I love how the original sounded solemn, like she had already come into terms with the fact that she will never have an identity. But in this one, she's more affected by it- maybe even furious. THIS IS AMAZING
While Emily’s haunting performance will forever be my favorite, I absolutely adore how much emotion this version has. It gives a completely new angle to Jane, and I love when actors make characters their own instead of copying the original.
I like seeing the differences in how this character is portrayed. In Emily Rohm's version, Jane Doe is very calm and is incredibly doll-like, and later in the song, she's rather sorrowful, openly lamenting about her fate, which is very reasonable given what's she's been through. With this version, however (I unfortunately don't know the name of this actress, although I think she's quite marvelous), Jane is very much an emotional character, coming off as more angry than anything else, which, again, would perfectly suit her given what the character has endured. She also keeps the doll-like movements (almost more like a marionette, really), which is a nice touch. All in all, both portrayals work wonderfully, and I love it. :)
I love how she sounds more like a child in this version, it fits just perfectly with the way she acts, with her puppet like movements and doll-like form. This rendition is so unique, and I absolutely adore it
4:33 the little gasp is just. oh my god. also i just realized that her spinning in the air could be her falling and like how she fell out of the cart. this is so good. ALSO WHEN THEY HAVE THE FLASHLIGHTS IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE LOOKING FOR HER HEAD
I never once thought about her spinning around might symbolize her fall from the coaster! That’s brilliant! Her singing up the scale and then down makes me think of a rollercoaster too since she goes up slower and then come down faster.
Her being like a rag doll here makes more sense then Since rag dolls have no agency of their own. Just moving to how fate/their owners move them. Being torn apart by the owner/fate/death
I love this rendition! I like how in the original jane was very doll-like in her movements, very rigid and stiff. This version was very different but slightly different, almost like a marionette or puppet of some kind, and this was exemplified when she was floating through the air. The original jane in the air was also pretty stiff, but here she was limp like a puppet. I loved it so much!
It may be a coincidence but I think it has to do with the style of doll they're basing themselves on. In the original Jane's head looks more like a porcelain doll that wouldn't have much range of movement whereas this version looks more like a ragdoll
@@rayann712 It also is linked in medical science. It comes from Rigor Mortis (the body becomes stiff after death, Pallor Mortis or pale skin as well as the body having a drop in body temperature after death) at least in Emily Rohm’s interpretation. With Ashley it seems although she adopts that stiffness, she also has a rag doll as though she could have either fallen out of the cart, or as the cart impacted her before decapitation, the force would have sent her flying in a ragdoll fashion.
I love both Emily Rohm's and Ashlynn Maddox's renditions of this song equally, but the more I listen to both versions and compare the two I get very different vibes from the two, and even two possible scenarios for the overall plot, based on audio alone: Rohm's gracefully haunting vocals make it sounds like as if either Jane Doe/Penny Lamb has been stuck in the warehouse limbo for quite some time before the events of the musical and has mostly come to terms with her situationーthus making it look like as if The Cyclone Roller-Coaster Disaster happened twice in total and that Penny Lamb died in the first roller-coaster incident, before Karnak was even builtーOR Penny Lamb throughout her life was just really, really graceful, calm, collected, but a bit creepy, not unlike a porcelain doll, and that part of herself is literally the only thing that stays with Jane Doe. Meanwhile, Ashlynn Maddox's vocals sound more... recent. More fresh. Unlike with Rohm's, I get the feeling that Maddox's Jane Doe/Penny Lamb actually died along with the rest of the choir, and she is just not having it. Maddox's Penny Lamb that will become Jane Doe here to me comes off as more expressive. Not as graceful and creepy as Rohm's porcelain doll-esque performance, but more ragdoll/marionette-esque and somewhat vengeful.
Maybe this version of Penny was more like a "i'll follow you around and do everything you want to do because I want to stay with you and feel important" character Which would be really sad because we're comparing her to a rag doll or a puppet, someone who is easily controlled, someone who probably didn't want to ride the cyclone but seemed forced because the other kids rode it too
I really like the added notes at 1:05. And of how at the seconded of the going high to low notes you have the choir screaming except for her, you can barely hear her, because they're screaming so loud you can't tell if she's there or not. Edit: during the second raising "Ooh ooh" she raises the "Ah-aahhh!" a note higher. It's just a little hard to hear.
The way she moves is mesmerising, so much that my professional theatre friend actually thought that flying Jane doe was an actual rag doll!! SHE SLAYED THIS
IKR?? I think they made it more realistic to make it sound like Jane was actually screaming in pain from the crash (apparently the notes were supposed to represent Jane’s screams in the accident so :)
HOW DID THEY DO THE FLYING??? It makes them seem doll-like and possessed kinda like?? This is hands down my favourite rendition of The Ballad Of Jane Doe from not only the fantastic singing but because of the lightning, atmosphere and everything about it Infinite/10 Will play a billion times over for the rest of my life
a normal fly system would have a harness around her waist and wires connecting her to the battens at the top of the stage. however, this fly system wouldn’t allow the spinning or her to act like a rag doll and is pretty stationary. this system has a mechanical arm that connects to her waist with a harness under her dress. this arm is connected to the floor and can spin and move with much more ease than a traditional fly system. since she isn’t balancing up there and is secured into the arm, she can be as doll-like and move as much as she wants without the risk of flipping over and overturning her balance. they use a similar system in wicked on broadway to make elphaba fly in defying gravity. i’ve never had the privilege to work with this type of system, but i would love to some day. hope this helped!!
@@blessedANDunimpressed wait, really?? i could’ve sworn she attached at the waist!! welp, thanks for letting me know, i edited my comment so i don’t spread misinformation
@@blessedANDunimpressed this one is actually closer to Bj on Broadway on the harness method the connection pole hooks to her harness in the back of her dress. Then she can do her bit. The pole can be either brought in and hid, more similar to the og production, or it can be raised from understate and hid in the dark as a option, a little more difficult but it is more mystical because it really can’t be hidden and happens in plain sight. I would personally if I had to do it use some black light to hide the mech and use that to do some trippy visuals but it would help hide the rig while making a vibrant image on stage
@@timnco2752 Sorry to say but that trick isn’t the one used in this rendition as that one wouldn’t allow as much free movement and would result in the body not being able to be as doll-like Also I don’t think it would be as easy to hide the machine thing in the back because of the blue lights
I really like this one a lot! In the original she seemed to have come to terms with it, though it was sad and confusing for her, in this one she seems mad and furious over it, she will never know her actual name and it hurts. It’s almost like I can feel her pain, some of the high notes while she’s flying are almost played off like screams of anguish. In the OG Jane Doe was very stiff, the actor even saying it was to mimic a doll, in this one she’s limp, like gods mockery of a marionette. This one definitely hits the feels harder.

im OBSESSED With this jane. the fact that ashlyn can keep her notes while being spun around is so impressive. and i just love her portrayal of jane overall
1:59 the scream stood out to me. Both as a guttural expression of what Jane or any of the characters might be feeling, but I also wonder if it’s in there for a set purpose, like if it was so the actor playing Jane could take a breath without interrupting the vocal climb as it almost seems like there’s a break It’s interesting to think more about set and scene design especially for a musical, as I was in a play Edit: just read and apparently that’s not a scream
Actively had to find her name to find this version, I love it so much, it has so much emotion and you can tell she was invested in the character Sucks the full upload with her got removed a few days ago but this alone is still a worthy watch
It’s sad because this performance is so beautiful, but the way this theatre’s crew (not cast!) treated the original actor of Ricky because of his disability is so gross
This entire production is incredible but I adore the band in the back, the addition of the drums and organ give the ballad a new power that isn’t quite there in the other performances. The vocalists were obviously incredible too
THAT'S SOME CRAZY PERFORMANCE????!?!!!! The way her limbs flail around are exactly like how a doll's would is crazy

I love everything she changed or added, it just adds originality to her portrayal of Jane Doe and it makes it really feel like it’s her original role because of the new things she did to the song and I absolutely love it
is nobody gonna talk about those notes in 4:20 🫢
I am so gagged at this this is the best vocal performance of this song I’ve ever heard
I love her doll-like movements!
im OBSESSED With this jane. the fact that ashlyn can keep her notes while being spun around is so impressive. and i just love her portrayal of jane overall
the way she sings is so clean omg. and the way she sings so well while literally spinning sround and shit??? insane. so much talent here
This girl’s range was incredibly good! Amazing job
who tf was that guy who creamed his pants in the first 30 seconds 😭
🤣🤣🤣
I JUST NOTICED THAT NOW BECAUSE OF THIS THIS IS SO FUNNY
i would DIE for the full show if anyone has it

this is my favorite jane doe preformance !! I really love how they did the in-the-air part with her going limp at some parts like a doll!!
3:30
(This is just for mee)
1:59 the scream stood out to me. Both as a guttural expression of what Jane or any of the characters might be feeling, but I also wonder if it’s in there for a set purpose, like if it was so the actor playing Jane could take a breath without interrupting the vocal climb as it almost seems like there’s a break
It’s interesting to think more about set and scene design especially for a musical, as I was in a play
Edit: just read and apparently that’s not a scream
those vocals are so strong omg i love
THE “DOES NO ONE CARE?” GOT ME AAREGG
Actively had to find her name to find this version, I love it so much, it has so much emotion and you can tell she was invested in the character
Sucks the full upload with her got removed a few days ago but this alone is still a worthy watch
What’s her name? Is it Ashlyn Maddox?
@@whiteclover6686 It is! :)
2:01 SOUNDS LIKE RHEYRE SCREAMING ON THE CUCLONE HOLY SHIT ITS SO GOOD
THE SCREAM?! OMG
I think someone mentioned this already, but I like how Jane looks like her bones are breaking midair or something
had the fortune of seeing this production live! trust me, it was even more enchanting to see it onstage!
It’s sad because this performance is so beautiful, but the way this theatre’s crew (not cast!) treated the original actor of Ricky because of his disability is so gross
the way she moves is so satisfying
Wow… this gave me just as many chills as the original, this is AMAZING
OH MY GOD THE EXTRA HIGH NOTE HER JANE JUST MAKES ME AJDDLJSHJKDJAS
It’s so hard to believe that this and my life is awesome is in the same musical
Man, the note that sounded like she falling from a great height was chilling
genuinely almost started crying. like there are tears currently in my eyes
This entire production is incredible but I adore the band in the back, the addition of the drums and organ give the ballad a new power that isn’t quite there in the other performances. The vocalists were obviously incredible too
I'm binging performances of the Ballad of Jane Doe tonight and this one is just amazing.
00:57 that ornamentation and articulation of notes is fire. LOVE it!!!
THOSE ARE SOME STROOONG VOCAL CORDS!!!
Definitely my favorite version of the Ballad of Jane Doe.
She looks like a marionette more than a doll, and I absolutely love that
there are actually so many productions where she has the choreo of a marionette too its so cool! (roxys downtown, station theatre, ect)
imo I think it should also be toddler bc a toddler probably had the doll last
I love this rendition of Jane Doe, she feels more doll like and the movements when she's in the air feel more like a possessed doll!
My toxic trait is thinking I could do this-
I’m not even a soprano 😭😭
I think that this is what Jane Doe felt on the inside while Emily's is what the choir saw on the outside especially 3:38!!
this one makes me cry bc of the true pain in her voice
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL OH MY LORD
