The reason the e30 used a 4 cylinder is because the m division wanted to make it as light as possible. I think they considered a straight six but the extra hp wouldn’t have made up for the extra weight.

E30 M3 and E34 M5 are only 2 M cars what have less cylinders then a normal car. 320,323 and 325 had I6, and facelift (1992 upwards) 530 and all model year 540 had V8

Hitting the train head on will destroy any GTA Online car with one hit regardless of if you have full armor. The armor protects against bullets, not collisions.
