Fantastic tutorial! Your detailed explanation and slow pace enabled a beginner sewer like me to follow along. I made three coats for my dog already thanks to your video! I didn't want to deal with bias tape so I sewed them right side together, flipped inside out, and then top stitched. It turned out wonderfully.
Something that I would change to this lovely coat is that if people are going to be out walking their dogo in the dark in the winter months after getting home from work, that the bias tape be switched out for some form of reflective tape so that motorists can see you dog in the dark.
Thank you, what a wonderful pattern and tutorial. My doggie is getting up there in years, and like many older men, he's going bald. He however is balding over his lower back and hips. With winter here he needs a little help keeping the back end warm and mobile during our walks and your dog coat is the perfect solution. I can't wait to get started on this project!
Thank you so much for this video. Your directions are clear and concise and the pace is perfect. My little Chigi (chihuahua + corgi) will be nice and warm for our Colorado winter. Again, thank you.
This is great. I think I'll take two layers and sew them together and flip it though. I hate using bias tape, and my mom's great dane is a big baby when it comes to the cold. :)
Thanks! I sewed 2 of these yesterday for my standard-poodle mixes, and they fit great. Just took them for their morning walk (at -2 degrees), and they came back without a shiver. I used 2 layers of thick fleece to make a warm coat. Tailoring the pattern to their individual measurements helped a lot, as my dogs are barrel chested and typical dog clothes don't fit.
Thank you for this video tutorial. I just made three for my dogs. Because I needed them done quickly, I used a wide fold over elastic for the bottom straps. I used flannel and an old towel. I debated about including a heat reflective material. I skipped the binding. I just did a zig zag around the edge. It went quick! Came out great!
Thank you so much for this wonderful pattern! my Boxer is not an easy fit and I’ve bought expensive dog coats that are a poor fit because she is a short length with a big chest and neck and I end up defacing the nicely made coat so it fits her lengthwise. With this pattern I can make coats for both dogs that fit well.
So I just started sewing in 2020 started with mask to help out the community I had a lawn mowing business and bought the machine to fix my shorts that were always getting ripped up instead of buying new ones. I think I used the machine twice since it was easier to buy new ones at the thrift store than to fix them since I really didn't know how to sew. So I was determined to self learn how to sew . I know why women sew and they are called seamstress because women always do the hardest things in life like birthing babies and sewing. So I decided that I was going to sew the coat for my Golden Retriever Max. Let me give those beginners some advice if you have the pattern and just leave it lying around and you never try to sew it that is when you fail. When you try to sew it and screw it up big time that is when you are a winner because you learn what not to do the next time. Listen to the Professor when she says to draw the damn circle and don't use corners since you will regret it when you attach the bias tape. I was so frustrated trying to make the pattern and don't draw very well I found it almost impossible to draw the semi circle and square them off. Don't do that. BTW I bought a french circle from amazon with three different ones and it was cheap instead of paying 20.00 bucks for one at JoAnns. Listen to her when she says use something else to cut out first so you don't ruin good material. I used an old sheet what a life saver that was. The Bias Tape trick is so great I use it for every big coat I have to make. It took me over a month to make that damn coat and it didn't look so good but you know what Max didn't care. I am here because I am refreshing my mind to make one for my new little baby girl Chole. I also upgraded to a computerized sewing machine with 100 different stitches, automatic threader and attached table I also have a serger and one of the extra bedroom that I threw all my junk in is now my sewing room. I mostly sew dog stuff, grocery bags, sports teams stuff last year halloween costumes and a christmas table cloth for my niece's 8ft x3.5ft dining room table whose house we go to for thanksgiving and sometimes christmas. Sewing was addicting for me like when i started playing golf and now that I am retired and have plenty of time it's a good way to spend a couple of hours doing two to three times a week I said I have learned a lot not that i am any faster. EDIT: As I'm following along the part that is very important that I missed starts at 5:22. Lucky for me it was on the old sheet and it was too long and had to cut more off but it took about 3 or 4 fittings and Max was over it.
Fantastic, the XL raincoat at the pet store was too small, I wanted a raincoat so I made this pattern from printed, cloth-backed plastic. I just drew the pattern on the back of the material. Turned out fantastic, wish I could send a photo! Cheers.
I plan on making a fleece lined coat for my dog, going to take your pattern, add a seam allowance and use a bagging out technique for the coat just to keep him extra toasty in the upcoming winter months. Thanks for the help and inspiration!! :)
@@SamanthaJD09 I was wondering that myself, so I google it: Bag Out. This refers to sewing your fabric pieces inside out, and then turning everything right side out so all of your seams, seam allowance and stitching is on the inside of your garment piece.
My skills are just beyond beginner and I'm sorry to say that I was lost after only a few minutes of the instruction video. I will try this project again after I have had more experience with patterns and terms. Thank you.
This video was so well done! I made a coat for my chihuahua puppy, instead of fleece I used two pieces of jersey material with quiltex to pad it out, he loves it! Thank you for making the pattern so easy to do!! Ps love the nails
Excellent. This should be called "Smart Sewing", but I guess Professor Pincushion is right on. Makes me want to encourage a class in school where you take math and apply it to something with a finished product. Plus they could make coats for animal shelters.
Be sure to use sew-on velcro not the sticky kind or you will gum up your machine and needle. I would also move the chest strap back just a little. I had one that rubbed on the back of the front legs and became very sore. Good tutorial over all for custom coat.
You should cut out another piece of fabric along with the fleece and sew them together. Leave an opening a turn the right sides out, much easier and warmer for the dog. I started making coats for my dog around 2007 with pretty much the same pattern you you have.
Thank you so much for this. I made my Jack Russell a coat and it fits perfectly. The engineering! Love it, and so does Piper. Wish I could share a pic of her in her custom fit cover, and she is no longer shivering as she is by my side.
Amazing! Thank you!! Unfortunately my poor girl has been sickly most of her life so she needs some adjustments to the butt end of the coat. But it fits her sister perfectly if I’d measured for her sisters belly.
Thank you very much. Love the close up shots and your calm descriptions that are very clear. Now I feel ready to tackle this--the bias tape on the curves was my stumbling block on this before I watched your video. Thanks!
My German Shepherd has severe allergies that make her super itchy, and we just got snow and we NEVER get snow. She has chewed her fur off on her back end, so ill be making her coats, pajamas, and more to aid me in the fight to keep her from scratching until I get her into the vet!
Thank you for this video I made this coat and it fitted great. Is there a way where the velcro is on the back of the neck and back instead of the tummy? Here is a challenge for you lol Thank you again
Very good measurement instructions but looking at the photo it appears that the coat will slide to the sides because the underbelly band is too narrow, and not much warmth...Also the chest is not covered. I think I'm going to buy a cheap coat on amazon and if it fits take it apart to use as a pattern!
It definitely depends on your fabric. If you're using standard fleece, it's usually 100% polyester, so it shouldn't shrink on you, but pretreating fabric is never a bad idea.
How fortuitous! Just got a puppy for Himself 3 days ago, and we all know what that means...Mommy's gonna sew her a coat :) :) She'll be the envy of the litter, a stylin' ... female dog. LOL.
finally! a good explaining tutorial on how to make the pattern! thank you so much for this :) I'm gonna use this video to make clothes to my cats hahahahah

What does it mean when you say bagging out?

Thank you! I made a smaller one for a toy poodle and was struggling to work out how to size it up to a ginormous poodle mix. Super helpful!
What were the poodle measurements. Friend has a shihzu n I would like to surprise her.
Please n thank you!
