As much as I like the styling of the EV6 (especially the exterior), I'd probably go with the Ioniq 5. I don't mind sporty handling, but these old arthritic bones of mine don't like being beaten up while driving on our state's terrible roads. Also, the larger rear cargo area and the sliding center console are other features of the Ioniq 5 that I like. They really need to improve those Ioniq 5 color choices though--not everyone likes silver/grey/white/black.
Interesting note about availability--checking nationwide via AutoTrader, there are already over 50 EV6s en route to dealers, but apparently will be available in all 50 states. The Ioniq 5 now shows over 1,150 available from dealers nationwide, but only in a handful of selected states.
Totally agree on needing screens/haptic touch panels to control cars these days. Cars have had buttons, knobs, switches and levers since the Model T and can be operated solely on muscle memory and physical feedback, never having to take our eyes off the road. That's why I dislike the Ford EVs and especially those repulsive t*slas that slap a nice big distracting tablet on the dashboard. We already have distracted driving laws for using phones while driving; why that doesn't apply to these in-car tablets just boggles my mind.
I test drove both cars and there was a huge difference. I found the EV6 ride quality to be bordering on punishing and the tradeoff to make it sportier didn't seem to be worth it. I didn't notice handling that much better than the Ionic 5. I thought the Hyundai was fantastic -- I'm just hoping for more range, better colors and more realistic prices. I may be waiting a while LOL..
@@goldvideo Hey, cool that you drove both! You've kind of confirmed my own thoughts on the two models, and I think my "sporty" days are in the past. I do slightly prefer the styling of the EV6 but the Ioniq 5 certainly looks good also. I may have to take a weekend trip to go test drive one--we have none in our state.

Like most EV owners, I charge up overnight when demand for electricity is least. It is very rare that I ever need to charge during the day. Maybe five times a year when I take a road trip. The overreaction to the grid not being able to handle EV’s is not as big of a problem as many think. Even electricity generated by public utility solar farms can store that electricity generated during the day for use at night. Technology is changing fast, and for the better… EV tech anyway.
When people claim that we can't adopt EVs because the grid is not strong enough, is like saying they'll start jogging when they are strong enough to run a marathon. It doesn't work that way. Adoption of EVs will increase demand an stress the grid, which will provide the incentive to utilities to expand capacity. Unless the grid is stressed, there is absolutely no incentive to expand.
The power companies have already taken this into their future plans. Some utilities are even giving discounts if you sign up your electric car on their plan.
Personally, I'm digging that 2 spoke steering wheel. Never cared much for 3. My current car is 4
Battery is 77.4kWh rather than 111kWh. I'm curious where you got that number.
Thanks for the review, this and the Ionic 5 are the only two EV's I would actually consider purchasing.
I tried both ioniq 5 and ev6 and decided to go for ioniq 5 because of much more room inside, higher seats and overall driving confort. Also disruptive look of ioniq 5 makes it UNIQUE, and I hate doing the same as others 😀

I do prefer the Hyundai's looks but my brother in law has just bought one of these and I have to say that it is an extremely nice and capable vehicle. Personally I 'm still too much of a V8 man to switch over yet though!!!! 😂😂
In 2018, all the plug-in vehicles in the US used 2.85 TWh of electricity from the grid. That's less than the total annual electricity production just from the province of Nova Scotia.
That's a teeny tiny province with not even a million people in it. I like using that specific province as an example specifically because it's a small province, and it has just under 3 GW of installed gird capacity from all sources combined, which I think helps to put into perspective how little power is currently being drawn from the grid for all plug-in vehicles currently. I know, your point was about how the grid will handle the demand moving forward. I'd assume with the drop off in demand for gasoline, diesel, and other distillates of oil, electricity capacity will be freed up to make up the differece.
Looking forward to the discussion with the grid experts. The weird piped in noise is just that, a weird piped in noise. So much nicer to hear music, conversation or nothing.
Thank You Finally somebody who points out the power grid not being able to handle everyone having an electric car. This is something I have been telling people for months but they just don't think about that. Thank you for pointing that out.

If everyone was driving an EV, it would create a strain on the grid, but that's years off and time for improvement. I drive an EV and charge at home. I drive about 600 miles a month and it increases my total electric use by only 7 or 8% a month.
1:45 I thought the biggest battery available was a 77kwh? Where are you getting that 111 kwh number from?
I hope Kia doesn't listen to his nitpicks on audio/climate control or pricing.

I own this car and I ASSURE you, after you pick it up you will NEVER see 310 RANGE on your odometer EVER AGAIN ....I now start out at 280 & a 55mile trip to New York city at 80 mph takes an extra 30 miles of range. Granted my headlights, climate control and radio are on but keep it real.... I love the car BTW
Where'd those 0-60 numbers come from? Kia's website states 4.6 seconds. 5.1 is what the Hyundai ioniq is capable of which is tuned more conservative.
Haptic touch down low on a console is extremely dangerous. Just trying to change the temps on my Lincoln MKS is maddening. Especially where the panel is completely flat, you can't even feel your way around.
Much better than tesla which has no “Normal” mode. Only “can’t even merge” and “cheetah”
I agree on the pricing being a bit high even though both the Ioniq and EV6 are a very high value proposition compared to Tesla and the premium brands. I have a theory that may save the actual showroom numbers though, the Hyundai group may be planning to take a page out of the VW group book (Porsche/Audi) and offer a free year of charging support. If they did that these vehicles would fly out of dealerships as soon as they were unloaded.

The frunk shown at 3.04 is the AWD model and is smaller than the RWD due to the front motor underneath. The RWD frunk is a more useful size.

Futuristic look of the EV6 is awesome...and the Futuristic/Retro look of the Ionic 5 is so unique. A fan of both. Hopefully the Genesis GV70 EV will be a knockout too..

What you saw was the RWD. They are the same whether it be RWD or AWD. Double checked with Kia.
Seem some criticism of Hyundai-Kia software for route planning being not good.
In 2 motor trims does the Kia like the Hyundai turn off the front motor in Eco mode?
Don't they have a faster GT version coming out? Not GT Line, GT. Agree regarding haptic being distracting. Also, I believe if CarPlay or Android is engaged, the KIA voice system is disengaged.

One way to curb inflation is taking the gas companies out of the equation. Easy to do, since most only need local range. If not local (like heading to the race track) a smart tow-adapter (that replaces spare tire) would be cool, especially if it had ability to brake for both cars when it senses brake-light and increases regen. Imagine paying track fee for only 1 car, but having two, since the towing car is a BRZ.
RWD and small frunk? Never seen that before. There should be space for the big frunk... strange. In Europe it is 24 liters and 52 liters respectively.
Coasting is better energy use at highway speeds.
I agree. Volume controls should ALWAYS be a dial with push to turn off/mute. Touch screens low in the dash or center console suck. They look cool but people take their eyes off the road to push something they use to be able to find by touch alone because it was tactitle.
Honestly what would help is somewhere mid dash people could plug in a button bar. Program and label them anyway you want and there ya go. They have smooth screens and you have buttons.

This is like the 4th north American review that I've seen that whenever they mention the small frunk space they neglect to mention the much larger frunk space in the rear wheel drive versions. I'm beginning to think either they don't know that or were told not to mention it. 🤔

@@lepidoptera9337 I'm aware, but if he's showing the rear wheel drive car the frunk space shown is not the one that's actually on the rear wheel drive. If the test drive vehicle they gave him has that frunk space then he should clarify that the same way he clarified the difference in speed and range between the 2.

Waiting for my Ioniq 5 Ultimate reserved it 6 weeks ago.
Prices will come down as batteries get cheaper. For now, I would point out that even with a higher sticker price, the overall cost of ownership for a BEV is far lower than for an ICE car. Not only is electricity far cheaper than gasoline, there are great savings in maintenance. There are no oil changes, no tuneups, no coolant, no belts, no fuel filters or air filters to change, and with regenerative braking, you’ll probably never need to replace your brake pads.
That's the hope but still VERY far off from that.
@@MotoManTV I've been driving only BEVs for ten years. I used to spend $500 per month on gas. Now, I spend an extra $20 per month on electricity. I am often able to charge for free. I used to change my oil and oil filter every two months. That's about $600/year. I spent money replacing belts, flushing the cooling system, buying antifreeze, and so on. Now, all of those expenses are gone. When I put my winter tires on my five year-old Bolt in October, the tire shop guy shook his head, and marveled "We checked you brake pads, and they haven't really worn at all since they were new." That's right. I hardly ever touch my friction brakes. I own a Leaf and a Bolt; I'm saving up for a Tesla.
EVs are far cheaper to own NOW than ICE cars. The "fuel" is about 1/10 the cost, at least in my part of the country, where gas is expensive, and electricity is cheap. The cost of maintenance is far lower, too. Tires, wiper blades, and wiper fluid is about all I have to buy these days.
Get your hands on a Taycan GTS, please.

The EV6 does not get 310 miles. I’ve had for for 3 weeks. It’s a lie.
Smae charge speed as EQS with a much smaller battery.
So Ze German with a 50% larger Korean battery would charge at 300 kW, not 200 kW. I like EQS, but the thought that the battery give me SO LESS than the Koreans...doesn't sit too well.

Best point in the whole video, you saved for the end. The power grid and access to charging is a HUGE issue for EVs. There are 'remote' communities in Canada that aren't even on a grid. They get diesel trucked in over ice roads to power generators for electricity. EVs won't fly there. I'm actively looking at EVs to replace our SUV for commuting. We do about 120 miles a day. But we also do it all winter, with warm days being in the -20s and morning drives near or below -40. This is not where EV range excels. And some will say, well, just top up the batteries while you're at work. Fantastic idea! But you have to have power in your parking lot for that. Okay, they say, top up at a fast charger before heading home. Also a fantastic idea - but the nearest ones are about 2 miles from my house ... almost 60 miles away. (And yes, I'm intentionally not using km here, for the benefit of US viewers.)
Outside of major centers, access to charging is still a huge problem. It's getting better, but still not as universal as the common gas station. But infrastructure is improving, access to fast charging is improving, and range/battery tech is improving too. Ultimately though, it's going to come down to what powers those chargers. Nuclear is technically the best solution, but also very problematic in its own ways until fusion gets figured out. Clean/renewables like solar and wind aren't stable enough, and storage becomes an issue too. Hydro is consistent, but there are limits in geography at play. That brings you back to fuel-burning generation. Coal/natural gas contribute to the problems eliminating ICE vehicles is supposed to solve. There is biomass burning generation, but it has its own set of issues. I'm all for electrification of vehicles ... but the switch brings its own set of new problems, and the big one, as you said, is the power grid. It's outdated and most likely unsuited for the amounts of power an EV-first world will require.
Your comment mentions a ton of problems. You bring up remote communities in Canada. That's like 2 people. Not a "HUGE" problem. There are challenges yes, but we will solve them. Humans are creative and adaptable and ultimately we have no choice but to move towards greener technology.

I am concerned and intrigued about the future of electric vehicles for the point you’d made. Where will the electricity come from to power these millions of vehicles? Several manufacturers want to fossilize the combustion engine leaving no option but to go EV. This is a problem I don’t think has been properly addressed.They are only seemingly concerned with putting more EV’s on the road with no regard for the source of the power.
I'll comment more when George does a video on this topic, but one fear I have is that all this added demand will require more infrastructure that needs to be paid for, and our electricity prices will skyrocket as a result. Our utilities (DTE Energy or Consumers Power) can barely afford to maintain the ancient power grid we have now. How do they plan on adding this capacity? The power lines behind our house now are over 80 years old. Are all the neighborhoods going to have to get new mains run through? So many questions...
An EV uses about as much electricity as can be supplied with solar panels on a single vehicle garage. It's a trivial amount of additional electrical generation with renewables.

Well the base model is about 38k (without tax rebate)...the one after that is 47k again without the rebate so with the rebate it's closer to 40k depending where you live...the only one estimated to be above 50k is the GT which isn't due until late summer or Fall.
Show us how the car drives and handles in real City traffic and on real City highways 😠

Mate, the reason we have shows like this AND that people watch them is because we drive a wide range of vehicles and understand what works, what doesn't, and especially what's effective for drivers. To me, it sounds like you're looking for a brochure and that's something you can easily find at the manufacturer's web site.

Your nagging about digital buttons makes a lot of sense. Let's brace for a significant increase of "eyes-off-the-road" type of accidents, such as the one which, unfortunately, happened to you.
The question and "concern" about grid support is about as dumb as asking "what about her emails?"

So why did tesla use its own tesla plug in america 🇺🇸 and not allow other EV s to use his charging hubs. Euro teslas where built right and have CCS . Damage is already done reason everyone hates tesla. Euros and american EV drivers all hate teslas and will never buy one. We would way rather have the Porsche EV that is quality and fast any day over a ugly tesla that looks like a wannabe mercedes fast but NO quality

Once again this is not vehicle designed as an EV from the ground up. The frunk is really an engine compartment and the level of storage there is insulting. On the inside the vehicle is a dinosaur. There are too many buttons everywhere which means the software in the vehicle sucks. It’s slow which is embarrassing from an EV perspective. Last, the focus on fast DC charging is misplaced. People should charge at home and have enough energy in the battery to where charging every day is not required. I charge my EV once a week to once every 10 days as I don’t drive a lot. Public charging should only be used when travel very long distances. Using public charging stations on a regular bases will damage the battery. And if this vehicle uses a pouch battery I would be worried about the vehicle catching 🔥 as it ages. We already have one legacy automaker who has this problem with a certain vehicle.
For that high amount of money, no thank you!

Why an electric car should be expensive? It is a battery connected to an electric motor and both placed in a metal box.

Why does it have to be so many redundant software controls in a car? Answer: the car manufacturers do it intentionally to artificially force the prices up!
Why not the simple minimum mechanical mini and microswitches used on the latest $20 000 gas cars? What's wrong with them?

You don't need more screens, controls, and buttons than a regular cheap gas car, in order to keep your eyes planted on the road and drive as safe as possible.
You don't need software to upgrade anything to anything and two electric motors to have insane power that you'll never use.
A single 150KW front electric motor in a relatively light electric car at a decent exterior size, with minimum 300 miles range, with good boot volume behind the back seats, and with nonexpensive tires is all you need.
A simple electric car that fulfill its purpose and a price of up to maximum $30 000 US.
Something like BYD E6, Chevy Bolt EUV ( but with a bigger boot-trunk volume behind the back seats and a bit lower price ) is what a regular blue collar worker needs.
The rest of the electric cars built with bells and whistles and expensive, like these korean makes, are for rich people who don't have what to do better with their money. They can afford to throw their money away for nothing.
A car is for transportation, not for entertainment!
What are you gonna "say" when you'll be killed by one of these korean electric cars, because the driver instead of watching the road while driving they were trying hard to change the temperature inside by shuffling hard between menus of the software controls?
Are you gonna say something like this : "hey, I was killed by this electric car, but I'm very happy that this car has very sophisticated sofware controls and entertainment" ?!?! 😏
