I've read a comment that said "put him in the bed with the Captain's daughter" actually meant flog him so bad, that he couldn't walk for a while. The Captain's daughter was apparently a nickname for a whip 😬😬😬
Makes sense if true, as sailing is/was so dangerous, no one would want someone drunk, they might hurt someone.
Also, I've heard many sailors believed it was bad luck for girls/women to be aboard...
From what I've heard, this is accurate. Or at least even if it's not historical, enough shanties and shanty singers use the line that if you hear that phrase you can assume they're referencing the whip.
The Longest Johns even have a song called "The Captain's Daughter" where basically every line is a double meaning that could be referring to either the whip or an actual woman.
