I've no comment about the Derby hopefuls, at least not yet, but am so glad to have Jay Nehf's input because, though I live in Reno the only gambling I intend to do is at Triple Crown time. Nevertheless, I have an endearing tale to tell of a 30 yr. old thoroughbred I had the pleasure of meeting at Bartley Ranch Park here in my adopted little city. His owner told me that he's in great shape at 30 and she still barrel races him. "Wow, really," I said. "I always think of quarter horses are barrel racers." "I know," she said, "but you wouldn't believe how good he is at it and he's sixteen hands. You know, he truly was a race horse who still loves to run. I exercise him on that track over there." (It's just like a race track.) "And he loves to run so much it's hard to rein him in sometimes." I walked away grinning.
Roaster is my Kentucky Derby pick. He was also my pick for the SA Derby as well. He can go the distance no questions asked. Baffert was thinking Roadster was still going to be put in the Belmont of conditions were right. My only concern is the break. Mike is really going to have to hustle him to get a good spot, but I wouldn’t ask for any other rider. The way Mike checked Roadster really hard at the start of the final turn in the SA derby freaked my out when I first saw it but he knew exactly what he was doing. Improbable is my only worry against Roaster...
Maximum Security I think is a big threat. Any horse that runs the fastest figures without being challenged, is a threat. Especially because it's against Grade 1 competition. I agree though, I'll have to see if Improbable can improve on his speed figures this weekend in Arkansas. He'll need to improve 3-5 points for me to consider him a win contender on my tickets. Game Winner hasn't gotten any faster since he was two, not good, and not a winning derby type. Derby winners are improving each race leading up to and sitting on their biggest. It will be Roadster's 3rd off a layoff. Maximum Security has run 5 beyer points higher than the field so far without being challenged, I don't suggest leaving him out of top stop in any bet. James Newberry Maximum Security would be one of my top derby picks... BUT, his trainer is a cheater... he can’t win anywhere else except Gulfstream and other “run down” tracks. That tells me he can’t get away from using drugs, which he’s known for, at the top tracks like Churchill. Now I’d hate to assume Maximum Security is drugged... but I am willing to take that into account which a lot of other bettors are on the same page with this. Everyone deep in racing knows he can’t win a top race like the derby without getting caught with something. I’m going to trust that. But overall I’d agree with what you said👍🏼
My father has owned race horses since before I was born. I'm as deep as they come into this game. I've been on the other end to many times to count. Betting horses that lost because of a cheater. If he cheats, and gets caught after the race, I still go to the window and get my money.
In case you didn't hear. Maxium Security came home in the Florida derby faster than any horse ever in a Kentucky derby prep race since they started recording fractions. Impressive

Neither one seems to have much gate speed, or don't break that fast, and in a 20 horse field, that could be trouble. As of now, I'm leaning on Omaha Beach, but we'll see how the Ark. Derby plays out. Plus I’m not that convinced of Joel rosario in the saddle for game winner mike smith looks more suitable for game winner smith it’s a master mind on controlling the horse gas tank on the track

Jay C. Nehf, I have to agree with you. Omaha Beach seems to be the one to watch. He has the pedigree, he haste stride length, and if ridden smartly..should crosswise line at Churchill Downstairs on May 4th.
Mr Nehf, why in USA horse racing programs do not report the weight of the horse? I think that is important for people who bet on horses, in my country (Panama) in every race they inform the weight.
Well done Jay. A couple of thoughts: 1) As you mentioned, having Mike Smith in the irons and Bob Baffert training, is critical to Derby success. Roadster is likely to be the ML favorite in The Derby and it is deserved. Game Winner will also be well backed. 2) The East Coast horses have been beating each other up. No real standouts and, as in recent years, I think they are just a cut below the best. 3) Baffert has shown that a lightly raced horse going into the Derby is a good pattern. Roadster fits the bill. 4) While Game Winner is probably a "better looking" horse, Roadster obviously has lots of quality and reminds me of Real Quiet in looks. KInd of a rough, throwback type horse. I like that. 5) Reportedly, prior to his surgery, Baffert thought Roadster was the best of his 3 year-olds. 6) I think your emphasis on stride length is somewhat overblown. While stride length is a factor, I believe turnover rate is more important. The best example of this is the great Winx. Average size, average conformation, average stride length but an amazing turnover rate. Probably as fast or faster than any horse I've ever seen. Watch her coming down the stretch. Just incredible and that is a big key to her greatness. Roadster came home like a real race horse. Given a decent trip, he's the one to beat. Longshot (if he makes the field) is Anothertwistofate. A son of Scat Daddy which, alone, gives him credentials enough to win it.
Your picks are always how I would judge a horse. However roadster if rested and worked lightly I think has a chance . If he is a cool headed horse confident and on his toes he has a real chance. I appreciate the way you train your horses and are careful with them. Being from del mar and lived near bay meadows when it was open I have a great appreciation for fair play and care of these honest beautiful creatures. Seeing the stories of the 22 or so killed horses makes my gut twist and think twice about racing. When I bring myself to think how the horses were really treated and feed and worked. No weird chemicals no short cuts. You either got it or you dont. If you ever have another gelding you retire consider the retired racehorse program. Or for a real mellow retirement consider a retired trainer like moi. I've been riding horses since I was a I'm a 66 model so you can guess I've got saddles and experience under my belt.
You have to break down Tacitus. Got his points banked and will be fully energized. Even though he is tops in points, he did it so quietly. The plus is he won with dirt in his face. You'll love his big hind too. :)
The TMZ horse!! I like roadster and have a very nice future bet on him but I'm with you Jay. War front will produce this years derby winner. I like wow and Omaha beach. The distance pedagree is there and both are front running types. Maybe Mike will stay loyal to BB, but he knows Omaha beach is the better horse.

The betting site Bovada didn't shut down the betting before this past weekends races. I was able to bet the max $250 on Roadster to win the Kentucky Derby at +2000. That's a $5,000 payout if the favorite wins for 7th year in a row. That's a flaw in the system I plan on using every year leading up to the Kentucky Derby. I also bet Maximum Security at odds of +1200. I believe that Maximum Security could be a freak. He keeps getting faster every race and also has yet to be challenged in the lane. Besides the +1200 I have him keyed over the field in $14 worth of exacta's. I'm pretty confident in these two horses. Even if i didn't get these amazing prices on these horses I'm not sure if i need to put any other horses on top in my tri's or supers. Obviously my opinion, good luck to all

I think Roadster is better than Omaha Beach.....Roadster beat Game Winner a lot more convincingly than Omaha Beach did....in addition, Roadster beat Nolo Contesto twice who has beaten Omaha Beach....Roadster also has Baffert and Mike Smith (I am assuming Mike Smith chooses him) in his corner....Roadster will also be fresher in the Derby (4 races run) than Omaha Beach (6 races run)...... I also think Roadster has always been Baffert's (and Smith's) favorite horse for the Derby this year and that has to count for something......

Interesting that Roadster, with breathing problems, has Red Ransom, with breathing problem, in pedigree. Omaha Beach? Mandella tends to be one of those soft trainers (see OnThe Muscle) whois always thinking his horses are tiredand need rest. Will be interesting if he follows script with OB. Baffert is a tough trainer with frequent appropriate breezes (Roadster did every 5 days--I've done 6F every 4 days or 4-5f every three days--gets a tough conditioned horse) and hence his success against the traditional TB trainer.

I missed the damn Pick 5 last year by one damn horse. Also missed the Superfecta by one horse. But it happens. Was fun anyhow.

Hmm, I didn't think the issue was about stride length and everything to do with Game Winner slowing sharply when Instagrand and No lo contesto ran out of gas before reaching the stretch, forcing Game Winner to lose his momentum. In other words Roadster didn't speed up, the leaders slowed. Like you said, Roadster is not distance runner. And admit it Jay, you have a big old horse crush on Game Winner and are refusing to admit the 2 year old champ hasn't won as a 3 year old in two starts and asking him to win in his 3rd at the KD may be expecting too much.

@@t.d6379 This is a TOUGH field. Jockey's can damn sure make a difference with a good head on their shoulders but there are a couple horses that... well, I think could beat Omaha. And I think one is going off at damn good money. Its tough to bet on a sure thing sometimes as it does not pay shit. Lol. A Long shot or two have to be in there or you have to bet a ton. I missed the damn Pick 5 last year by one damn horse. Also missed the Superfecta by one horse. But it happens. Was fun anyhow.

That was the first thing I noticed was ROADSTER'S pedigree didn't scream 10f. On Both Sides. If I am Mike Smith I would stick with OMAHA BEACH

I think Baffert made a mistake choosing Joel Rosario for game winner ! He is not in control of game winner game winner controls him ! Game winner would be so much better horse with mike smith on the saddle !he is a master mind on keeping the horse gas tank half full on the finish line!
Hmm, I didn't think the issue was about stride length and everything to do with Game Winner slowing sharply when Instagrand and No lo contesto ran out of gas before reaching the stretch, forcing Game Winner to lose his momentum. In other words Roadster didn't speed up, the leaders slowed. Like you said, Roadster is not distance runner. And admit it Jay, you have a big old horse crush on Game Winner and are refusing to admit the 2 year old champ hasn't won as a 3 year old in two starts and asking him to win in his 3rd at the KD may be expecting too much.
