I think it's absolutely amazing that Jonathan was a character who showed up once in a while and had one or two lines. Then he started getting 3 lines. And then they suddenly used him in a major way in this episode.
Jonathan was a very small part at first, but the guy is actually a very talented writer... and a pretty good actor.

I think this is the perfect episode to show to somebody who's never seen an episode of Buffy before. It's beautifully self contained and it has everything; the comedy, the drama, a complete story, a twist... Plus Buffy's mind-reading offers a wonderful characterization for everyone, which is very rare for a show where the characters are being carefully developed over a long period of time.

Everyone mentions Columbine in association with this episode. Sadly, most are unaware that Jonathan in the clocktower with a rifle directly references the 1966 shooting on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Wherein, the gunman shot from the clocktower with a rifle. So actually this episode connects to 2 real world tragedies.

    • @Nexusofgeek

true but the reason Columbine is mentioned is because that tragedy in 1999 preempted the show's airing, so it aired out of sequence and we didn't get to see it until months later

In regards to the scoped rifle, while it is widely known that the United States has an excess of guns per household, not every household has one, and further not everyone owns a handgun. That rifle may be the only one Jonathan has access to. It's probably his mom's or dad's or another family member's hunting rifle.

MattyIce95 Sure but the USA is still a country that actually has more privately owned guns than it has inhabitants. Yep, that's right. There's more than 330 million privately owned guns in the USA.
Besides - what Jonathan has in this episode is not a hunting rifle. It's a sniper rifle. Now tell me - for whatever reason does the USA allow private people to own military grade weapons? And not only sniper rifles, but also assault rifles and submachine guns which have rapid fire modes? It's utter madness.
Speaking about the usual excuse of the NRA maniacs - that the founding fathers implemented the 2nd amendment - it should be mentioned that this is a gross misrepresentation of the actual 2nd amendment. First of all the original text refers to weapons of the 18th century (aka muskets), not modern da fire arms. And secondly it specifically refers to regulated militia as the reason for people to own weapons.
The historical context for this is that the newly founded USA had no standing regular professional army and therefore was relying on state run militias for defence. They feared that the British Empire would start another invasion sooner or later (which was indeed the plan of the British; it failed to materialize in the expected way because of the French revolution and the Napoleonic wars). And because of the lack of a professional military the militias where their first and last line of defense.
This has literally nothing to do with the modern day situation. The need for state run militias does no longer exist because the USA have a massive professional military force now, and in addition to that the national guard. The whole purpose of the 2nd amendment doesn't exist anymore, however the NRA supporters still act as if the political situation of the late 18th century was still the situation today.
When the context changes stuff like the 2nd amendment have to be adjusted (just like the Electoral College system by the way which also was suited to fit the technological and political situation of the late 18th century and not modern day politics and availability of information). However the USA never adjusted their laws.

    • @1986bab
      @1986bab 3 года назад +2

@@HH-hd7nd That was quite the rant and I agree the number of privately owned guns here in the states is ridiculous. As for the gun Jono has...there is a very good chance it belongs to a relative. His father or an uncle who didn't secure the gun, thinking Jonathan was old enough not to mess with it. They may even have the handguns locked up because it never occurred them that Jono would go messing with a sniper rifle.

Ya yet America still has way to many guns it’s actually world famous for random shootings, sorry but it’s true, idk how the haven’t banned guns, yes you have the second “amendment” in the USA but, 1 it was made when there where only muskets and 2 it is an amendment to begin with, the USA need less guns and more Dictionaries, an amendment is something that was changed already. Amendment definition is “ a minor CHANGE or addition designed to improve a text, piece of legislation”,

Minor corrections: the Columbine Massacre occurred exactly one week prior to when this episode was originally scheduled. It was supposed to be the first new episode back after a month of reruns ("Enemies" had aired in mid-March 1999) and IIRC a preview for it still aired the actual night of Columbine, at the end of that night's rerun. It was a couple of days later when the decision was officially made to delay the episode.
And the episode was only delayed by 7 months. It eventually aired two weeks before the start of Season 4.

Your thoughts at the end are very correct. I never thought about it in that way how Johnathan actually wasn´t stopped from killing himself and Buffy's speech doesn't even completely relates to what was going on with him. It was still a beautiful episode funny, sad and smart at the end from his perspective what Buffy said was: "Are you sad'?... well a lot of people are sad". Maybe he felt compelled to stop by seeing that someone was actually paying attention to him and even when she thought that he was going to do something really bad she still felt compassion for him.

While it could be considered having 2 different thoughts, most everyone does that at some point. Trying to be supportive when you actually have doubts. Pretending not to be jealous, etc.

Please don't tell me it doesn't actually take mind-reading for Buffy to realize boys are "seriously disturbed." 😁

Jonathan's choice in a sniper rifle was definitely a deliberate choice in his mental state of thinking. Jonathan is a character who wanted a taste of power because he felt so small and insignificant. Guns are a means for some who may see themselves as weak to finally hold power. But what sort of power did Jonathan crave, specifically? There are and will be many characters in BUFFY who seek and also gain the power they seek power and then abuse it. It seems that the power he craved was the power to be noticed and remembered.
His twisted thinking was that if he went through with the deed, the students would somehow realize that he had the opportunity to kill any one of them due to the scoped rifle and high ground visibility but he only shot himself, reasoning to himself that it make him memorable but technically not a monster. He wanted to show that he could inflict damage upon anyone and instead he would chose not to.

Perfect episode for those who have never seen the series before; Buffy's new powers allow for an overview of the personalities of all characters. Oz with his fantascentific ruminations, Cordelia sincere to the extreme, while Xander ..... well who knew him already imagined what he thought (and what about Wesley? XD).
We really laugh a lot (TWICE, JOYCE ?!) but the space for drama and suspense is not lacking, both for the fate of Buffy and for the imminent massacre looming over the high school, an American classic unfortunately.
Buffy's speech was truly perfect and does not lose its depth and sensitivity even after you discover the real intentions of Jonathan, a character who is conquering more and more spaces in the series, who knows if he will be able to enter the Scoobies?
Really perfect final plot twist, hilarious Xander and the cook LOL
