I'm surprised the AT crew is still going strong after 10+ years of making Adventure Time content. It's something that not a lot of people appreciate, especially since there are cartoons that overstay their welcome (Simpsons, Rick and Morty, Family Guy, and Spongebob) or revivals/continuations that weren't great (Samurai Jack, Clone High, and Legend of Korra)

There's one ingredient I think Fionna and Cake has that other media using the Multiverse trope has forgotten about: Heart.
With Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige has focused less on "I want to make this big story-driven artpiece" into "Let's see how much money I can make while also brainwashing the internet into constantly talking about it while working our VFX staff to death."
DC Comics is struggling to find its footing because every time they see something wrong with the comics or want to put out more issues they think "let's reboot everything to drive away our audience to make more money!"
Spider-Verse kind of gets a pass because Phil Lord and Chris Miller care so much about it, but I only bring it up because of how hypocritical Phil Lord and Chris Miller have become since making The LEGO Movie. They are constantly micromanaging their employees, and one of them even goes out of their way to cut already finished sequences and have their animators and storyboard artists start from scratch. They are less focused on making a good movie with their team, and more focused on making a flawless movie trilogy by unknowingly driving their employees under their heels.
As for Fionna and Cake, it doesn't play it off as a cheap gimmick. It uses it as an interesting setpiece to also progress character development. It's carefully thought out and although it may stumble a couple times it still shows care and heart from those who worked on it.

Personally. I believe a multiverse story can work if
    A. It has characters and stories across other universe to care for
    B. Had far more unique What Ifs on a specific effect changed
    C. Tie it to whatever theme is it going for
    And
    D. Have it not be nostalgia bait. Unless if it’s cameos or crossovers of familiar versions like in Spider-Verse

    • @bluegatito8684
      @bluegatito8684 Год назад +43

The thing about the cameos from Spider-Verse is that, while there are other adaptations of the past from Spider-Man, the most of them are Spider-Men from the comics that only die-hard fans of said comics would know, and if anything, it's used more to show how big the Spider Society really is.

    • @ToonBoom788
      @ToonBoom788 Год назад +21

True but as it’s own thing, it still works with good writing. That and even if it’s a different name from another world rather than the usual Peter Parker or Gwen Stacy or if it having the same idea of a sci fi world IE 2099 and Peni Parker, they both have different, unique, and familiar takes that still bring true to the character and doesn’t get the same kind of place boring due to the execution of it such as Spider-Man with Evangelion and 2099 involving a more Cyberpunk apocalyptic feel with bit of an edgy dark and gritty vibe to it. More so on the character than the world but the point still stands

This is how I would write alternate timelines and alternate dimensions too.
It isn't just "WHAT IF" but going beyond it.
What if is just the 1st step.. using that what if.. is what makes it great.
And in my opinion... such a story can show: "Yes that one decission you could have made, could been better and made you happier."
No strings attached all of that.. show the fact that, that one mistake may have had no consiquence to you.. but then to have you realize... "This ain't who I am...I made the mistake and found different things..."
The point of What if stories is to show a new clean creative perspective...
The point of multiverse stories is to use those clean perspectives to show stories of acceptance, overcoming adversity despite everything, loving what you have and such.
And strangely enough, most multiverse stories ACTUALLY do this even some bad ones. The problem is do you set it up correctly and pay it off.

Aside from one or two very minor things (mainly my theories not panning out, but i also would have liked another song or two), i absolutely loved this series from beginning to end, even more so than Distant Lands. We had new stories and characters and worlds as well as seeing what old friends were up to and having some beautiful closure for both Simon and Fionna and Cake.
I loved how it ended, with it potentially leaving room for another season, but also in a way that's just really nice for the characters. And I'm also kind of relieved the Lich got cubed; he's been an excellent antagonist, but if this series does go on, I would like to see new bad guys instead of just returning to the same Lich well again.
And this is one of the few IPs that can get me to enjoy a multiverse, which is otherwise a very stale trope. But it was set up in AT early enough, and the worlds we see have all been really unique and interesting, and it works for me.

Basically Fionna and Cake does what Sonic Prime tries to do. There's a lesson the protagonists have to learn through their multiverse shenanigans and their actions that obviously will have consequences especially if they aren't thinking. I know Sonic Prime is like a kid's show but it has an age rating the same as Avatar The Last Airbender. Even Adventure Time is a kid's show it just grew up over time to what we have now in Fionna and Cake.

except most earths never developed life
and those that did develop life never developed sapient life

I have nothing to say on your thoughts on Fiona and Cake. Great breakdown on how well this series works and what it does for Simon and Fiona as characters and how well it fits into the regular AT lore so well.
I will say though that yeah something like Sonic Prime probably did get Netflix going through the whole multiverse premise... Sonic IS a series very much about different realities and multiverses and that's something the Archie comics did since... 1994 even years before Spider man the Animated series finale that had the multiverse let alone Spider Verse so it's not that out of left field for Prime to do it. Especially since Prime isn't even the first Sonic SERIES to have multiverses in it. Sonic Boom had a multiverse and before that Sonic X (as Chris and Sonic's world were separate realities) and even Sonic Underground had one so Sonic Prime is really just the first to focus on that idea and even then through a unique set up in how the paradox prism even works.

Really glad that Fionna and Cake wasn't a cash grab, it felt like the creators were trying to actually give Simon closure while also showing that Fionna isn't like Finn.
She initially wants the extraordinary but later realizes that what she yearns for is the mundane, she isn't a carbon copy of Finn who, even in his old age is still someone who wants to constantly put himself in danger because thats what makes him happy.
Fionna's arc in the story is really beautiful, she goes from wanting to live her fantasy to realizing that those same fantasies are what put everyone she cares about in danger and realizing that she was much happier with her ordinary life, sure it sucked but thats what being an adult is like. It sucks and there are moments where we just want to escape from the boring aspects of life but at the same time there are simple joys that make it worth living. Talking to a friend, gardening, spending time with your pet, all things we take granted but they are all things that make us happy.

They also didn’t use or even reference the Farmworld Lich Hand at all despite that even being directly linked to the multiverse in AT. Something that also didn’t come up at all was the gliches Fionna and Cake did through the show. It seemed really important because it ended the plot line with the Ice Prince. I thought the glitched away crown was going to be utilized later. Despite underusing a lot of characters and elements, the show did better with the multiverse concept than most others that try.

I mean no offence when saying this, but the flash movie isn't a multiverse its based off of flashpoint which is time travel related.

Frist my impression of that show is kinda sceptic as i thinking why they need a spin-off of the main show about fictional fan fiction but i hold that perspective until the end. The result of that show after i saw everything about it on internet it's really outstanding and surprising for me especially it revolves Ice King's post main show event with great detail and i'm glad they did the damn job about it

I also think it's fitting that the crowns true power isn't giving it's wearer ice magic and making them go crazy. It's power is granting the greatest wish of it's first wearer.
Evergreen made it to stop the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. But instead of that happening, it fell into Gunter's hands, who wanted nothing more than to be like the man who raised him. So he ended up getting killed by the asteroid.
Furthermore, the crown drove Simon mad, but it let him live to raise Marceline who stopped the world from being taken over by vampires.
The crown isn't good or bad. It all depends on the circumstances.
I also think it's fitting that Simon does the same as the two ice elementals we've seen. Evergreen and Patience both did everything in their power to prevent chance, but ultimately failed.

Marshal and Gary’s plot also perfectly fit the theme of being observant of when people are sacrificing too much for your benefit. Marshal was trying to cut out his mom and find independence from her and nearly gives that up to support Gary’s dream, but Gary does what Simon should have done with Betty and intervenes, reminding Marshal that he has worth outside of what he can give to Gary.

I’d also like to say that Adventure Time had the multiverse referenced as early as season four. In the episode “The Lich” the word is specifically mentioned, so while the hype of the multiverse probably helped this show, it’s not the only reason it did it
