Low Resting Heart Rate

- What is your resting heart rate?
.
My heart rate hovers around 40 but has been dropping slighlty after some good training and even better recovery
.
Your resting heart rate is great thing to measure as it can show how your body is feeling and can even predict illness. If you know what your resting heart rate usually is and it is all of a sudden much higher, you know that something isn't right and it is time to look at your recovery and training load
.
Some people can be concerned with a heart rate lower than the supposed average given by a quick Google search. Normally you should be OK, especially if you are not feeling any bad symptoms. If you are concerned though, I recommend speaking to a qualified professional.

I went to the hospital one time, my heart rate was in the 30's. They thought I was on drugs. Apparently Medical personal do not like hard workouts.
Usual the machines alarms go off well before that
Same thing happened to me. I’m 40 years old and my heart rate was 40. They wanted to put me on Madison. No thank you I’ve worked very hard for this.
I agree
45, mines always been a little lower. I've seen it around 40 before. I just attribute it to being a rower. I'm 36F
38. No issues. Walk 5-10 miles a day every day
According to my watch, training app etc my lowest resting HR is 38 - 41 and my fitness age is 26... which is not too bad for a 64yo male 😎 (forgot to say my max for training is 159 -195 )
Noice one! What do you mean your mac for training is 159-195?
@@CameronBuchan When I train I try to keep my HR between 130 - 140 however I have maxed out at 195 after a particularly hard piece, I did do a 30km row last year in just under 2H20 with an average HR of 125. I do not know if that is good or so-so. I prefer marathons to sprints 🙂
@@MrBradleykeith ah gotcha! I thiught you meant you do all training at max!
@@CameronBuchan I wish 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😎😎
Wow. Your age same with our National Badminton player. Got below 40 bpm at age 64.
Thanks for making this video. Im 43 and have had a low resting heart rate of 35 since I was 20. After 2 visits to the cardiologist they tell me Im fine. Ive always been active and never felt ill. Never dizzy or anything. Although Dr 's me I should be fine I still worry. It's scary watching the monitor hit 34.
I know you wear the chest straps too - I don't trust any wrist reading from watches, they are always horribly off during training. Polar chest strap is more accurate and usually adds 10bpm on avg (and matches to my beat by touch test).
I use the OURA ring also, you should give that a go - I'd love to see your sleep data.
Indeed. I mostly trust wrist based monitors when static, basically sleeping. But not when doing anything active.
I was a beta tester for Oura and I had the same issues as all other optical based sensors unfortunately
43 according to my Garmin, but Garmin's are notoriously known for underestimating your resting heart rate. Lowest Ive seen while asleep is 40
Thanks Roy! I've heard they are notorious for overestimating too!
wow, my garmin says i'm at 48... so it is even lower??
My coros pace 2 watch is the same it's never correct
You should make videos on rowing form and techniques
I have quite a few on the channel
First thing in the morning my RHR is 37-40. Resting during the day usually 50 or so. My max is also 213 (give or take as that was a vo2 max test a few years ago now) so quite a range
Definitely a very wide range! Wow!
I am 58 and trained most of my days. Including ultra marathons. I now row most days doing Concept WOD's or 10k's. My resting HR is 45-50.
35m - 44 rhr. Been training hard for the past 4 months. When I started it was near 55~. My endurance through my workouts is quite strong.
Nice one! The biggest thing is the change compered to yourself. 55-44 is huge. Well done!
It depends on how many beers I got the night before 🍺
Mine's usually around 52-56 at 51 years old. Not bad for an old man!
I'm 77, and it's 40 at the moment, think I must be dead.....
@@bcbeadsworth My seance worked then! 😅
Resting HR is 40 to 50,usually 40s
I am 52😊
@@nomorenews Nice! 👏👏 Mine has been improving with lots of zone 2 training. I'm guessing I'm at about low to mid 40s true resting rate. I've only done "resting" with a Polar H10 laying in bed and usually at 48 with that test right now.
@@bcbeadsworthyou got athlete heart rate
It’s in the 70s when I’m up walking about, 55-60 when at rest
same here!
Same
Mine is similar (33 is the lowest I've seen it). It's fine, apart from the fact that it takes a while to pick up, so when I stand up quickly, I often feel faint.
I’m in my 60s, do vigorous rower workouts twice a week, and eat heart-healthy. My resting heart rate is typically in the mid to high 40s… lowest for me recently was 42bpm.
I'm 73. Last year I was walking home and collapsed on the street. I made it back but they diagnosed me with a heart block at the local OR. They had my heart in the 30's I think. Two days later they decided to test for a stroke and discovered that I had one of those, too! I was helicopters to another hospital and they inserted a pacemaker. Trouble was I had afib. Probably it was a healthy heart except for the rhythm., so when screwed up blood clotted. I've had two ablations and probably removed the source of the problem, but I'm ok with the pacemaker (does nothing unless I dip below 60 and it can be set otherwise). So my great heart wasn't perhaps as healthy as I thought despite a lot of bike riding over the last few decades.
When I was racing at worlds my resting heart rate was 32.
Keep an eye out and if any signs of chest pain or palpitations occur seek medical advice.
For sure!
Between 50-60 although go to gym 3-4 times a week for weight training and at least one hour erg session and one hour water session per week.
The circulatory system is very efficient at transporting oxygen due to the hard demands that you put on it through training. It's amazing how the body adapts.
Indeed!
Resting heart rates consistently under 70 indicate metabolic dysfunction. Its now coming to light that long term high performance endurance athletics are increasingly responsible for metabolic dysfunction and outcomes like parkinsons.
Interesting! Care to share any research you’ve read? I don’t think my resting heart rate has ever been above 70 even before I started training
Mine is in the 40s, the lowest I recorded was in the 42. Docs said its normal.
I am 23 years old and been regularly doing sports and training since I was 12 years old.
So I guess it's supposed to a good thing 🦍
FYI most smart watches underestimate your resting heart rate. 60-100 is based on taking 5-10 minutes rest before getting it taken by a medical professional. Watches like to use the lowest/average when sleeping, or first thing when you wake up. On essence, always going lower than what the medical definition is.
Very aware! They line up to be the same for me
Mine is usually in the mid 40s though when I was training for Yorkshire marathon it did dip down to 39 which triggered a notification from apple health. I do find resting heart hate to be a good proxy for tracking my fitness.
My resting HR is between 35-40 mostly.. I’m a 59 year old male.
Same here i am 40 male . I was worried
Between 40-50. I lift 3 times a week and run 3 times a week for 2.5-3 miles. Looking to incorporate more swimming.
Mine is around 41-45 do alot off running, sometimes i worry but I've heard if you exercise alot it's normal
If you're concerned, best to talk to a doctor
@@CameronBuchan I think the main reason for it was that i did a weight lifting session last night a i think the weights were to big (ego lifting) hence the soreness but i will get myself checked just to make sure.
@@markhill8590 not sure if a weight lifting session should cause pain in your heart or low HR
is this coz you're super fit then ? do you know your RHR before you started rowing ? I appreciate you then have the variable of age but...
When I'm rested and fit it comes down. When I'm not training after maybe a month or so it starts climbing gradually up. I suppose not super accurate but I associate it with losing fitness. Back when I took 3 months out it was low 60s, high 50s
@@CameronBuchan yeah I tend to know I'm getting fitter when my recovery rate after exercise improves over time ( as a simple rule-of-thumb )
My resting heart rate has been at 44 at its lowest, but is generally in the lows 50s, around 52 to 53.
27 years old ex smoker i smoked for 6.5 years quit 4 months ago I’m still using smokeless tobacco that contains nicotine, my resting heart rate is between 52-56, I think it’s genetics.
The number itself can be effected by genetics for sure can also be decreased and increased by factors in our control
@@CameronBuchan I run 2 hours a week but still same as I was smoker
@@V.I1-pe2ki the number itself being changed doesn't necessarily mean fitness is getting better or worse. 2 hours a week aswell may not be "enough" to lower the heart rate, depends on lots of factors!
@@CameronBuchan i quit nicotine pouches for 4 days now my RHR dropped to 47-49 but I feel little bit lightheaded
Mine is 46. Was 68 last year when I was 14. Ive rowed a lot of miles since then😅. Worth it though❤❤
I've seen it at 38, got scared at seeing it that low so rowed a 5k to get it moving faster 😅
It depends how active I’ve been during the day and where I am in my training cycle. Between 44-48 are the usual resting heart rate for me.
That's a very good point! Definitely some variation to consider
I love running slow and exercising. Right after I wake up, my pulse is like 47-8. Sleep is deep and sound, and it takes less hours for my body to rest and recover at night. Also sex is much better with excercise, cause of good blood flow. 34M.
firstly, I train like a beast: I run 4 miles a day & do 13.1+ distances (half-marathons) on the weekends.
I just turned 44, I’m 5’11” and today I weighed 164.4 before my run and 162.2 after (I usually lose about 1.4 lbs of sweat/exhalation so a bit high but I felt strong and it was pretty humid out)
my Apple Watch says, standing here right now it’s 51 bpm’s.
Walking today was 64
* I kinda feel like Will Farrell from Old School: “is this bad… is this bad”
Got my vitals taken today more calm then usual when at the doctor… the nurse stopped what she was doing to urgently ask if my bpm is normally low! I chuckled and said “uhh yeah I get down that’s for sure”
The lowest I've seen is 52, but I'm a pretty big guy. I can still row the 2k in sub-7, but my poor heart has a lot of work to do, even at rest.
What’s the best type of training to lower RHR?
Consistent training will be the best
Mine gets down to the 40's if I exercise that day and the 50's if I don't. I'm pretty overweight and not an athlete like so many commenter's here so this scares me lol
If it’s something that is a concern the can for sure speak to a doctor
I row 6 days a week but resting I’m only mid 60s
I’m in the 40s for resting now sometimes 30s when I sleep trying to make it a goal to have a resting hr somewhere in the 30s
My heart rate is 32 bpm I’m also really fit and I train hard everyday 15,000 steps a day and strength train so I think that’s why
42 Male, i workout 3 -4 days a week for 2hrs, resting HT 40-42 up and walking 50-60, i do no cardio just heavy weights.
Weights ftw
im on the opposite boat, my heartrate is generally higher than normal and my max recorded was 213
60-65 and that’s after jogging 656 miles in 8 months. Before dumping all those miles: 60-65. How can I drop my RHR???
I theory it will come down over time with gains in fitness!
@@CameronBuchan I think with 656 at zone in 8 via zone 2 should be enough to drop RHR.
@@xalian17 it all depends really. Over 8 months that isn't "that much" distance. I know no specifics of what you do for the runs or outside them. Perhaps you have reached the lowest your HR will go!
@@CameronBuchan following that logic, if RHR is a signifier of both cardio fitness and VO2 max potential, why continue sinking 1-2 hrs a day cardio training as it is not causing a cardiovascular adaptation?
@@xalian17 I'm not sure which logic you think I'm using? Just because an individual does some sort of training, doesn't mean they will automatically get fitter if they do other things to hinder their fitness. I think you're giving too much credit to the RHR number. Lower doesn't always equal a fitter individual.
64 years old. Below 40 resting heart rate. Ex world TOP1 Badminton Misbun Sidek
Around 45 when I'm fit and 50 when un(der)trained.
Around 48, but 34 is really impressive even for a rower
I’m 25 years old, I play badminton daily for 1 hour, and my rhr is 49-60. Is it a concern?
103, I hit an average of 126 in 4 hours tonight and peaked at 208
Ok so I've been working out about 5 days a week for 6-7 months and I've lost almost 70 pounds I'm about 324 lbs right now my rhr is was at 61 but I laid down and it went to 53
Wow massive change! Well done!
I’m being down to 32 multiples time while sleeping only when awake I go about 50s and I don’t feel anything wrong
My apple watch gave me 20 low heart rate notifs for my last sleep, all between 36-42 😳
52 running 10ks 4 times a week 💪🏻
Everything above 65 is concerning, so the average might go up to 100… but when it’d higher than 60-65… something’s up or you’re really, really unfit.
Usually around 45 but I don’t give it much thought
When i was 13 my heart rate was at 38 but i did easily 1 hour running on the treadmill was that normal or too low
Man now i feel like i’m not good enough lol. mine is only 63 (14yo male) I train six days a week so idek 🤷🏻♂️
It should lower as you age! Don't worry
You'll get there, lad.
54-56, I'm 56yrs old. It's 42-43 when I'm sleeping.
When im on the stationary bike after a big workout it hovers around 40 ish even 39 and jumps back up to 65 weird
62 ish depending on the day
Around 48bpm
I think I’m similar to you 40 is the norm when resting lowest I’ve seen is 36 but I get 38 5-10 times a month. With that said I don’t train I’m 34 years old and around 275 lbs. I go for 30 minute walks 2-3 times a week. I’m a hard worker at work but I think my low hart rate is genetic. At least I hope so.
How many years did you have this? And what age are you now?
@@dendenc2046 last few years. Only started paying attention after I got my first Apple Watch.
If you don’t feel ill it’s good
I'm 66 running and indoor rowing for recreational fitness. RHR of 52. Not bad for my age. Not in your league 👍🙂
40 to 45, and I'm 68 years old
Indurin, the cyclist, had a resting HR of 28.
Mines between 90bpm and 100bpm when resting. Highest it's ever been was 230, lowest was around 68.
230? Mine doesn't go above 180 during a run.
Were you working out when it was 230?
@@Maratha382 I was skiing and lost the group I was with, leading to a pretty bad panic attack. I think the combination of those two events made my heart rate skyrocket.
38 as well 💪🏼🤙🏼
Snap!
41 and goes down to 36 when sleeping
53, but i think i’ve gotten it into the high 40s sometimes
Have you had a Dr check you out. That seems way too low.
Indeed I have. Its low vs avg yes but considering my size and fitness it makes sense. Definitely if someone has concerns they should visit a professional if they haven't already!
Mine is always high even had a doc think i lay hav tachycardia. My resting heart rate is usually around 100-110
People who are overweight have higher resting heart rates because their hearts have to over work themselves just get blood pass all the fat masses to profuse other organs. That or either you hypovolemic (low blood volume or water due to dehydration) this causes your heart rate to be higher to restore fluid/blood volume in your body. If not that, then you must be skinny with a high metabolism, not that? Then you must take too much caffeine. If not that, then you def got a heart electricity issue. Probably you should check your electrolyte levels. If they are fine then you just unhealthy as heck and should lower your consumption of saturated fats and high cholesterol food
When I sleep it drops to 38 but anything from 38 to 48
Have you done arsonist work 😎💜
50 for me according to my garmin fenix
