- In the last few decades, China has gone from technological scarcity to abundance. What sparked this shift? Economist Keyu Jin explores how China has fostered a model of innovation unlike any other and shows why understanding its competitive, collaborative approach could benefit the world -- and perhaps demystify some contradictions.

Dear Keyu Jin, Chinese groundbreaking technology happened in the 9th Century BCE
In the 9th Century BCE, the Chinese were able to melt iron like no other civilization at the time. This gave the ancient Chinese an economic advantage that lasted for hundreds of years. Besides smelting weapons, Chinese coins were minted and used as trading currency. Ancient China become the commercial leader which manifested itself in an industrial revolution. During these millennia Chinese silk became a thought-after commodity. In the 6 century BCE, silk Reached Germany via the Silk Road. Here too an increased affluence brought with it a wave of elevated cultural development.
The greatest breakthrough for Chinese civilisation is the mastery of climatic and weather patterns some 11, 000 years ago that made systematic and widespread agriculture successful.
Actually China has never been once the world highest GDP in its history !

Yeah, that's what she said but in fact she's spreading propaganda while the CCP shuts all the western views and voices to influence its people. So it's a one-way propaganda and infiltration.
This idea that other countries can work peacefully with the Chinese Communist Party flies in the face of reality. The leadership routinely censors, imprisons, and attacks its critics, from journalists to human rights lawyers to artists to social media personalities like Laowhy86 or SerpentZA; how can the CCP grow when it's this obsessed with face, and avoiding humiliation from any source? I think if the CCP really wanted to show the world they don't want to cause trouble, they should (at the very least) surrender their ownership claims to the sovereign country of Taiwan, as well as international/contested areas like the South China Sea or the Arunachal Pradesh.

Don't drink this coolaid. Traveling the world does not automatically provide one with a more correct or unique perspective of the world or even particular parts of the world, nor does one's own personal history. Thoughtful engagement with other points of view may provide an opportunity for insight, but a thesis based on that experience again does not necessarily give a person a more accurate understanding of any culture or system. It may allow a person a unique experience and an opportunity for obtaining knowledge from that experience but it does not in and of itself provide a basis from which to judge the accuracy of the presented thesis.

Everything we think we know about China's human rights abuses is the result of a cultutral filtering process, shaping reality to fit our western worldview and biases.

@@NicolasSauveur Forced sterilizations and imprisonment for maintaining your culture are ideological differences for sure, that doesn't make it any less evil. Every culture has a worldview bias, west and east, but some are just plain wrong. @@NicolasSauveur No, the solution for the problem is to tell the truth, which andreasschick did, because sunlight is the best disinfectant. Sadly, China isn't very good at that.
@@dancahill9585 "truth".. Just because something is parroted by western media over and over doesn't mean it is the truth. For example, iraqi has WMD, just saying. If you are objective, there's many ways to seek the truth. But if one is bias or has prejudice from the start then no point.
I don't intend to debate with you.. it is pointless.. but I'll just state a simple fact that you can easily verify. For all the talk about "Uighur genocide" by western media, which the term "genocide" implies destorying cultures and languages, just find a RMB currency if you can, and study it. Yes, you'll find Uighur language printed on it, together with Tibetan and other 2 minority languages. So much for "genocide" isn't it. It isn't surprising if many in the west couldn't recognise Uighur language or even saw a RMB currency, but they'll just parrot some western media propaganda of uighur genocide as the "truth" w/o attempting to verify it or exercise logical analysis. China has debunked many of the accusations but people just dismiss anything China says w/o even trying to verify or be objective, and that is not the correct way to seek the truth. Hear all sides, then one can make an informed decision. Visit xinjiang & uighur communities in China, and you can see the truth for yourself.
There are anti-terrorism operations in China, and there are terrorism attacks in Xinjiang. And that is a fact. There are different ways to tell a story. If the western media is out to discredit China, there are many ways to filter out incovenience truth and distort information to create a false narrative. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between.

China's development model isn't perfect because nothing in the universe is perfect. Let's remember that the American development model wasn't perfect either, nor the British development model. America and Britain developed on the backs of colonial slaves and on a foundation of violence.
Nevertheless, it is undeniable that China has been spectacularly successful since opening up in 1979. It is undeniable that China developed peacefully without firing a shot. We should recognize and respect China's achievement.

Or building high-end railroad networks even in places where local Chinese can't afford it or use it and now are indebted to the tune of 900 billion dollars. And the CCP plan to expand it because there is no opposition to such such unprofitable and useless ideas in China. China became prosperous in one generation. Hey I showed your comment to my Tibetan classmate and he laughed and said you're cheated by propaganda.
I can sense you are laso forced to troll here, forced by money from USA NGO fund
I guess you are the one who have been forced to listen to Western propaganda all the time!! China is all bad, and the West is all good!!! And the bad evil "CCP" is bad, bad, bad . And evil, evil, evil!! And, you in the West are all angels and saints!! Right, old kidd?? Hahaha.. hahaha.. hahaha..
The world needs more mutual understanding not hatred based on differences, the world's needs peace not war due to misconception about each other. Ordinary folks like most of us, we need cheaper technologies to ensure the advancement for us all in the world, not using technology to make threats at each other
But that is not how the politics work. The politician needs to invent a story to fear the voters to vote for them. Also they need to act as tough as they could to lure voters to vote for them in the name of whatever.... national security, patriotism etc so they could win and stay in power for another term. After that, it is not their business anymore as they all got fat pension salary to live for the rest of their life....
Do we give up ? If something does not work, change it. Or it will get worse. @@EdScanlan-so1wz
kudos to TED for providing a platform to voices of reasons in the face of the current anti-china tide. it's very courageous but i fear it won't be enough in the face of usa's 500-million anti-china propaganda budget
There is no "anti-China tide." There is an huge anti-CCP tide.

"I can buy a can of coke by scanning my face"??? Jesus, do I really have to scan my face just to buy a can of coke? No thanks! Would never want to live in a police state with cameras everywhere watching me and tracking my every move. That's why Taiwanese are like hmm.... no thanks.
Western countries too full of cameras, don't be a hypocrite, it's part of security. Even you log on to your phone, you can opt for eyes scanning or thumb print. Any crime scenes or terrorists strikes, police will scrambled to watch cctv for clues! Same goes to UK, it's full of cameras too! China's camera is not the first to implement. There are about 5 million cctv camera in the UK alone! The US has 50 million cctv.. Lmao!
Just Google and you will get the figure, followed by the rest of EU. Don't just only point at China. Cctv is not to watch for fun, who will have the time and interest to watch the public walk around, unless there's a crime scene! That's the purpose!
China: "What the World Can Learn From China’s Innovation Playbook?"
Everybody else: "How to steal IP!"
it doesn't matter, the west stole from china how to print, weave silk, make gunpowder etc. Anyone can use technology for the better of humanity. IP is created for capitalism, not humanity
We can learn what zero innovation looks like

Did you know that there’s not even a single innovation in China and all technological advancements in China all came from the West? Did you know that the roller ball point pen was able to realize in China in 2017? Electric cars in China exploding and each blueprint is a stolen technology everything from wind turbines to weapons. The China market is just being used by the PRC in exchange for technology then China builds on their own then performs the price undercut so that competitors will be out of the market. Labor cost in China is so low because they do forced labor and they also use the isolated Uyghurs from Xinjiang. Everything in China is so low.

There is very little that western countries can actually learn from this talk because she is focusing on political structure and government strategies. China political system is very unique and pretty much only works for centralized one authority countries. May be useful for countries still using monarchs or who have authoritarian governments, in a democracy it is impossible to implement. Though she can't really say anything else cause her family is in China and she is a public speaker, one wrong word and their livelihood is gone.
At least you've learned how China has been doing tech development for years, and you apparently still have a lot to learn about the real China beyond your daily media propaganda.

Incredible how she slashes Tesla and others on innovation-spending. Chinas concept is "the second mouse always gets the cheese".
China has been super pro-Tesla. Why do you think Elon named someone from China as his second in command? Also, did you ever wonder why Tesla wasn't required to form a joint partnership with a Chinese company?
Always to consumer, never the innovator
Why waste time on developing when you can just copy and steal others xD China's philosophy
Yup. no need to innovate when the US does it for them.. Just download blueprints, make a shameless copy.
To support your point you guys all drive Tesla, right? And more than half of Tesla cars made in China, so what you do? Oh, maybe you still drive gasoline cars, is it Mercedes?
