    BAKU - With about 1.6 billion adherents, Islam is the second largest religion on Earth. Yet, its followers represent less than one percent of the world’s scientists. Only a handful of people from Muslim-majority countries have won Nobel Prizes in science.
    However, up until the Mongol siege of Baghdad in 1258, Islamic science was the most advanced in the world. In comparison with the past, the modern disparity is staggering. Thus, to understand the present-day lack of scientific accomplishments, we must explore the past. In this first instalment of a new series, we will go over the rise and decline of Islamic attitudes towards science.

    Quran in its first verse says: "Read! Read in the name of Allah". Then, Hadith says "It is the religious duty of all Muslims to pursue the knowledge". @@lovelyhomeboy2782 I disagree with your comment, its the authority who liked the idea. They want to control the masses by not allowing them to say anything against the authority, if you pay attention to what was going on during that period you would see that alot of revolts were happening so in order to calm the people the khalif adopted their religion's views. You see they claimed that everything that was happening its due 'god's plan" so people would calm down and accept it as it is, which it was the opposite of what Mu'utazilla believed. Also these morons always existed sadly and they dont even realize that they are doing the exact opposite of what Islam wanted them to do and dont forget that people are corrupted by nature, they will always find a way to fuck things up to suit their benefit and it saddens me that these "scholars" are reason for everything that went wrong l. Muslims brought the entirety of humanity forward in antiquity, and that progress spurred the west to learn the languages of Islam and translate those works into western languages so that those western scientists could continue the progress that was made, even as Muslims were forsaking those same works in the face of the impacts caused by the Mongol invasions. I sincerely hope that Islam undergoes a second awakening, and that Islam finds it's way. A turn toward the sciences again by the Muslim world as a whole, would be a great boon for all of humanity. Those who bastardize the teachings of Islam in the name of their own fanatical beliefs have done enough to hold their brothers and sisters back from the progress they spurred on in antiquity, it is time to forsake those teachings and look to the golden age for guidance. I could say the same about many other fanatical groups, but Islamists stand out especially, since alongside Evangelical Christians, they've become one of the biggest catalysts for chaos in the modern world. I hope all these groups find their way, and wish no ill will upon them beyond what they bring upon themselves from the harm they inflict on others

      Ima SingusChickenus hmm, well if what you say is true, that is Jews and Christians had all the knowledge then they should have thrived not people who came from a desert. instead they were struggling to escape the hole of the dark ages. what your saying is just factually not correct. Yes, Muslims took knowledge like the zero from India but they worked on it and improved it in addition to preserving Greek and roman texts. Muslims also discovered things that no one knew about. it was a Muslim scientist who discovered reflective, refractive rays. it was ibn sina who wrote the cannon of medicine and many other things were discovered by muslims. What your saying is factually incorrect and you probably said this because you just watched Sargon of akkad or Steven crowder.

    Science in the Islamic Golden Age was wonderful, the advances in math and astronomy in particular are invaluable. That said I do think it is important to realize the anti-intellectual and anti-science bent that Islam began to take from the end of the Islamic Golden Age onward. This conservative and backwards Islam does not have to be the form that the religion takes but conservative Islam is anti intellectual and the ideas of Al Ghazali only poisoned the well. While I think conservative Islam can be especially anti-intellectual we shouldn't forget the problems that forms of conservative Christianity deny evolution and the big bang. Religion, when not practiced with an open mind, clouds out intelligence and it was a reason for the dusk of the Islamic Golden Age.

      Dannyboy I agree about fundamentalist literal interpretation of sacred scripture deterring or regressing science. I think with time these literalist strains eventually accept material proof once they align it with a theological explanation. The Vatican now has its own astronomy observatory, having accepted heliocentrism and the Belgian priest Fr. Lemaitre coming up with the Big Bang theory. Eventually Protestant fundamentalist Creationism will soften to Intelligent Design and finally to an open-minded recognition of however science can explain the universe. Wahabbi Islam, likewise, just needs time.

      I'd say that the Islamic world fell from its full grace before European and American intervention. The Ottoman empire caused stagnation as its theocratic bureaucracy caused stagnation, its power hungry and greedy sultans struggled to hold their empire together and spent their money on holding the empire together rather than developing. The only reason why the sick man didn't die earlier was German economic and military support.

    It's very worrying that a lot of muslims are becoming more conservative, look at Iran before the revolution, a lot of women didn't wear niqab or hijab and they had freedoms but now they have regressed, Wahhabism in general is not good imo, the saudis are funding Wahhabism schools in many places, I'm afraid the society where Muslim women not wearing a headscarf and tolerance of other groups is declining,
    for example in Syria and Iraq christians, muslims, yazidis, Druze all live beside for over a thousand years and now radical ideology groups like isis, Al Qaeda even some rebel militias are radical in Syria, and now those minority groups are leaving like the assyrians in Iraq, so this is very worrying to me

      someonesavetrumpfromthefoxonhishead- I know pre revolution Iran was corrupt and that the shah was a puppet of the west, but it was secular society with freedom,
      and yes huge majority of people voted for it to become a Islamic republic, and you are right that many women want to wear it but now the choice of choosing to wear headscarf is gone and all women must wear it. What I'm getting at is the ultra religious is telling every Muslim what they can and cannot do and this is a regressive society

    • @madrespeck5468
      @madrespeck5468 7 лет назад +1

      James Wilson- great point, the Arab spring was a major point in the Arab world where democracy was wanted, but now 5 years later is the Middle East more secular and less religiously conservative than before the Arab spring??
      There has been a rise of religious groups wanting to expand sharia law, Maldives, parts of Indonesia, parts of Nigeria have implemented sharia law recently, and pew research poll show that a vast majority of muslims want Shia law,
      Countries like Belgium and France have more isis fighters than countries like Morocco, so we have to figure out why radical ideology is high is among some muslims in western countries

    • @bIaZze778

      +Sabrina We were ruled by Muslims but overwhelming majority of scientists and intellectuals was of Indo-Iranian origin. The early progress at start of Islamic golden age was almost entirely done by Jews and Christians. There were high amounts of irreligious people in those intellectual circles (I wonder why?). Drinking was common. Fornication was common. Among intellectuals they were trying to fuse Islam with Greek thought (Innovation- one of the worst sins in Islam) to make Islam ration which is why among most clerics these scientists and intellectuals were labeled as heretics and apostates. Read about the role of Islam in Iranian society during this 'Islamic golden age', read the biographies. Read about how Iranians undone the arabisation of our culture.
