Eh... I'd agree on OST and animation in regards to 0083. Story turned into Top Gun (with slightly less homoeroticism) + Love Triangle out of nowhere + free Brain Damage for both protagonists and antagonists after a while. By the end of it, I hated Kou, Nina, and nearly everyone in it. 08th MS Team was better, though I'll hand 83 the awesome space combat scenes that 8MST didn't have as what happens when Gundams and Vietnam have a baby. Also, you're implying that that isn't the case with some of the modern Gundam series. Yeah, SEED was a ripoff of MSG with whinier characters. But 00 featured some beautiful designs, great characters, awesome music, and a grand total of maybe a second and a half of reused animation the entire series.
Froddofromtheshire I think the designs all around are beautiful, from the GP designs, to the GM Cannon variant and the GM Custom. The shoehorned romance put a sour taste in my mouth, and went against things that had already been established earlier on. Gatou himself was honestly one of the best characters in it, Nina was flat and boring, and Kou was basically Amuro with half the ability, and none of the character growth that turned Amuro into a likable character.

I was looking up "The Winner" and stumbled on the a clip of the mock battle. I didn't realize it when I first watched the show, but it does have a Top Gun 80s rock feel. It also gave me the same feeling as "Dare" from Transformers: The Movie of someone young, brash, but full of potential pushing his limits. Maybe its just nostalgia or the powerful quality of the cartoons of the 80s and 90s, but rock theme music from that time just felt so much more heroic. Like epic ballads getting you excited for tales of legendary adventures.
Would be so awesome if they added this among the soundtrack in Gundam Battle Operations 2, totally fits the PVP Scenario since this song played during the training exercise to test the Powered GM.
First our Mighty Wings takes us on the Highway to the Danger Zone, where Men of Destiny strive to become The Winner, and then after a hard fought victory, go Back to Paradise. (I love how song titles from Gundam and Top Gun make a coherent story! That's completely out of the 80's!)

0083はトップガンのオマージュが全体的に散りばめられてるけど、曲の内容だとデンジャーゾーンが危険地域に行こうみたいな歌詞なのに対してこっちは楽園に戻ろうって歌詞になっているの、オマージュなのに対照的で面白いよね。
The paintball training scene with the zaku f2's vs the powered gm may be my favorite piece of mecha animation to date.
The way it opens up the audience to the characters is pretty awesome, and totally Top Gun-ish. What Macross Plus is for Macross, 0083 is for Gundam.
