For those hating on James’ analysis. Just stop. Welding is the same as a nurse, a janitor a Server at Applebees. You can choose to be just good enough to make money doing that job. Or you can choose to be exceptional. Top tier. Welding is different in that there are so many paths you can take and depending upon the path you choose as a welder, AND THE EFFORT YOU MAKE TO BE THE BEST AT YOUR CRAFT, you can make more money than the previously mentioned jobs. The money you can make as a welder is incredible. BUT ITS UP TO YOU AS A WELDER. You need to choose from the start. Do you want to be average. Just good enough to be paid as a welder and claim the title. Or do you want to be exceptional and the top 10/20% in your craft.

You are 100% right. Some people want to be average and others want to strive to be the best.

It's gotta be tough to go weld for his suggested rates when fast food pays $16/hour.

It is. I won't weld for less than 25 an hour. Just need to get everyone to do the same.

@fernandob2275 I absolutely agree with you. However, 18-22 year olds, still on their parents' medical for years, don't look at things that way. Standing around on their phones until the customer walks up is too appealing. Granted, is that the type of person I want welding structure? Absolutely not. But there's no reason for them to want something better until they're 30 years old nowadays. Sad.

Remember, welder’s gonna have a much higher ceiling than fast food workers are ever going to get close too.

If your weld is good enough for an employer to keep you on as an employee, than it’s worth no less than 18 an hour regardless of simplicity. For 14-16 $ an hr, I would not see any incentive to improve…
Also, mig welding is the most common welding process, but, you (welding academy instructor) don’t believe any of them should make more than 20 an hour.
Future welders, there it is, when you are told the statement, “welders make a lot of money” don’t fall for it. Only certain welding industries or processes at certain locations, actually pay well, and very few to none make the fabled 100k a year without overtime. This instructor put at least 1/3 of all hand welders below 20$ an hour just because of the process used.

I feel like you’re pricing is a little out dated, 0 experience fast food jobs can start as high as 17 an hour and baggers at the grocery store makes 15, id be damned if someone looked at me and offered me any less money because the skill requirements just to start in welding is not worth my time at anything less than 20-25 I need to be able afford to live dawg

Sadly these prices ain’t wrong. And some clown is working the drive through line making 24 a hour and we getting burnt and dirty… come to think of it maybe I’m the clown.

What decade are you living in? $10/hr is less than minimum wage. 16/hr is less than minimum wage in most places too. Why would someone weld for that wage? I think you've been sucking too many welding fumes bud.

LOL, a bunch of those weren't even minimum wage for serviceable welds. Every welder I've known wants to boast they make tons of money. At these rates, they better be working 100+hrs a week to pay their rent.
