Hadyn Lander It depends on how good you are at driving in real-life i suppose. My friends found it hard and most of them does not have a drivers lisence. Those who i know of that drives in real life found it easier. Or i should put it like this: Faster to come into the game than those without a drivers lisence.
"Listen to your co-driver" Best advice ever, as someone who has never raced any rally before, the game is so much smoother when you actually concentrate on what the co-driver says.
Some tips I can give is to practice making your car break loose when approaching turns doing Scandinavian flicks. I do this alot especially when approaching 3's and 4's. Another tip I can give, when approaching hair pins where using the handbrake to get the car to come around the turn, before engaging the handbrake tap the left foot brake first this will transfer the weight of the car to the front wheels and allow them to "bite" and will create a pendulum effect as the rear breaks loose and swings around while the front wheels pulls the car into the inside of the turn.
@@charliebernhardt410 Right. What it really boils down to it is just judging the turns, using what works best for you, and see if it shaves off a few seconds on your run. Also as Vincent Baelde-Miller mentioned, engine braking is a great thing to pick up too.
I got dirt rally yesterday and this video definitely goes through what I struggle with. Thank you for making this video, it touches on what I need to improve on
I've been playing Colin Mcrae rally games since I was kid on PlayStation1 .. last dirt game I've was Dirt 2 .. the new Dirt Rally is way much different and challenging comparing to the older games .. it took me one day to learn playing Dirt Rally . RIP Colin McRae.. thanks for the tips .. love this game .. Code masters are making extremely fantastic racing games ..
Urf The Manatee I've tried to pit them but they don't even budge. They really fucked up Rallycross, how do they expect you to win against an AI that seem to have instant acceleration out of a corner.
Urf The Manatee Yeah I can't get them to budge, well the only I can get them to budge is a corner where they go sideways slightly. Even then it's a gamble.
Adam Lawrence Im hoping they will fix it because the game is relatively new for console, after hours and hours I did manage to get promoted from junior though

the best advice i can give to the new players of dirt rally is: avoid the Lancia 037 in the group B (RWD) class and the Lancia Stratos in the 1970 class at the beginning. they're unforgivable oversteer monsters and if you are too brutal with them(especially the 037. it's like driving on eggs with this car), you'll get your car extremely damaged. so, avoid them on the beginning to learn how works the physics first. later, you can take them ;)
I picked up the stratos right after finishing with the 60s mini because I thought "oh it's the most expensive and it's RWD, it'll be easy." honestly once you get used to it it's great but at first it's like you're on ice
@@CardboardOdyssey I was the opposite i just installed the game today and i love the stratos idk why but i can handle it very nicely almost every other car i crash every corner though
Something that helped me, is changing the transmission to a manual clutch one over an automatic one. I played most of DiRT 2 and 3 with an automatic, changing to manual once I got the hang of driving, but knowing DiRT Rally was much harder, I went back to automatic so I could focus more on controlling the car over shifting. Once I changed to a manual the car felt 100x better and helped me be able to control where my car was going through corners better. On automatic the car always felt like a solid rock that never turned, once changed, it felt like I could maneuver once again. I know its common sense for most to play on a manual already, but for someone who plays racing games a bit more casual, using an automatic may have not been tried.
The Dark Souls of racing games. I bought it 3 hours ago, and I am hooked. Wish it had some more vehicles and a raid class in it though. But even still, absolutely no buyer's remorse here.
+DiRT Central I am playing on the console, and for some reason I cannot get the clutch to work right. It seems to only work for a split second while I am changing gears. Please help
+Marcello Scacciotti Manual sequential does not use the clutch, you can a) allow clutch kicking in preferences b) choose a gear option that has a + clutch option
It might not be part of the basics, but nearly everyone that drives top 10 times uses either dashboard or bonnet/hood cams. It's much easier to get a proper feel of the car that way.
Yeah its true but in some cars the cockpit doesn't really allow you to see that much due to the camera making the windshield too small. Just my opinion .
If its any help my tip would be to imagine the car as a hovercraft when driving on gravel/snow. Turn in early to glide the car round the corner. Hope this helps some subs. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work btw what is the song/tune in the intro?
Just stumbled on this video trying to learn about tuning my Renault Alipine and found it very helpful, thanks for taking the time to post this. I've subscribed!
My dad told me a story today about a rally he was at where colin mcrae was racing, and apparently the front wheel of the car came off at the land corner as colin aas drifting sideways round the corner and the suspension kept him up and he went across the finish line lol
2:09-3:17 That is true. If you are going to become a rally driver competing in your local rally events or just play any rally games, *YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOUR CO-DRIVER*. In fact, the driver is the one telling the co-driver what to write in his pacenotes during recce so the co-driver can tell the driver what corner is coming up during a race, so it's logical that the driver should learn what those calls mean. So please do not ignore this advice. Good commentary ;)
One bonus point, filling out a crew with perks for the car you're driving makes it MUCH faster to fully upgrade it! Drivetrain, country of origin, class, and specific car. You have 3 different perk 'levels' that you can assign crew to
Nice Video, but new players might miss a few points. When talking about co-driver and pace notes, you should mention that the numbers like "80" do mean that the next event is 80 m after the current corner/whatever. And prepare new players for the AI ;). Some players will be frustrated because they try to get first every stage.

Pro Tip: Get a Steering Wheel and Pedals! I've been playing for a while now with an XBOX ONE controller but it is SO MUCH easier with a wheel. It's a bit counterintuitive, but for the most part your steering inputs (besides countersteering) will need to be very small, which can be very difficult with analog sticks. If you've got clumsy thumbs and a sim isn't an option for you, I've found Kontrol Freeks (usually used for FPS games) can help by extending your thumb's range of motion. This makes it a bit easier to cope with the need for small steering inputs. Glad to see a DiRT specific channel! Your first commentary is better than many guys who've been doing it for a while lol
great video guys! i just want to know what setting/preferences are the best for beginners? i have some trouble controlling cars at high speeds, especially RWD cars.
Firstly - turn off ALL of the supposed aids - like steering correction, ABS, traction etc. Then you will get to know your car properly - every mistake you make will be your own, not the game's (plus you get a credits bonus for doing that). That's how you will genuinely learn the limits of your vehicle. Secondly - drive your vehicle just as you would do in real life. If I was on gravel, in the wet, I would take things easy. Losing control of your car in real life means becoming dead or disabled .. treat this game the same way and you'll go far. It's not hard to do - just imagine that this is a real situation, and apply all of your real world driving experience.
Good points...especially 'don't cut' and feathering the accelerator.I spent most of the time crashing, flipping etc and I didn't like it a first.Practice makes perfect,it's a great game :)
heres some useful tips for all you noobs out there, play with all assists off and no-hud. you may find it hard at first but be patient and rewards shall follow.
+Bastian Sentker Mainly due to you being able to push the car to it's limits without the intervention of assists, also no hud and assists gets a bonus to rewards in career mode up to 21%
DiRT Central for me i like to have as less distraction as possible so i race head cam with no assits and no hud so its just my eyes on the road and ears for co-driver
1. pick your fav car and livery 2. set at default tune 3. go to dirtfish 4. make sure wheel settings are sensitive 5. drive around 6. practice e brake turns 7. practice drifts by quickly turning wheel right to initiate a drift 8. now practice in Australia time trial 9. soon you will get used to the physics of drift 10. tinker with tune, repeat...
Btw these are really beginner tips as the video suggests, i really thought it would be a bit more in depth. For example controlling your car in a slide with throttle and brake rather than steering wheel, or usage of handbrake, or apex of a corner, or timing of a brake. I think these are the things that will help a beginner more than this video. Don't get me wrong these are the basics yea, but if someone coming to a badass sim rally game from an arcade racing platform.... Oh boy, i pity the fool.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this game (particularly RWD) much harder than Dirt 3. I thought RWD in D3 was tough but in this game I'm like "what's the benefit of this?" In FWD or AWD, I find I can just mash the gas pedal and slow down when I need to, effectively making me go as fast as the car (and physics) will let me, while having pretty good control. But in RWD I feel like you're at a huge disadvantage, where you're wasting a lot of acceleration time just trying to get the car to stabilize. Even when I let go of the trottle, RWD cars just feel like the tires are made of plastic, where I'm still struggling to go straight. I think RWD would be much easier if I had a real wheel and pedals, because being fast and precise via a tiny thumbstick and trigger seems too hard.
+irjerry3 Sorry that we didn't have the type of music you like! Its not dubstep either, its trance/electronic, for background music. Its just for an intro... not to mention, I guess the whole game must be a "Turn off" as there is... "dubstep" music in the menus and replays :)
My biggest two tips: Drive with bonnet/hood cam or even first person! If you say " I can't do that view!", get used to it, it's better. Second, this is a tip for sharp corners or hairpins more or less. When doing a handbrake turn, keep in mind you can come into these pretty fast, but don't just use the handbrake, you can maintain a level of control by using the foot brake as well. Use it to slow yourself if you're carrying too much speed. Practice makes perfect!
thank you very much for this video that will help many people, because this game is very deep and so as Dirt2 and Dirt3. You guys,( viewers), should listen carefully to what this tutorial say, because every thing matter in rally, don't leave some thing without knowing it perfectly, this will result in an awesome experience that you will never forget and you will play dirt even after completing the game because it is not limited, I mean the experience and enjoyment. When you spend lots of time leaning from your mistakes, you will improve in a way that you might find some thing which is an important fact, but you have found it from the experience. For example, in the video the commentator said that you can use the clutch as a downforce to get the car to slow its speed, this is fact, for me I didn't know that but with my experience I noticed its effect on the car while I was trying to drift for many time,( this was a long time ago), when I saw this video I was happy that I knew this from the experience I had, And here comes the really great thing about Dirt Games. For me, I love these videos, because no one would do this in the past... I don't know why?! , make it a series of tutorials, many thing could be taught, like Co-Driver word explanations and many other more
+Sekai Ori No Game No We do eventually plan on something like this! Our main issue is time and upload speeds, unfortunately the both of us don't have the best of internet upload speed and WeBe runs also his own channel so its harder for him to spend time making content for this one as it already takes him around 6 hours to make a video for his own! We'll see what we can do!
+DiRT Central Ok... well, good luck, and we are waiting for another tutorial at any time, don't worry, I am a patient man, this is your channel and we are your fans, so we will absolutely wait for another awesome video tutorial, peace out friend
Also remember ABS OFF, Stability control Off, Traction control off is the most fun way to play but if you drive something like the Sapphire Cosworth you'll spin out a lot. Keep revs medium some cars turbos are high revs and short shifting or just treading lightly on the throttle is the way to go, only flat out when the track is straight. Usually cars with Engine Front and 4WD are the better ones for the scandi flicks and that the end feels more like it w ill go where you point it but the mid ranged 4wds tend to feel like they have weight and more grip. So excited for Dirt 2.0 xDD
Could you do a tutorial on setting up cars for different surfaces, and uphill/down hill setups. I've read about the theory, but whenever I try it out for myself, I end up destroying the handling! Thanks.
Wow you guys are heroes. So touching to see mentally handicapped people doing things like making RUclips videos. Really amazing that you're not letting your mental disabilities stop you. Keep it up!
Good video. I think you should try making a couple of other videos on more advanced techniques like left foot braking, different techniques to get the car to slide smoothly (scandanavian flick, handbrake, clutch kick etc.) or how to control the car when transitioning between slides. You get the idea :D
Tip: if you drive down a hill fast and you have a hard turn, don't push the brakes too hard, better push it like 3-5 times to pevent the wheel blocking.
I always took the numbers as the gear to take the corner with sort of in the alternate order, so 1 was 5 and 5 was 1, or 2 if I felt like a skid. Worked for me. Also anyone with a wheel on pc try Richard burns rally if you haven't had your fill yet.
You did not mentioned that on some tracks especially in bends in Germany you can see tire tracks and as beginner player can try to fallow those tracks, this helped me.
I fucking hated the fact that if you crashed you pretty much couldnt play anymore, you could only fix 1 part of the car and it was so annoying to drive with a broken car
Hello DirtCentral, I really enjoyed watching this video, the advice would probably come in handy when I do start playing DiRT Raly at the end of the year, but I am left with one question, for Keyboard and Mouse users, how exactly can I feather the throttle without continuously having to 'tap' the throttle numerous times in a turn? Also, when I slide the car on Gravel, or snow, should I countersteer or just let the car sort itself out?
+035 Grounded Zero Unfortunately the only way to feather the throttle is to tap the key. When sliding though, it depends how much you are sliding, sliding a small amount you can let the car settle down again, a large slide would require counter steer to prevent you from spinning
Finally found a copy of Dirt Rally for a good prince (29 € for the Legend Edition). I've always been a fan of the Colin McRae rally games, and right now I'm absolutely ADORING this game. I play on ps4.
Bought it a couple days ago to. Its cool that its so challenging. I was on the 8th Place then on fifth then third and the feeling is so great when you know you was faster then before.
Hell my biggest struggle is with RWD and AWD cars. I always seem to find some way to lose the back end of my car even on the easy high speed 5 and 6 turns that I can normally go flat out in a FWD car. I can't seem to grasp how to recover from or avoid these situations
I''d like to think since I grew up in a household where my father is a rally fan I'd listen to the co-driver. The reality would be me cutting and hitting a boulder.
Yestetday I spent an hour to win 1 rallycross (4laps) with a wheel. Damn, this is so hard, love it. I have also Dirt 4 and that is baby stuff comparing to Dirt rally.
"If in doubt, flat out", is purely Subaru saying. Subarus will understeer if not given enough welly, hence the heritage behind that saying. That does not have anything to do with Escort Mk II. :D
Just got this game and I'm loving it. Using a controller as well no problem. I'll probably save up some cash and get a wheel eventually. Game sounds and feels and looks amazing
Good video! I can win a race on Assetto Corsa on the highest difficulty level in equal conditions, but in this game i got my a** kicked! Fantastic game though, definitely worth its money but maybe not for everyone!
Well I sure wish i checked this out before [playing last night for the first time.. what a disaster haha. took the Renault when i should have took the Mini, all over the track only using arrow keys rolled it once, off the track too many times to count. sounded and drove like i blew some tires driving on rims. in the end i just got up to speed and did suicide off a cliff. was crazy fun though. No idea which one it is but got it free on steam from GTribe

DiRT Central yep i dont have a wheel so i still use automatic but works for me and i have a great time everytime i play
1. pick your fav car and livery
2. set at default tune
3. go to dirtfish
4. make sure wheel settings are sensitive
5. drive around
6. practice e brake turns
7. practice drifts by quickly turning wheel right to initiate a drift
8. now practice in Australia time trial
9. soon you will get used to the physics of drift
10. tinker with tune, repeat...
2:33 "Seriously , don't cut!"
this video is extremely good. From the tips to the commentary, it was all great.
Luis Magana Thank you :)
Watching DiRT Rally 1.0 videos makes me want to play this old relic more.
Who else is here because they just got the game for free on steam
Me
Me.I also got free PTSD.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds this game (particularly RWD) much harder than Dirt 3. I thought RWD in D3 was tough but in this game I'm like "what's the benefit of this?"
In FWD or AWD, I find I can just mash the gas pedal and slow down when I need to, effectively making me go as fast as the car (and physics) will let me, while having pretty good control.
The dubstep is a huge turn off. It feels way too boy racer.
+irjerry3 Sorry that we didn't have the type of music you like! Its not dubstep either, its trance/electronic, for background music. Its just for an intro... not to mention, I guess the whole game must be a "Turn off" as there is... "dubstep" music in the menus and replays :)
+DiRT Central good video, I liked the intro music. very subtle
irjerry3 Fuckin merked
DiRT Central dub step is beautiful, it's not musical, it's riddim/rhythm ;) nice video mate cheers
whats wrong with boy racers? The car culture isnt in the professional leagues, its on the streets and small-time garages.
The ppl who create these games and of course the hardware they run on, are magicians - it looks fantastic!!
At first I thought he was gonna say "hey guys my name is chaotic" because he sounds just like chaoticravenger
4:43 why dont u just use ur headlights bro?
thank you very much for this video that will help many people, because this game is very deep and so as Dirt2 and Dirt3.
+DiRT Central Ok... well, good luck, and we are waiting for another tutorial at any time, don't worry, I am a patient man, this is your channel and we are your fans, so we will absolutely wait for another awesome video tutorial, peace out friend
so are the tracks in real life too?
Yes, all the rally stages in DiRT are parts of past and present Rally stages
How did the cars survive finland?
i live near the rally tracks of finland
De-M-oN Luck.
De-M-oN wings
The team management is going to help so much, I did not know about that until now.
so essentially treat it like actual racing lol
+Cody Yes.
I get what the co-driver say but wtf does 5 left 40 means
+layerdballoon There is a 5 left and the 40 mean there's a 40m straight to the next turn
+DiRT Central ohhh on wrc i drive 40km/h in those corners xD thank you so much
No problem!
what does a 5 left mean
How long or short a turn is a 6 being the longest and hairpin being the shortest. Look up wrc rally terms on google
Love your content, because I like racing rally games so much and your channel is dedicated to what I like, I'M SUBSCRIBING!! :)
It is not so hard in the beginning. But i havent played any dirt game before this. And my dad is a rally driver. And i am co for him
Could you do a tutorial on setting up cars for different surfaces, and uphill/down hill setups. I've read about the theory, but whenever I try it out for myself, I end up destroying the handling! Thanks.
We'll see what we can do :)
Wait- I got this game on humblebundle for free not really knowing what it was- and its a multiplayer game? *cries in anxious paranoid girl *
co driver: dont cut!!!
me driving the car uncontrollably: THE CAR WONT LISTEN MAN!!!
bought this game played for 2 hours then returned it lmao
Shingeki no kyojin Season 2 what is wrong with you
Shingeki no kyojin Season 2 git gud
Wow you guys are heroes. So touching to see mentally handicapped people doing things like making RUclips videos. Really amazing that you're not letting your mental disabilities stop you. Keep it up!
I fucking suck at this game
Yeah, I was the master at DiRT 3, Showdown (yeah, not rally game, I know) and I was even average at DiRT 2, but DiRT Rally is so fucking hard
This game is super hard, but so much fun! currently playing with a G29 on PS4. Would be great to see more tips for wheels users
Good video. I think you should try making a couple of other videos on more advanced techniques like left foot braking, different techniques to get the car to slide smoothly (scandanavian flick, handbrake, clutch kick etc.) or how to control the car when transitioning between slides. You get the idea :D
Nice video. How about a 'how to do a proper hairpin'' with clutch kick and all. And a wheel setup guide.
Talk to me when you have driven Stratos in Wales with a keyboard.
Tip: if you drive down a hill fast and you have a hard turn, don't push the brakes too hard, better push it like 3-5 times to pevent the wheel blocking.
this is an incredibly well done vid, especially considering it's your first commentary
I play with the t500 rs racing wheel. could you guys maybe do a video about how to set it up?
Thx and nice first vid ;)
I always took the numbers as the gear to take the corner with sort of in the alternate order, so 1 was 5 and 5 was 1, or 2 if I felt like a skid. Worked for me.
Also anyone with a wheel on pc try Richard burns rally if you haven't had your fill yet.
You did not mentioned that on some tracks especially in bends in Germany you can see tire tracks and as beginner player can try to fallow those tracks, this helped me.
Just watch samir driving, everything you cant do is shown there.
" *LISTEN TO MY CALLLS!* " -Samir's co-pilot
I fucking hated the fact that if you crashed you pretty much couldnt play anymore, you could only fix 1 part of the car and it was so annoying to drive with a broken car
Hello DirtCentral,
I really enjoyed watching this video, the advice would probably come in handy when I do start playing DiRT Raly at the end of the year, but I am left with one question, for Keyboard and Mouse users, how exactly can I feather the throttle without continuously having to 'tap' the throttle numerous times in a turn? Also, when I slide the car on Gravel, or snow, should I countersteer or just let the car sort itself out?
+035 Grounded Zero Unfortunately the only way to feather the throttle is to tap the key. When sliding though, it depends how much you are sliding, sliding a small amount you can let the car settle down again, a large slide would require counter steer to prevent you from spinning
Ah, thank you.
I was on the 8th Place then on fifth then third and the feeling is so great when you know you was faster then before.
thank you, new at the game here and i love it!
Great tips guys💯
Appreciate it✌️
Hell my biggest struggle is with RWD and AWD cars. I always seem to find some way to lose the back end of my car even on the easy high speed 5 and 6 turns that I can normally go flat out in a FWD car. I can't seem to grasp how to recover from or avoid these situations
Didn't expect to find a WeBe video on DiRT
+Louis Gordon I have other past times as well as my channel ;)
1:17 Rally master? Aa the nostalgia.. Rally Masters was awesome
I feel like I need a coach to review my driving style to suggest some useful tips later
Tanks guys keep up the good work !!!
I''d like to think since I grew up in a household where my father is a rally fan I'd listen to the co-driver. The reality would be me cutting and hitting a boulder.
hohooo, im here because I just purchased the game on 2017 for PSVR, btw, this game is awesome on VR.
Yestetday I spent an hour to win 1 rallycross (4laps) with a wheel. Damn, this is so hard, love it. I have also Dirt 4 and that is baby stuff comparing to Dirt rally.
Hey man. Ur channel is amazing
"If in doubt, flat out", is purely Subaru saying. Subarus will understeer if not given enough welly, hence the heritage behind that saying. That does not have anything to do with Escort Mk II. :D
good vid guys how bout an in dept vid of co driver calls and what they mean
A bit disappointed this guide is for arcade players and not for simers like me, but the video is really well made, great job!!
Thank you! Well it is a beginners guide :p
+DiRT Central well this is the quickest answer I've ever seen ahahah
TeKGeniu yeah I'm on my phone so a notification pops up when someone says something ^^
+DiRT Central same here ehehe
Always try manual transmission. Use engine break by release throttle and shift to lower gear when tackling corners.
Soon Fung I might get this game tomorrow.. Think it's worth it?
Simply the best rally game ever made, period!
I've been playing for a while now using chase camera, I swapped over to first person recently and didn't realise how much of a difference it made.
Just got this game and I'm loving it. Using a controller as well no problem. I'll probably save up some cash and get a wheel eventually. Game sounds and feels and looks amazing
Maybe you could do a video explaining the best way of driving on snow?
+Gonudo That would be nice, Sweden is a hell hole
Still the best rally game codemasters have made!
Good video! I can win a race on Assetto Corsa on the highest difficulty level in equal conditions, but in this game i got my a** kicked! Fantastic game though, definitely worth its money but maybe not for everyone!
7000th subscriber i love ur vids bro 😄
Well I sure wish i checked this out before [playing last night for the first time.. what a disaster haha. took the Renault when i should have took the Mini, all over the track only using arrow keys rolled it once, off the track too many times to count. sounded and drove like i blew some tires driving on rims. in the end i just got up to speed and did suicide off a cliff. was crazy fun though. No idea which one it is but got it free on steam from GTribe
Samir, you are breaking the car!
Best racing game ever. I'm trying to win career mode now in the Master class and still learning 🙂 watch my vids. Waiting for DIRT Rally 2.............
good choice of intro music
Keep trying. Thats how i learned to DiRT
