I see the first approach most relevant if she's disrespecting you, and the other approach relevant if she wants to be heard, but is too timid to tell you, however I could see it turning into emotional quicksand if one tries to enter into her world. In this regard, don't try to fix her, just be a good listener, so she can come to her own conclusion, whatever that is, usually just being accepted for having the emotions she's having is enough, whether one understand them or not.
Best to communicate what one self needs, vs how the other person is wrong, that usually leads to defensive mechanisms put up.
