I live in SoCal. There is a house nearby my house that is completely decked out in American Flags and Trump signs. Where I live you are more likely to see an American flag or a Mexican flag over a BLM and Rainbow flag. American flags are not as common as they use to be though.
Trump flags generally dont replace American flags, but are in addition to the American flag. Other flags are exclusionary, but the American flag is inclusionary. The American flag represents us all.

Truthfully, in the past 20 years Ive lived in NJ, Philly and Connecticut. Ive seen a lot of American flags, but I've also seen tons of BLM propaganda and rainbow flags. Usually on the same house. In the northeast, they both run in the same circles.
New York and the west coast cities have pretty much outlawed the stars and stripes. Everywhere that's smaller cities or more rural, they still fly high.
I think most southerners see things different than the news makes us out to be or just in general. I went to school and live in a very multicultural area in the south and none of us have any issues with the other. We talk in line to each other, we hold doors open for each other. But if you listen to news you would think we hate each other which is sooo far from the truth we more like we all the same, we all struggling, we all want what’s best for our families, etc.

As far as the flag issues go....I know there have been a lot of cases in the news and on social media of classrooms in schools where the American flag is not displayed but they have BLM or rainbow flags in the classrooms. That may be more what he is referring to.
