Born and raised in Hackensack and am 76 and ate in the Manna an extreme amt of times. It was the last place we ate before moving to Fl in 2001 just a few days after 9/11 and of course that is what everyone was talking about. I miss my town soooo much and the White Manna.
Steve’s sizzling steaks is also close to Rutts. Super iconic place for great steak. Babe Ruth was a fishing buddy of the original owner Steve. Billy Martin used to sit at the end of the bar. Worth the trip.
Thanks for introducing me to a new Spot. I was always fan of the classical White Castle Sliders. But these ones actually look a lot better. More bang for the buck. And I love traversing through all of the different areas of North Jersey and Bergen County. Thanks James!
Nice video. Lived in Jersey City for awhile so I've eaten my weight in White Mana, not to be confused with Hackensack's White MaNNa. The Jersey City Mana is a round space age building which was actually used at the World's Fair and it's open 24/7 so that location gets the edge. Definitely a cool joint to check out for those looking to explore.
Grew up a Maywood boy, went to Hackensack High, we all absolutely loved White Mana, now living in North Carolina whenever I'm in Jersey. I definitely stop back at White Mana and Rutts Hutt, make B&W Bakery a must do stop too
White Manna is on my foodie list of places to visit and I can't wait ! The hamburgers look fantastic along with the fries. White Manna = one of life's little pleasures LOL Great video James and you made me hungry !!
Hackensack....Reminds me of Brewster's Millions. I believe Richard Prior plays for the Hackensack Bulls Minor League Team. So brings back good memories!!! And it's cool that Hoboken is where Baseball was Born!!! The White Manna sliders are kinda round, whereas the White Castle Sliders are kind of square-ish. But definitely looks very filling and satisfying. The onions/pickles add a nice touch for sure. Thanks for the wonderful review James. Always enjoy and appreciate you videos!!!
If you went to Cranberry Junction, you were right across the street from 2 other Hackensack institutions that are right next door to each other. One is Lido Restaurant who makes a solid NJ bar pie and the other is Cosmo’s Salumeria, and awesome Italian deli that makes amazing hero’s and a pretty solid roast beef and mutz with gravy on Wednesdays. Two of their go-to sandwiches are the #1 which is basically their version of an Italian hero (ham, Soppressata, prosciutto, gabigool,, salami) with homemade fresh mutz and sharp provolone…they make a spicy version of it on Fridays. Hackensack is low key a solid food town…but I prefer MaNa in JC🤭
Just loved this video! Thank you for a trip to another unique restaurant that's off the beaten path. I've been to both White Manna places and they are equally great. NJ has some terrific spots. I live in Manhattan and have a car. Most of my grocery shopping is done there, at half the price. One place you need to try is Hiram's in Fort Lee, just over the GW Bridge. Incredible hot dogs and chili dogs. Prices are low too. Their hamburgers are alright, nothing to write home about. But the dogs are superlative.

I had eaten at their Jersey City location several times in years past and enjoyed the food and the quirky atmosphere. I hope you get their soon. Cheers.
Absolutely magnificent. I think you mentioned you had to transfer at Secaucus. What train/rail line did you take from NYC to Hackensack. I wonder if there is a easy way to get to Patterson from Manhattan. Thanks James.
Thank you! I forgot which train I took to Secaucus, but a lot of the Jersey trains stop there. At Secaucus, I transferred to a north bound Pascack Valley train which took me to Hackensack. I'm not sure if there's a train that goes to Patterson, but I think there might be a bus which goes between the city and the Port Authority Bust Terminal in NYC.
10 to 15 White Castle cheeseburgers?! I forget you're a runner. It has to go somewhere. I would look like snake that swallowed a bowling ball. I would love to see you make some content on the running - cheers! 😁
Nice video James. Looks like you are spreading out to other areas outside NYC. I haven't had the pleasure of having a meal at White Manna, but will certainly do so when I am in the neighborhood. I also saw your video about living in Astoria. I grew up there on 45th Street and 30th Ave and went to St. Joseph's as a kid. Great Greek restaurants on Ditmars as you well know. I like Taverna Kyclades, but you can't beat most others in the area. Stay well.
Thank you! Yeah, I'll go anywhere for good food and White Manna was a great spot! Absolutely! I really like Greek cuisine and I've been spoiled living in Astoria with so many amazing options with Taverna Kyclades being one of them!
@@Jamesnu I feel your pain on the cost of rent in NYC. Many folks moved to Astoria, LIC and other locales as Manhattan went through the roof. Forest Hills is a good option as well as Bayside. I lived in the West Village on Charles Street for about 5 years and moved after I got married. Many fond memories.
@@kevin7151 Yeah, it can be tough with how expensive things are out there. I haven't explored Forest Hills or Bayside yet, but I've heard great things about those neighborhoods.
Hi again, James. What I find amazing about your reviews is that almost all of them are of places that I've been to and liked, or at least have heard of... and you're from Chicago. (No knock against Chicago; I've been there many times and like the place.) I did not know, actually, that Hackensack was the original location of White Manna... and Hackensack is familiar territory for me: I've spent a lot of time in and around Lodi and Hasbrouck Heights, beginning almost 50 years ago! (Also see "Movin' Out" by Bill Joel.) Now I've driven past the Jersey City location many times, but never stopped in. That location, of course, is on Tonnelle Ave, which is used to get between the Lincoln Tunnel and the Holland Tunnel, among other things. As far as I know, the name Tonnelle Ave. is pure coincidence, but you pretty much have to have spent time driving around this area to know where it is.
Thank you for watching! It makes me happy to hear that you've liked a lot of the spots I've visited. I really enjoyed White Manna and I really have to go to the Jersey City location sometime. The story of the two restaurants is definitely pretty interesting. I was amused to learn that the reason why the Jersey City restaurant only has one "n" in "Mana" was because of an error when their sign was serviced. Both restaurants however, seem like iconic establishments!
Nice afternoon! I've heard wonderful things about White Manna, but haven't been. If you like that vibe, try Louis' Lunch in New Haven (CT), or All American in Massapequa on Long Island... I literally drive from Queens often just to go there. But, I can walk to my local White Castle, so I have that going for me😂
Haha! I'm still a fan of White Castle too! White Manna is definitely worth checking out sometime. I've been to Louis' Lunch and really enjoyed it! I've never been to All American, but I just looked it up and it seems like a place that I would really like! Thanks for the recommendation!
I've noticed that burger places never have good fries. I think it's by design so it doesn't take away from the burger. In n out, shake shack have terrible fries. If you want good fries go to a bar that serves mussels and frites or steak frites to get good fries
I never thought about that, but yeah, it does seem like there are a lot of great burger places where the fries don't match up to the quality of the burger.
Thank you! Yeah, the burgers are good, but it's the combination of the classic restaurant atmosphere and the affordable prices that make White Manna a place to try!
@@Jamesnu I believe there used to be 4 locations at one time. Another for you to try is 30 Burgers. It’s a small chain in NJ their burgers are quite good. Also try Rocco’s in Roxbury Township. Their burgers are very good. Excellent fries.
