- Wandering around Dublin I came across this busker, who had built a contraption to make it easier to pluck the guitar strings after he contracted arthritis. I asked him if there was somewhere you could buy the gadget. He said, based on the number of Japanese tourists who took close up photos, it's probably available on eBay by now.

Wow amazing footage, i remember Dublin like this growing up, amazing place with real character. Its unfortunately a total kip now and doesn't remotely resemble this amazing footage anymore.

Aye the good old days. The place felt distinctly Irish and as an Englishman working there it really was the land of opportunity. The people were amazing, welcoming and friendly...i truly loved dear dirty Dublin and the surrounding counties.
Perfect selection of shots and very well edited. For me, 'peak' Dublin was around 1995. The economy was just taking off, unemployment was low, wages were rising, lots of new places were opening up in the centre for younger people to socialise. People had money in their pockets and new shops and shopping centres were opening up. By 2000 (the year of this video), the pressure was already building. Traffic had gotten really, really bad, house building was beginning to fall behind demand, and so house prices were already climbing to their February 2007 peak ( they would subsequently by 55%, and it's only now in 2024 - 17 years later - that they are at that level again ). I haven't lived in Dublin in 20 years, but watching this I can remember a lot of the shops as being new in the mid to late 1990's. They are mostly long gone now as the chain stores have replaced them ( and made every European shopping street look pretty much the same : thank you Zara, H&M, Primark, Mango et al ). I do remember that busker, and tipped him many times. When I go back to Dublin now all its problems are worn on its sleave : still no effective public transport ( demonstrating just how small and closed minded the ineffective politicians are there ), still terrible traffic ( did you notice the large trucks going righ through the centre, something you don't see in other European cities ). homelessness much more in evidence, and the city looks like a soleless kip. It used to be a kip with character. All the best ! Up the Dubs !
I'm from wexford,I used to go to Dublin a lot around that time and I used to love it there now I just couldn't be bothered
Dame St has changed for the worst, we could sit outside the bank on a sunny day have a coffee. People would meet there as it was the meeting place for all kinds of reasons. Now another office block has risen up in the meeting place. Greed as usual setting the pace. The Dublin soul is nearly gone and in its place a black hole appears. 😱😢

It would be great if they pedestrianise it..personally I think Dublin has improved as a city..apart from the housing crisis and the junkies on oconnell street..
I was outside the bank yesterday and there was loads of people meeting up and hanging out at it, on the steps and the seats. It was as close to its original vibe as I've seen it in years.

I know that guy. I walked around Dublin and had a coffee with him. I can't remember his name though. He had worked in a circus for awhile in his youth.
That was the year Trevor Deeley disappeared December 2000.In Baggot Street where the canal flows gently by in Kavanagh country. Still nobody knows how somebody could vanish like that in the centre of city. So sad. No time for fighting and fussing, as the Beatles song says. Carpe diem. Time makes ghosts of us all 🇮🇪☘🇬🇧
Me and a freind visited Dublin back in September 1999, coincidentally and unbeknown we went on the weekend of the all ireland football finals, the people and atmosphere was something else, absolutely love Dublin!

0:50 I remember hearing years ago that "phoenix perk" was almost sued by the producers of Friends because the font style they used was the same as the coffee house "central perk",never found out if it was true tho,still phoenix perk didn't last long.

i was in dublin at that year and saw that man a couple of times in grafton st , i often think about him as i remembered him played hotel california with that artifact in his ovation guitar top hole , and now, 17 years later....i can see him again! thanks for post this! thanks

Oh sorry man,my bad. I didnt know I caused any harm to your city.Im an immigrant myself living in Dublin since I was 18. Since I was a small kid I had an unexplained love for Ireland.I had a love for this country bigger than my own country.I pay taxes,work hard,learnt the language,,plant flowers in the local community,clean up the beach, take care of my neighbours and lived a life driven by the values of ireland. I educated myself on the culture and history.
I dont care for your hatred towards immigrants. I am irish at heart even though I wasnt born on this soil,I respect it more than some of the irish people who disrespect their own country, ignore their elderly,dont work,dont bother to learn their own culture or language. Being Irish is something that is either in your heart or not. Not on a birth cert paper. I learnt that from the eastwall community❤️
