- The Israeli military says a long-range missile fired from Yemen has landed in an open area in the centre of the country.
Early morning air raid sirens sounded in several towns and cities including at Israel's international airport. It's understood nine people have sustained minor injuries. Yemen's Houthis have repeatedly fired drones and missiles toward Israel since the start of the war on Gaza, but the majority have been intercepted. The Iran-backed group claims this missile evaded Israel's Iron dome defence. Our guest Elias Hanna, Military analyst and retired Lebanese Army General, is discussing how it is possible.

Edit: with the news coming out, this houthi missile managed to travel about 2000km in 15 minutes ish. Depending on the tragectory, this is a march 8-10 missile. Very impressive.
Sonic: approximately 340 meters per second, or approximately 1240 km per hour.
Subsonic: less than the speed of sound.
Supersonic: greater than the speed of sound.
Hypersonic: at least 5x the speed of sound.
But the man is right, there is regular hypersonic and realllllly hypersonic. For example, the Iranian Kheibar Shaken is said to be hypersonic at about March 5-7 at the point of impact. The Russian Kinzhal is between March 9-12, which is almost twice as fast. Where as the Chinese DF-41 (much bigger missile) caps out at March 26.
The main selling point of hypersonic missiles is that fast missiles are harder to intercept, but speed is not the only thing, nor is it the most important thing. For example, the US minuteman ICBM has a top speed of March 23, but is relatively less difficult to intercept than the Kinzhal missile, because ICBMs follows a huge arc tragectory that is somewhat set in stone by gravity and its launch position. The minuteman also flies for approximately half an hour so there is plenty of time for detection, calculation, and interception. The Kinzhal, while slower, can be fired much closer to its target and lands in a minute or two, and if its fired from a plane, it doesnt do an arc across the sky with calculable path. What really evade interception is the tech that allows missiles to change directions mid-flight, and tech that lets them suddenly speed up, or make false tragectories where it can fly across the sky pretending to hit a distant target but suddenly dive down when its closer to its real target.
All of this is to say, regardless of what tech is used in it, or how fast it is, if the missile lands, its a good missile (ironically, provided that the missile lands, you want the missile to be as 'low tech' as possible to reduce cost and mass produce). Since they said it landed, then it must not be intercepted, and for their purposes, houthis got a nice missile.

Word has it that the US is two generations behind Russia in terms of missile tech, these "hypersonic" missiles are probably one gen above patriot given to Iran proliferated to Yemen, that would be my guess. For the first time the resistance may have a technological advantage in this arena. If you don't have an airforce you rely more on missiles.
For missiles, that is probably true. However, the U.S. has a fine-grained force continuum whereas Russia doesn't.

We don't have experience in the new forms of war. From what I know we are still using pretty antiquated and over priced equipment, really the only truly new piece of tech is the F35 and even then they aren't maintained and have been almost universally regarded as a waste. Our system is is for privatized interests to make profit over purpose. How many missiles we make in year? 600 patriots maybe?
