      Whilst the centre is great, It's not so nice if you head in all directions away from the city centre!
      there you will be greeted with the "real" Leeds in all its filthy, grotty, down at heel glory! lol
      No Friends of ham, starbucks or Harvey Nichols for these locals! lol
      even my old pal who recently returned from Oz to Leeds after 22 years was utterly appalled at the sheer number of free loading foreigners who now seem to occupy huge areas of inner city Leeds,
      it doesn't look right, it doesn't feel right & it isn't right!....what a lousy legacy we are leaving for our young working class kids today?!!

      @@trippy2johno280 free loading foreigners occupying the centre of Leeds? just where did you get that information because it can't have been from actually visiting there. Have you seen the price of housing in central Leeds these days? the only people who can afford to live there are professionals many of who graduated from the cities universities and decided to stay. Leeds has one of the fastest growing city centre populations in the country and they are all professional people. The fact that many of these 'chic' coffee shops are now opening in the Leeds suburbs again proves you actual knowledge of Leeds.

    • @trippy2johno280
      @trippy2johno280 5 лет назад +1

      @@stephenhodgson3506 I think you need to read my comment again Stephen lol
      somehow I don't think there a many yuppies & professionals in Burmantofts, Lincoln Green, Harehills, Wortley, Armley , Gipton, Halton moor, Seacroft & Chapeltown lol
      I said 'AWAY' from the city centre not in it or around it!
      plenty of free loading foreigners & indigenous folk milking the benefit system in Leeds mate,
      And whilst you're quick to point out the cities growing population of mostly non local ' professionals'
      what about the growing number of Poor folk, Don't they count?!
      the inequality & rich/poor divide in leeds is one of the worst in the country so whilst all this gentrification works for the 'Haves' it is of no significance or benefit to 'have nots'
      did you know that child poverty in Leeds is also among the highest in the country?
      Sometimes you need to scratch beneath the surface to see that all is not what it seems.

    You make everywhere you visit look fabulous. Leeds has never looked as good as you portrayed it! I enjoyed seeing all the lovely grub you consumed especially in the Ham pub and also the steak and ale pie. Barley wine was suggested and I'd not had any since my university days. Evidently, it's beer with at least three times the alcoholic content of regular beer and is sold in small bottles and served in wine-like glasses. If it came in regular sized bottles, you'd get paralytic in no time. Another great presentation! Thanks.

      Leeds and Manchester were big but the Industrial Revolution that really kicked the world into shape and the UK was founded in Birmingham the UK's second largest city and it's surrounding cities in Greater Birmingham (West Midlands) like Coventry etc it's also way bigger than Leeds and Manchester. Birmingham is the hub for the old canal industrial revolution as it's in the center of the UK. I'd advise anyone looking to visit Birmingham as it's a lot less ran down and has everything from culture, history and a great city vibe. Other cities worth checking out are Bristol for it's art and culture and nightlife. You'll see that most of the large cities in the UK are quite similar.

      Leeds and Manchester are both way way nicer than Birmingham, less economically stagnant and, in terms of size, there's 300,000 people more in Birmingham than Leeds and 500,000 more than Manchester (city populations) but, in terms of urban or metro areas, there's pretty much a negligible difference. That being said, Birmingham is a nice city if you can get past the accents.

    • @stephenhodgson3506
      @stephenhodgson3506 5 лет назад +1

      @@RingoCANUK you quite clearly haven't been to Leeds in a long, long time and it is anything but run down. There's a reason that companies Like Harvey Nicks exist in Leeds and nor Birmingham. The canal system actually began in earnest in Lancashire NOT the Midlands and the worlds first commercial railway was actually in Leeds and still runs to this day as a tourist attraction. The Industrial Revolution began with advances in the manufacture of textiles in both Lancashire (cotton) and Yorkshire (wool). These industries kicked off both the need for canals and railways. Hence the reason that both these industries were founded in the North of England. The West Midlands did not become part of the Industrial Revolution until the second phase. The Leeds Urban district has a population of some 1.8 million compared to Birmingham's 1.1 million if you include the West Midlands conurbation that rises to 2.4 million (2107 government figures) so Birmingham is not way bigger than Leeds. Leeds is also the UK's largest centre for ISP's and England's second city after London, for both finance and law, both hardly industries that operate in run down areas. In Leeds you can visit numerous art galleries including the Henry Moore gallery. The Northern Armouries museum, stately houses like Temple Newsam, the Cistercian monestry of Kirkstall Abbey and in the northern suburbs Britain s oldest pub. Leeds is also a great kicking off point to explore the rest of Yorkshire.

    I'm glad the two lads survived Leeds, I was born there in 1979 back when all the buildings were still black with soot and nobody had even heard of 'craft beer'..! Tetleys was always the order of the day...and Samuel Smith's. After emigrating to Perth in Western Australia for the last few years...I am going back 'home' in three weeks, for a few months. And you know what...I cant wait!!! Leeds has always been a rough old hole...and as a native I can say that lol...but it does have a charm of its own. I like how complete strangers will just always come and speak to you (whether you want it or not) which I have missed over here. The people of Leeds are certainly down to earth...and although it can be a bit chavvy at times, it's also very inclusive in it's own way. They don't do snobs...as they will often remind you! And yes as the guys said in the video, you may get a feeling of 'Oliver Twist'. Leeds has a working-class culture and does lack the cultural finesse of cities like York and Cambridge...but in its own way it is beautiful....it is also a city which likes to have a good time. A great place to visit is Otley...for a slice of old-style Yorkshire...dont forget the Otley delicacies... hot pork pies, and beef and dripping sandwiches! I have dreamed of these in Australia

    I was born in Leeds back in the day with outside toilets and tin baths. Some how I ended up in the USA but still miss my old town. Find myself surfing the net for the old leeds I knew. When I go back home I always make sure I have a pint in Whitelocks and take my american wife around the market. She loves the vendors shouting out their deals on produce. You can take the lad out of Leeds but you cant take the Leeds out of the lad. :-)

    Nice visit to Kirkgate Market where I started my first real job as a chicken cutter 50 years ago. Late afternoon our front saleswoman would leave and I had fun and replacing her barking to sell the "last" chickens..Kirkgate Market is where I first got lost aged four and found my way home which was maybe seven miles away. It was also where I got my first "Beatle cut" at the barbers by the underground toilets instead of the usual back and sides.

    Interesting to see some of the newer bars in my home town. Seems to be a lot of these springing up. And a shame you missed some of the older classics (but I´ll keep secrets like Whitelocks, the oldest pub in the city, to myself.. it´s a real gem, but too small for lots of tourists ;) ) But a small correction regarding what you said about the Victorian markets and how the enabled people to buy "fruits from around the world".. this increase in product diversity didn´t really occur until well after WW2, after rationing was reduced and transport improved... my own parents, who were born at the beginning of the war, often tell stories of not know what bananas were, and how they were rationed, how fruit such as oranges was considered a luxury item, given at Christmas as gifts. Before that, and certainly in the industrial revolution, what would be available would be mostly home grown local produce. It´s nice to see the city I grew up in presented in a positive, modern way though, so a I think you did a good job here.

    Don't know if you've already looked into this, but if you're going to keep drinking so much craft beer it might be worth joining a loyalty scheme next time you're in the UK. I don't know what the best place to get this from would be, but one of my old teachers has a card and he gets discounted craft beer and free entry to beer festivals - it's all about keeping the craft beer scene alive! Great vlog, loved it! I'm becoming a major fan :)

    Great video about my home city guys! You went to the right place for lunch, friends of ham is one of the best craft beer bars in the north of England! Shame you didn't show the trinity shopping centre. Also the rugby player is called Jamie Jones-Buchanan (think there was a mistake in the subtitles) but overall great video!

    Hey guys,
    I've been a fan for a while now and I've noticed we share a same passion ... Beer!
    but i also noticed you've never made a video in Belgium where the best beers in the worlds are being brewed, I'm a bit biased as it is my homecountry.
    After the recent attacks there has been a sharp decline in tourist visitors ( a big part of our economy) so if people were to make videos, show it is not AT ALL dangerous that could really make a difference.
    And I'm sure if you visit some of the iconic breweries or even just the monestaries that brew the "trapiesten" (= greatest beers in the world) you would have an amazing time.
    Cheers!
