Phil Collins was always destined to be a super star the day Gabriel left Genesis and Phil came out as lead singer. Even if he never made Face Value, he would have worked his way into more songwriting through Genesis. Phil IS the reason Genesis became so popular and it was his voice and drama school performing skills that helped him succeed. Phils performance in the 1986 Genesis Live at Wembley encore of Turn it on Again is a master class in performing and he had the audience in the palm of hand. Pure genius.
I would love to see Phil give us one more CD even if it’s of old tracks never released. I listen to PC and Genesis every day. No better band or performer. Period.

@@EverythingPhilCollins I still think he can pull it off with some songs or an album he went accoustic or low key. His voice is still there when hes low... I remember crying when he did You What I Mean (best sad song from PC) because his voice was emotional- in my opinion anyway. You give some great ideas refering to Joni, Rick Rubin and Both Sides.

Phil Collins is easily among the greatest artists of all time. The depth of his music is amazing and beyond the identifiable hits lies a catalogue of songs that are just outstanding. I don’t feel that Phil owes us anymore after retiring but I do believe we need to acknowledge Phil by inducting him into the rock and roll music hall of fame for his contributions as a solo artist.

I think the coolest thing Phil could do right now would be to share all his videos and journals and notes of his storied career. The Making of Mama and his book shows us he loved to document everything and he’s often been called the note taker in Genesis. I think he has so much to share about the live he’s lived that it would be cool if someone would put that all together. I also think something like that would definitely have the public put pressure on the HOF to get him in there. Maybe he could release a song to go along with something like that. I don’t know if he has the heart to record music anymore and it wouldn’t be worth doing if he had to be talked into it. But a quality documentary or storytelling show would be awesome.

You can say stuff against me but not one of my favorite singers of all time. We got his back. If he thinks we don’t he’s very wrong. He’s got a few Grammys and an Oscar. In the old days of Genesis, it wasn't unusual for the band to sit while they played and Peter stood and sang. It looked classy and "serious". If Phil took the stage and everyone sat, I don't think it's a problem at all. But Phil's voice was sounding very thin on the last Genesis tour. Anything challenging at all was sung in a lower octave than the original, which zapped the energy right out. So, Phil would have to write accordingly. His ability to belt songs out was one of his trademarks. There is no bigger Phil fan than me, but I know those days are over.....

Looking back, I’d always thought that just before the Turn it on Again Tour from 2007, Mike, Tony and Phil could have written and recorded 5 or 6 songs. I mean, 15 years after WCD, there must have been new magic between the 3 of them.

I too would also like to have Phil make some new album or maybe some single, but I guess I kinda understand his back injury which was kinda went wrong when he had the operation to fix it, but cause another problems instead. I have seen many of his later concerts and clearly see that he couldn't move his body. it's such an unfortunate thing one had to have gone through. God bless him. Thanks for the video, to keep the legend continue. 👍

I find it pretty absurd how even with the internet and youtube, people STILL think Phil Collins is basically a one hit wonder pop artist that sometimes plays drums. Imagine if everyone forgot Stevie Wonder was also a badass keyboard player or if Somewhere along the line, we as a society kinda forgot how insanely technically proficient and masterful Phil was behind the kit. Even Neil Peart cited him as an influence.
That being said, at least Phil has had something of a public reappraisal. Poor Tony Banks still has never got the recognition I think he deserves as a truly innovative and unique songwriter in the popular music landscape IMHO. Maybe if he ended up actually getting to make the Terminator soundtrack things would be different.

Phil's 'First Final Farewell Tour' Paris concert of 2004 was incredibly entertaining and beautiful. Those who are unfamiliar with his early Genesis drumming or lack any musical knowledge might make such an ignorant comment as this (clearly done for selfish, negative motives to create a focus for self-gratifying tweets).....and not worth a comment, mine notwithstanding. LOL

I think people like Phil Collins now because the way the world is kind of like Dolly Parton. John Tesh went through that unpopular period too. There are some artist that don’t enjoy a comeback and end up playing at Casinos to an aging audience. Millinials too see music from the past in a different light. I played Stryper in my car and a millinial who was in a band liked it. In the 80s Christian rock was lame. Different generations see music differently. Like in the 70s a prog rocker would probably not admit to liking Abba. On Phil Collins I think not being cool got to him, the diss by Oasis who Collins compared to the Beatles which is true. The Manchester bands were just recycling the 60s. I also got the impression Phil Collins never liked his own voice which tried to sound like Peter Grabriel and would have been happy just being a drummer. Even today I don’t think Phil Collins thinks his music is cool, he knows it’s a nostalgic type thing, doing in the air tonight for Monday night football.

Worldwide Phil is definitely a bigger artist than Billt Joel. In the United States Billy Joel is bigger. Not as many number 1 singles but his US album sales are absolutely nuts. Phil's album sales are impressive for sure, but Billy's run between 1977 and 1985 approached peak-era Garth Brooks-level in terms of album sales. And even when Billy was past his commercial peak his studio albums would still reliably go anywhere from double to 5x platinum, which just shows how bizarrely huge he was at his peak because Billy Joel past his prime still outsold many artists in their prime.
Here's some of Billy Joel's US album certifications:
    Piano Man: 4x Platinum
    Streetlife Serenade: Platinum
    Turnstiles: Platinum
    The Stranger: Diamond (10x Platinum)
    52nd Street: 7x Platinum
    Glass Houses: 7x Platinum
Songs in the Attic (live): 3x Platinum
    The Nylon Curtain: 2x Platinum
    An Innocent Man: 7x Platinum
    Greatest Hits 1&2: 23x Platinum
    The Bridge: 2x Platinum
    Kontsert: Platinum
    Storm Front: 4x Platinum
    River of Dreams: 5x Platinum

@@EverythingPhilCollins I think he's a really great artist. Definitely ranks up there among my favorites, along with Phil (of course!), Genesis, Queen, and Prince, among others. One thing he has in common with Phil is that rock critics loved to sneer at his music, while audiences, as well as fellow musicians, tend to really love him. And much like Phil, 1960s motown and soul in general had a HUGE influence on his music. I think if you looked at their record collections when they were teenagers you'd find a LOT of stuff they had in common.
I wasn't actually aware of Billy Joel's new song until you mentioned it here though, so thanks for that! 😊 And I'd love to see Phil do something similar. I've been rather worried about him ever since I saw the Final Domino tour and the promotion surrounding it. He wasn't nearly as talkative as he used to be during the interviews. I really hope he's okay, and I would very much love for him to get his moment in the sun now that he's in the autumn of his music career. I would love for him to be welcomed back with open arms. If Tony Bennet was able to have a career renaissance at 80, I don't see why Phil wouldn't be able to have one. But yeah, it would be a good idea to not try to be 1985 Phil, and take a more Johnny Cash-like approach.

Phil was so overexposed in the 80s/early 90s with all his success that he was bound to face some backlash. Much in the way the Bee Gees did. It's always unfair and unwarranted, but just what seems to happen. I've been a Phil fan since the early 80s and saw it happen in real time. I always defended Phil and always will. Between Genesis and his solo work, he literally wrote the soundtrack to my early life.

When I grew up in the 80s he was always a contemporary Pop artist. He’s a good song writer but sorry to say never really cool. Joy Division would have been considered cool or Michael Jackson before he turned weird or during hair metal Guns n Roses. Phil Collins his music was a bit like the band Chicago song wise or Gilbert O’Sollivan, Bet Midler, and there’s nothing wrong with appealing to an office worker or more mature audience.
