    Wow, I've *never* heard of flashing the deck stringers but it makes so much sense! I've got a lot of flashing tape left over from installing windows and the next time I build a deck / platform / stairs I'll make sure to flash the top of the stringers.

      It's a big improvement for sure. Especially, when you live in an area with lots of rain.

    Faced with a decks that have incorrect decking gaps, I’ve used a skilsaw and an old blade to cut a wider gap. It’s a hassle to reseal the edge, but it prevents future sadness. Another helpful tip is to observe the crown of the grain and install the crown up so as the board dries out, it doesn’t for a concave “dish” that holds pooled water.

    When we bought our current home, it had serious deck problems (I knew it). I had a deck contractor come out and he said that two different deck installers built different parts of the deck! Some of the boards are spaced properly; other are jammed together and rotting on the edges and board ends. I'm having lots of fun replacing the rotting boards, ha-ha! ~ Joe

      Hey Joe, It's good that you're replacing the rotting boards and fixing it properly. Decks can last a long time if you remove the odd board that needs it. You're doing everything right!

    I have never used/applied joist tape before because what ive built has been piers over saltwater. Does it say how much longer it can increase joist lifespan on instructions?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  Год назад

      Some tape manufacturers claim that it can add up to 10 years on the substructure of your deck. I've been using G-Tape which is acrylic and AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturer's Association) certified. They have screw water test results on their website and a long term seal test, no leaks after 20 years. Thanks for the question. You must have amazing views from the decks you've built!

    #2 was a great maintenance tip, but I’d argue it has nothing to do with installation
    I’d say another good tip would be about how to orient the boards (crowning/cupping)

    What type of tool did you use to clean the gaps in the wood?

    • @marlonestrella8105
      @marlonestrella8105 Год назад

      I would use a rubber spatula. I seen other videos of people using these so it doesn’t scratch the decks surface

    • @DaruDhillon

      @@marlonestrella8105 That's such a good suggestion Marlon! You can also use a wood bbq skewer, dull end to use in between the deck boards.

    I disagree, the deck is rotting from the moisture below it as it is too low to the ground. For low decks, there is a different process.

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  6 месяцев назад

      This deck is 3 feet off the ground with one side fully open for air flow. It was poorly built and improperly maintained.

    You contradict yourself by saying wood needs to breath then installing deck flashing over the joists. If a section of wood is going to rot, it will rot regardless of whether is has deck flashing or not. Wood rots where there are splits, untreated cuts and insufficient depth of preservative applied in production, allowing water to penetrate. Adding deck flashing will actually speed up the process of rotting because the tape traps moisture and inhibits airflow and ability to wick away - I've seen it many times. Deck flashing is unnecessary, overkill and has more cons than pros. Since flashing traps moisture it provides ideal condistions for moss and algae growth which is a common problem with composite decking. Applying a coat of preservative is a faster and cheaper option.

      It’s always best to research what works best in your area and what your decking manufacturer recommends. 👍🏽

    poppycock. Deck boards don't cup because they are too tight, they cup because they cup because wood naturally wants to expand and contract. Joist tap is not necessary for joists if they are pressure treated.

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  6 месяцев назад

      Yes deck boards will expand so you have to allow a small gap for that expansion to occur.
