old enough to get the roles my more classical and traditional voice is more suited for. Personality wise, I enjoy doing the gender-bending roles, especially when they're campy. I'm currently in rehearsal for Shrek the Musical as Big Bad Wolf. I think that's a good fit. But I'm looking forward to my type changing in the future :)

i describe myself to be: childlike, happy, silly, vocal, day-dreaming, hopeful, wild, kind, and determined!

Anna Wintour with a heart. OR - the love child of Mary Beth Peil (like when she was 19)
So....what if you have mostly ensemble credits?
