- ArtistsNetwork.TV invites you to preview Classical Painting: The Realist Sight-Size Method with Judith Kudlow for an introduction to realism and the sight-size method working from a still-life set up. Join Judith in her Spanish Harlem atelier to learn how to set up a still life and make size measurements based on what your eyes actually see. You'll learn to stand back from your painting and use plumb lines to mark off the height of the objects of your still life. You'll also learn how to determine and mix all of your colors before you make the first brush stroke. Finally, you'll learn how to give form to the objects in your painting to achieve a natural, realistic look.
Then, visit ArtistsNetwork.TV for access to the materials lists and to stream the entire video to learn all about realistic painting using these easy painting techniques.
Judith Kudlow maintains a studio and atelier in a century-old cabinetmaker's building in New York City. She studied painting with acclaimed classical painters in New York and Italy. Her working method is based on the 19th-century academic tradition that emphasizes working from life to produce paintings based on precise drawing, careful modeling to produce the three-dimensional illusion, harmonious and accurate colors and values, and compositions based on time-honored rules.
Any artist who works hard at drawing and painting in the old way or the classical manner, works like this. Observational work is absorbing and rewarding. Nothing at all like the hit or miss techniques taught in art schools and colleges. It requires hard work and diligence.
Love your work Ms. Kudlow.
You are one of only a very few serious artist on RUclips.
A piece of gold in a sea of pretenders.
The verbal instruction was precise, concise and pleasant
instructions were rubish
This lady is so lovely. Seeing this makes me want to be her friend
Really informative video, given me the confidence to try again will my daisy compositions, in a looser format :)
Hmm, the whole sight-size/drawing portion was cut out which was the title of the clip. Strange and too bad.
You're supposed to buy the full video
Great work
how far from the set-up are you standing? How far is the canvas from the set-up?
thank you. Very helpful.
Interesting and informative video that motivates me to go back and work on my drawing skills. To maintain the otherwise high standards of this video presentation it would be helpful to have the correct spelling of "Plumb" in the "Tools" graphic at 4:00 minutes. Other Sight-Size instructions I have seen mention placing tape on the floor 5 feet from the easel to mark the artist's viewing position.
Alexander Moss the description on screen also said “fine” charcoal instead of vine charcoal which I believe is what the artist actually said. Whoever filmed and did the titles for the video was no artist
I don't understand the concept of "cheating" in drawing. Do whatever you need to do to get your image on the paper or canvas accurately. You can't do that wrong.
I dont think that is what the student was questioning. I didn't know her name until someone brought up the fact that she has countless paintings of the same subjects. Her husband's shirts and ties... and based on that I think the student was saying that was too easy to just draw the chair in every room in the house at different times of the day.
What was all that about.
Painting lesson instead of site size, i.e., no explanation why thumb was on her palette knife and how to check for size.

Very nice work but too much talking...did'nt actually see much painting.
Ok so you mark the top of the spout then get the paints out. Yeah very informative. Excuse me for thinking this was a pile of shite.
Yeah. Very odd.
Guess I misunderstood the title or did someone overedit?
Sad . 10 years later and she looks age 95 !!!!!!!
