    To people freaking out about this: Valve has built this as an open PC, and I plan to inform people about ALL aspects of it, not just SteamOS. Do I believe SteamOS will be the best experience by far? YEP. But people will be curious about installing Windows for certain games or software, and they deserve to know what to expect.

      github com wabulu Single-GPU-passthrough-amd-nvidia QEMU KVM one gpu pass through. If you (or Valve or any other) adapt it to RDNA2 and other MS WOS drivers it would be much better than dual booting when needed, it also would allow to have a Manjaro OS installed for productivity.

      I really don't understand the gatekeeping mentality about this. If people want to put windows on it, who gives a shit? That has no impact on YOU. I appreciate you showing all aspects of the deck, even some that may rattle feathers of a few select people.

      Once both mature Windows offers the most flexibility and back catalogue. I plan to daily drive Windows on it almost exclusively. I can install Playnite and configure if i want an easier interface to navigate just my games.

      @@mitcoes With the deck's specs, I'm not sure if I can agree with that. RAM is fine, you can just give Windows around 12GB or 14GB at most which is enough for now, but I don't think there are enough cores to go around. Really cool idea (You could definitely add a script as a non-steam title so Windows would load like an app) but spec wise I think you'd lose more performance than you would want out of it. I think Destiny 2 would be fine this way since it's older, but if a much newer game out there requires anti-cheat that doesn't work with Proton, it probably won't be worth it.

I have tested a great many games on both and that has been my expirence and I think it has tons to do with the shaders cause most games you download on steam comes with shaders precompiled and some reason I think thats whats has given me the edge.. maybe wrong idk but will bet fully supported games on SteamOS/Linux edges windows out because even DirectX has to compile shaders on windows even though you never notice unless you look at fps. The recent Elden Ring shader update on SteamOS/Linux speaks volumes to this fact as the game hardly stutters for me on Linux and get about 10 more FPS on my rig over windows

    With good drivers and a few tweaks I'm almost sure windows can be jumping between 0 and 1% on lowest clocks.
    Also with something like tiny windows custom installation with crapware removed windows can even go to around half a GB or less on memory usage, but it's better to do it to like 1.5 to 2GB or will be too stripped with nothing in it 🙂

    How are you finding windows on the deck? I am using it but feel it's a double edged sword. I mod a lot of my games and that was the main reason. But if someone prefers a console type experience then steam os looks better for those users. Installing games on SD card on windows is so much slower allocating space IMO.

    Not specific to the use of windows but I wonder:
    On SteamOS desktop,
    Can you install packages besides flatpack inside home, without getting them lost with an OS update, through the use of methods such as:
    - chroot
    - mount
    - etc...
    By yourself?
    I was thinking maybe making some specific mounts towards your home and install something like buildah, then use that to assist so everything is installed inside the home.
    Then, inside a buildah container, installing whatever apps without containerization (using --privileged or x11docker).

    As a windows user since a kid on Windows XP. I don't get the pitch fight. Yeah, Windows is the market leader, comes installed with everything. But, it's kind of for a reason. There hasn't been a true competitor to Windows. Yes, there are Linux distros that have a windows feel, even steamOS but, even with that, a normal computer user just wants simplicity. Trust me, as someone who does IT in a corporate setting, if companies could use Linux most would to lower costs. But A) Applications/Features you expect won't work or B) It would cause more technical support. Now, with proton that barrier to entry is almost their. But, as a gamer I want my Fortnite's and my Gamepass/other launchers that aren't on Linux. Plus, if there's an issue, I know my way around. I'll be dualbooting when the chance comes by and the deck is in my hands. I like what both OS's have to offer.

I didn't even know about Linux but when I casually discovered it, it felt suddenly familiar and intuitive. For me windows was blindly following random guides w/o understanding what I do, with Linux I see what's going on under the hood and it helps me understand what I do and why. Still today whwnever I use windows I feel lost and I can't really do much with it

      I didn't know people were that paranoid about windows lol. I love what steam os is doing but, the games that I want to play (mainly online) won't work with it. So dualbooting when that releases is the only option. As an IT guy, I use windows everyday so, I don't get why people treat it like Voldemort.

      @@JustCliff Not paranoid, just experienced, as an IT guy myself of 30+ years. Up to Windows 7 I loved it, but not anymore with the newer versions. Also, as much as I dislike Windows, I have one VM for a few bits, and I keep myself up to date with the OS to help others.

      @@foznoth I'm in IT as well but, as a new trainee. I get what you're saying. I've been using windows since a kid with XP. The only one that I didn't like was 8. They weren't on the ball all the way. 10 did fixed all of those concerns. And 11 is just more of the same but, requires a Microsoft account and tpm.

    If a lot of people start using Windows on this, companies like Bungie and Epic will use that as an excuse for not allowing anti-cheat to work on the native SteamOS. Please people just Install Windows to satisfy your morbid curiosity, but try to stick with SteamOS so game developers can't have an excuse for not giving proper support.

    • @TheKsharm
      @TheKsharm 2 года назад +1

      exactly... the Steam deck needs to make games that don't use these tools popular because they are on the deck and those games that do use these tools will soon change

    • @JustCliff
      @JustCliff 2 года назад

      Nah, there's no way for them to know that statistic. If they want to get anti-cheat to work they'll do it.

      I also want to see SteamOS get more support from bigger companies but it shouldn't be on the customer to entice companies to support a specific platform/OS. If a game that I enjoy doesn't work on SteamOS, I'm not going to sit around waiting for devs to get it to work. I'm either going to install Windows where I know it works or simply not buy the Steam Deck. If Valve wants more people to support the Steam Deck then they have to entice devs to make their games work on their console, simple as that

      These are comparisons of an RDNA2 GPU and Zen 3 processor running the same games on Linux and Windows. The recent comparisons are using performance updates added to Linux by Valve and Collobora (where it says kernel 5.16). The same updates will be in SteamOS 3.0.
      Performance is going to be very similar sometimes better on Linux sometimes better on Windows. EG Elden RIng and CyberPunk runs better on Linux than it does on WIndows. The most recent Forza is maybe 8% quicker on Windows. Swings and roundbouts.
