It seems that the ebay algorithm seems to favor those who list consistently AND sell consistently. It doesn't matter if they are $50 items or $5 items....it's sales and that's what ebay wants. Additionally, it keeps feedback coming in., which helps a little. Nothing wrong with small sales; this is a big-picture business. Keep up the great work!
I have a friend who sells only "high dollar" items. He is ex-military and into guns and sells scopes and gun parts along with some high end jewelry, but nothing under about $200. I sell mostly small dollar items, occasionally I'll sell something for over $100. He is always saying that I need to work smarter, it's just as much work to list a $10 item as a $200 item. Yes, but he has sold absolutely nothing for nearly 3 months. I've had money going into my account every week. It may not be a huge amount, but it's money, and it helps pay the bills. I have some higher dollar items, and periodically list them, and sometimes they sell, hooray! Sometimes they take a lot longer, so I'm happy to sell that knitting magazine, or odd hank of hand dyed yarn, or vintage figurine, so I can pay my bills every month.
The key is making sure to have a nice mix, so you don't ONLY have low-dollar items. Get those $20 items in, the $50 items ... then sprinkle your $300 in so that when they sell, you can get a nice dinner.
Good point. Some days you only sell the lower price items. And if you didn't have those items listed, then there's a chance you would have sold nothing those days instead.
I hear so many people say things aren't worth their time, but hey, I have time. I'm here at home. I already own the item, and it's here at home with me. And typically, the lower value items I have take a very short time to list. So, yep, if I think it will sell, then I list it. 🙂 And as someone who is also an ebay *buyer*, I really appreciate the folks who opt to sell inexpensive items, because sometimes those are things I'm looking to buy. And I'm grateful I can find them on ebay. There are some items I likely never would have been able to acquire had someone not been willing to list a $5.00 or less item in their store.
I have enjoyed selling lower valued items just as much as higher ones. They always fill in the void for me when sales are slow. I've been there before and have sold plasma as well, so I know where you are coming from. I pick up change when I see it, I recycle cans and scrap, I've done it all. Like you said, if it brings joy to your seller, then it is worth the sale. Thanks for all you do and thank you for my purchase! :)
I typically don't sell anything under $20. However, if I find something that I absolutely love and it is under $20 value, I list it. BUT...I have an extra bedroom in my house, a shed and half of our garage full of inventory. There is no reason for me to be listing small dollar items. When the time comes that I need to, I have no issue listing small dollar items. ❤ Troy, keep doing what you're doing, if it works for you, then no reason to change. -Amy
Came back with one more thought on this. As a RUclipsr, I think it's a good idea for you to have lower priced items in your store, because it allows more of your viewers to support you via your ebay store if they wish. You may not sell items that meet every viewer's fancy, or some viewers may have a limited budget. But if viewers can go to your store and find a low-priced item, then perhaps they can fit it into their budget, or they may opt to buy it just to offer support, even if it's not something they normally purchase.
Selling smalls has helped me create returning customers. I have on buyer, several weeks ago, bought a $4 brooch from me, this week she bought a $35 brooch from me. I have 2 buyers who bought completely ratted-out thrashed Harley Davidson shirts and a towel from me, stuff that was almost too bad for the rag pile, those things were priced super low, they have invited me to contact them with Harley or motorcycle stuff I find in any condition, they want it. Well, I just hit a big load of Harley and motorcycle stuff at a yardsale today, So, I may have buyers already lined up.
I prefer lower priced sales over the higher priced sales. If a sale fails, maybe because the thing arrives broken, the buyer isn’t happy with the product, the shipping goes wrong etc, it’s less pain to write off a $10 sale than a $100 sale
Keep it up! I'm the same way! Since I started doing this full time, I've noticed a lot of people just want the high price and easy stuff. But, thats what makes us better pickers. We are training our selves to learn more and to be able to expand our business in the long run. Keep it up!
You are truly an inspiration to your viewers. I really enjoy your videos. I have been watching your videos for days and am learning a lot. Thanks for taking the time to teach us what you have learned!!
Troy, I feel your pain. Just got done haggling over a $3 loose Hot Wheel. But in the end made about a buck out of a quarter. Sales have been steady since the update fog lifted, all smalls, but my store is mostly small collectibles and toys. Love the content.
I've been told the same thing, that I am wasting my time, etc. But the little stuff is so quick and easy to list and quick and easy to pack and ship. I will keep listing the small stuff.
Your bone china cocker spaniel is Lady from Lady and the Tramp and is made by Haegan Renaker who specialize in small porcelain animals. Worth looking them up and getting familiar with them. I have done well with them when I can find them.
There is a market for everyone some buyers favor lower priced items and some like higher value. It seems like you have a nice mix of items in my opinion, those small priced items add up. I have a sports walkman just like the one you sold I didn't list it because the battery cover is missing and yes like you indicated the sale through rate is so low I might as well keep it. Nice video thanks for sharing.
Man, you are just so real and down to earth. I’ve been broke broke too! I’m watching videos like this to try to train my mind for picking once I start going out to find items which will be this weekend. You buy different than other sellers and you look at the out of the box items and some of them you do very well on them and the rest you still make dollars for the pocket. Thanks for sharing your experience friend. I do have just one question though please. I don’t see you looking up comps as you shop. I’m sure you have lots of experience and don’t need to most of the time but how often do you check the comps while you are there on the scene? Ty I’m learning a ton from your videos! 🙃 Alabama
Love your content, love to hear your stories. Don’t worry about what others think about what you buy to sell, One day they will be your customer. Keep on doing what your doing, we enjoy it. Thank you.
I'm not sure I'd say it brings me joy, but I pick up and sell a lot of remote controls. Some net me $2 after fees and shipping, but some get me $20 or more. I never look them up before buying, generally for way less than $1, but they are very easy to list and ship. It helps me add more listings to my store, and keep the eBay algorithm moving in my direction.
Totally with you on the small, inexpensive items. Especially if they're vintage, sometimes they are the items I like the most even though they aren't the biggest profit!
Anyone who tells you that $2-$5 is worthless should Venmo you $2-$5 to prove their point and if they don't ... well ... You made your point well. It's tiresome hearing the constant "time is money" parrots who never see the irony that they're spending their time leaving comments on RUclips.
I used to sell my plasma too. I wonder if it’s just people like us that appreciate this profession so much because it’s so easy compared to other ways we’ve had to make money 🤔.
I also sell a variety of stuff that are big and small, but the best part of Reselling is the fact that I love it, so I don't mind when it's a small profit! It all adds up!
I'm like you. I will sell anything(S). I say.. 'Must Keep Algorithm Moving' so in my free time I list $1.50 sportscards, free shipping even, and get sales everyday, NOT just those cards. People will speak on selling "low dollar" items, but never mention the money they leave on the table. Not using as many of the listings they pay for with the store subscription as possible. That is really the only number I ever look at. My subscription is 10K "no fee", I'm about half-way there.
I agree! I love selling all the stuff, big and small dollar items. They all add up. Time? It’s my time and I’m spending it doing what I enjoy. If I can sell a quarter for $35, well, that’s a pretty small item! Lol!
I like that you sell some lower priced items. It's realistic, not every sale can be a huge money maker. It all adds up. It sure beats clicking on videos of people trying to convince me they're getting a million bucks for a used popsicle stick they found on the side of the road everyday.
I've been wondering about lower-value items I end up with from lots. I wasn't feeling very encouraged to list anything under $10, but maybe I'll have to take a shot with some smaller trinkets I have and just see what happens. On a side note, my cats do the same thing when I film lol, they are quiet until I start filming. Then they chatter back. 😸 ~Caroline
Everyone has their lowest limit item. Beggars cant be choosers, I buy what there is to resell, dont always get to choose. If I can buy a bunch of $10 items I would. My margins will have to be high though like I got them for 10 cents each though. For example found a box of 37 belt buckles for about $5. Looks cool, listed some from $15 to 75 , none sold yet. I have $10 items and I have several thousand dollar items in my store. The small stuff sells faster and it gets money in my pockets. Once in a while the big items sell but its getting rarer because i'm afraid to list high dollar items. Ebay doesnt protect sellers. Also the economy is bad and high dollar collectors tend to get cheap. So now I sell low cost estate items I find for cheap. I could never sell under $10 items, just too much labor. The cost of living where Im from is high but for other locations $5 may go a long way. Thats why some people can work on small margins.
I actually had a Johnny West action figure and his horse and saddle when I was little. Last summer I found some Johnny West stuff including a stagecoach. The prices were so high it would not have paid to get them. They were cool though.
People who make those comments obviously don't resell! We would all sell high dollar items if we could find them! We can't, so we take up the slack with multiple small profit items. I won't turn up my nose at a dollar!
So if they buy a US listing with free shipping, it will be calculated shipping internationally. If they buy off a foreign eBay site with one of my listings there, I have the cost of shipping figured into the “free shipping” offered. Any import fees are paid by the customer regardless
@@MountainManTreasure Thanks for your quick reply, Troy. So, is there a way to list an item that has free shipping for domestic purchases, and if it's an international sale, the buyer has to pay for the difference in shipping? For example, if it costs $7.60 for YOU to ship an item within the US, but costs $23.60 to ship it to a different country, could you make it so that the buyer would have to pay the difference??
