    For someone struggling with depression, being told that an antidepressant will take weeks or months to work can be frustrating. Yet this delay is also the key to these medications' ability to help. Find out why in this video.

    Antidepressants changed my life. I inherited depression from my father’s side and I always lived with functional depression, and I thought that was normal. Until recently that I started taking medication for it, I feel my whole thought process changed, and I do think I have more clarity and can make better decisions and be in peace with my emotions

      Although I’m only 15 it’s quite hard to process happiness, after you’ve spent almost all your conscious life with ADHD and depression thinking “Yeah this is what happiness feels like.” And really it’s extremely temporary and then after that maybe week of enjoyment (not happiness) you feel hollow and think there’s something wrong with you. You think is what I’m feeling normal? Why does everyone look so accomplished and prideful? You get sadder and sadder and realize that things that once brought you joy don’t do anything for you anymore yet you still want to do them. You realize this and wonder, is this depression? You start to doubt yourself and think “No, I’m probably just making it up for attention.” :(

I remember when I would go cold turkey off of it, I would curl up in a ball and ball my eyes out. I'm still very depressed and mostly focus on the negative. Alienation is the feeling of being isolated or separated from something, often a group or society. It can also refer to the sense of being disconnected from one's own feelings, thoughts, or identity. Alienation can be caused by a variety of factors, including social isolation, discrimination, and the experience of living in a society that is different from one's own values and beliefs. In some cases, alienation can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and resentment. However, it can also be a source of creativity and individuality, as individuals may seek to find their own voice and place in the world.

    The reason Anti Depressants take so long is because the entire effect that causes the anti depressing is based on the brain building a tolerance to the anti depressant (At least with SSRI's) this takes at least a month in most people. Usually the actual first effect of anti depressant SSRI (on the first day of taking them) is more depression, oddly.
    They drug manufacturers of SSRIs dont truly understand how they work. They just have a vague idea. Which is insane when you really think about it.

      You have a good point! But the theory on BDNF is very possible even tho I'm not sure it has to be achieved via anti-depressants. I really don't buy it on the chemical imbalance thing on the brain because chemical imbalance is not the cause but symptoms. The cytokine theory is very possible IMO because fish oil can improve depression symptoms but they inhibit cytokines and increase neurogenesis

      KO S I’m on Lexapro 10mg and Welbutrin 300mg. It is really a very subtle improvement - it’s less about making me feel “good” and more about keeping The extreme lows away. I wish wish wish the feeling would have stayed from the beginning but honestly I was taking Paxil and about 40mgs a day / it was probably overload which is why I was flooded with serotonin. Your body regulates over time no matter what...plus weight gain is likely. Very interesting topic. The really tricky part is that my experience with bipolar shows that this is doubtful. The function in bipolar people can change within a day when given these medications but this is due to a secondary system, ( the bipolar switch) but not due to the underlying effects of the medication. The person can switch easily without it anyway, the medication still takes effect in a few months and it may also aggravate the bipolar mixed episodes. This is very important because having the medications work too quickly becomes a serious and dangerous side effect. This seems to disprove part of the theory but it is still notable that CBT is very good at treating normal depression.
    My 2 cents of theory and explanation of this is that it is likely that psychology can cause an issue in the serotonin systems in the brain that is of a neurological nature. This would mean that the symptoms seen are indirectly rather than directly determined by the depressive nature of the person and thus treatable by medication and psychology simultaneously.

    • @MemorablePsych

      I thought about putting in a brief aside about how this discussion would not apply to bipolar depression, but in the interest in keeping the video short and sweet I left it out. What we know from decades of research is that bipolar depression is a completely different thing than unipolar depression, both biologically and psychologically. Medications that work for unipolar depression do not work (and may even be harmful) when used for bipolar depression, and vice versa. So I don't know if I would agree that the effect of antidepressants on bipolar disorder disproves this theory necessarily; it's probably more accurate to say that this discussion only applies to unipolar depression and that something else entirely is going on with bipolar depression.

      I completely understand where you're coming from, I myself have bipolar disorder. According to Polar warrior, up to 30% of us are initially diagnosed with MDD (me for example) and start taking ADs. But they trigger manic episodes and worsen mixed states, and yet it is still so widely common to be misdiagnosed. I do feel that it completely sets our brains off track when there isn't much balance to begin with.

    Very useful video. The goal should be to take only one ADS of the lowest mg. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts [overthinking]. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations when taking a walk, before sleep, in school, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media, take morning sunlight walks and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

      That's why antidepressants are not meant to be a long term solution. Antidepressants are meant to stabilize / improve the mood of depressed people. It should always be combined with a therapy sessions with a psychologist in which they learn better ways to cope with their issues or to better understand what causes their depression and how to function in the world even though you feel depressed for long term effects. Some people here say they use them for years but that's not what those drugs are made for.

      In psychiatry, yes, psychiatric medicines have been used for years, as long as the patient feels depressed when leaving the medicine. This logic in psychiatry is the same as that used in all mental illnesses or disordrlers. According to their claims that mental disorders are the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, and medications correct this chemical imbalance. Personally, I am not convinced of this explanation, even many psychiatrists believe that these are just theories and speculations (the theory of chemical imbalance in neurotransmitters and the like), but they consider psychiatric drugs as the possible solution
      and the available solution now between our hands. Certainly if the patient is able to solve his psychological problems by using Cognitive Behavior Therapy or any Talk therapy with a change in his circumstances of his life, then this is considered the correct and excellent way. But this way cannot always solve mental disorders, which makes the need for medications justified and reasonable. I personally refuse to resort to medicines except for necessity, because they have severe side effects on the patient and deplete the body over the years and their long-term effect may lead to early death or other health problems, this is not to mention the dullness that the medication causes, which makes the patient like a zombie lead an empty, tasteless life. That's why when first effects appear you start to gain weight exponentially (especially is you consume refine sugar in any form which is common in people with depression). Also when you change medication, the new one doesn't take long to take effect. It's the same with anti-psychotics.
    Antidepressants do NOT HEAL, they suppress symptoms to make YOUR HEAL (brain rewire, CBT, DBT) easier. Accelerating the healing process is important to reduce prolonged side effects of medication like obesity and sexual dysfunction (especially in adults).

    Why then do psychostimulants prescribed for ADHD improve mood more quickly than antidepressants? Is it because they increase the amount of neurotransmitters in greater quantities, yes, and antidepressants slightly increase the amount of neurotransmitters and a little bit every day after taking antidepressants and therefore the bad mood then goes away? Probably the difference in time is due to the intensity of the increase in neurotransmitters, that antidepressants a little at each dose increase, normalize and stabilize the number of neurotransmitters, the brain is rebuilt more smoothly, and psychostimulants such as Ritalin increase the number of neurotransmitters at one time more strongly? Is this why antidepressants do not have such a strong risk of addiction as psychostimulants?

    If SSRIs are so effective in relearning negativity and promoting a more positive view of life, why then is withdrawal from these drugs so very difficult? You might conclude that the new positive attitude would remain even when the actual drug and the levels of seretonin available to the receptors are in decline. But so many people experience depression renewed with an even greater force than before and often abandon the withdrawal from the drug.

Really cannot comprehend why this is done, especially for a topic here for people who are naturally depressed. I would expect such sufferers of depression would not like distracting loud or heart beat raising background sound when wanting to truly understand what this YT is informing us. 've been taking citalopram (10mg) daily for three weeks and I had a huge increase in anxiety after three days. It was so bad I went to hospital. I live in a rural area and my neighbour kindly drove me to hospital at 4.00am on the day. I wanted an injection to calm me and/or advice on how to stop the tablets. They talked to me instead which calmed me down and I dediced to continue. Since then I've had periods of high anxiety for a few hours here and there, the last few days it has worsened again (so from about day 18 to 21), and I sometimes go for a walk as I can't sit still and have considered going to hospital again but haven't yet. My doctor has prescribed me valium and another anti-anxiety medication to get me through. I am so hoping this anxiety surge is temporary, from what I've read 'the anxiety stops after a few weeks' and 'it can take six weeks for my system to fully get used to it' - so all I have to do is wait. Can people reading this, who had anxiety early on when taking citalopram - which later went away - please comment on their experience, and also how long it does take to go. Many thanks.

If you are going crazy with anxiety for a few hours they’ll be many hours each day when you’re not. If you read the diary back this will reassure you, which will mean when you next have a high anxiety spell you can remind yourself it’s only brief, it’ll pass, and that will make the episode more bearable.

I'll take Psilocybin (which has a far higher safety profile) ANYDAY, I'm diagnosed clinical depression and social anxiety disorder. Microdosing on top of daily exercise has been a literal life saver. Psilocybin fits into the 5ht Serotonin receptor like a key, it's NON toxic and doesn't cause horrible withdrawals or life threatening side effects like antidepressants do.

    Well if benzodiazepine medications can take effect immediately within 15 to 30 minutes and Adderall can take within 15 to 30 minutes why can't antidepressants just take 15 to 30 minutes to make you feel undepressed should not take note 6 weeks or 8 weeks to take 30 minutes and you feel better but that's a dangerous thing to give to someone with bipolar

  • @msvergara
    @msvergara Год назад

    most likely because these pils are mean too increase your levels of serotonin and serotonin has NOPTHING to do with depression. You are feeling better because that was the extend of you depressive episode, not because the pil is working

    Antidepressants take 6 to 8 weeks to do something. Good or bad. Nobody knows. Kratom takes 30 minutes and is completely natural and it takes all the depression and anxiety away. But the government and the medical community want to take away the best treatment because it hurts their wallet.

    • @Dogmicspane
      @Dogmicspane 5 лет назад +9

      Kratom cannot be taken daily/long term, so it isn't really comparable to antidepressants. Which is not to say kratom hasn't helped me greatly.

      Until your brain is damaged enough by those drugs to not recognize the side effects anymore... and then you're addicted. Perfect scam and too evil to believe.
      Inflicting brain damage should be the absolute last resort, not the first reflex.

    Negative affective bias may possibly be a more real view, but it is 100% a less useful view. We don't have the cognitive ability to see reality anyway

      @@MsKen420 How are you now? .
