On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-22-19.
We’re looking at a 1963 Studebaker Lark Regal Ray Tanner Drag Car in Blue Mist Paint. The car features the factory supercharged V8 engine.
The car's Owner is John Kroulik. John’s had this car since 2013. John shares since he found this car in a salvage yard and new it was special by the faded writing on the outside of the door. He and his Friend Mike Lynch took their time and put this one together right.

ENJOY!
I am 81 years old and have fawn memories of the two Studebaker Lark 2 door sedans that I owned back in the sixties.
I would have never known about these great cars if it wouldn't have been for my dear friend Bobby Marks who owned Marks Motors Studebaker in Portland Oregon on 17th and Burnside.
We use to get together offen for coffee or lunch. I stopped to see Bob at a time when he had just taken in a red 1963 Studebaker Lark 2 door sedan.
He tossed the key to me and said go check it out. I had no idea what he was up to.
Bob knew that I liked muscle cars because I had several at that time.
From the start I knew that the car had a supercharger and a 4-speed transmission but had no idea that it was so fast. Needless to say after driving the car I had to own it, because of its breathtaking performance.
The following year he had a dark blue 1964
Studebaker Lark show up at his dealership, and gave me a call.
That one was an R-3, with a 4 speed transmission that was an absolute rocket.
Bob had sold both of these cars new, and the owners traded them in on standard Larks, because, in both cases the owners were scared to death of the brute horsepower, and the way they preformed, which worked to my advantage.

Hi Bud, Happy to read you have good memories of the car Bobby Marks sold you :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your story, Lou
Lou what a beautiful Studebaker! Just a great piece of Studebaker history. I just love the color this car it is just gorgeous. You know me Lou I love Studebakers. As I have told you before my grandfather and uncle sold Studebakers till their demise in 1966. This Studebaker Lark Regal is a 1963. My mom and dad had the same car in a 1962 model and theirs was a bright red with a tan interior. They had a a three on a tree. I see that Paxton blower on this car and it gives me chills! They were so fast and had so much torque that they were known to twist the rear leaf springs out from under the car. I have so so many stories on Studebakers I could tell you. I was raised around them.as a little boy and like they said these cars could live up to their name and hold their own with other fast cars. The took these and Avanti's to the salt flats and they broke tons of speed records. Andy Granatelli was a big part of Studebaker and their testing and racing as he was instrumental in the Paxton blower super charger. I just love love these owners and people you interviewed. And also that white four door 1965 Daytona sitting in the back ground looked awesome too. Just a great great interview and display of this awesome timepiece! Wish we could have heard the engine sound it would have been a chiller too cause they could rumble!! This car was really oddly ordered. Stick shift radio delete probably dog fish hub caps if were installed could not see if it had power steering it did have power brakes! Just so cool and I love his wife's hand bag! Now that is a true Studebaker lover!! Thanks for sharing Lou! Happy New year to you too 🎉 I did hope you show more Studebakers when possible I the future! My grandfather's and uncles dealership is on the Studebaker national registry. Their dealership was in Massillon Ohio. I love love anything associated with Studebakers. My uncle and grandfather sold International Scouts too back then. Thanks Lou!!
Hi Steve Flad, Happy to read this is a car you "love" and I can understand why with your Family history with the cars :-) I would have like to hear this one too. You're welcome, and Happy New Year, Lou
Steve Flad thanks, for a sharing....me too. We from Northern INDIANA, too....originally..
I have a 1962 Studebaker Cruiser with the 289 c.i. V-8.
i Bruce, Happy to read you have a fun car :-) Lou
Sad that such an industry has ended ,,, distinctive, beautiful and practical design !!
Hi AUTO & CAMPING, Good news! You're on the right RUclips Channel for you, Lou
i'm just old enough to remember seeing these vehicles here and there when I was but a very young boy. what an incredible restoration on a historical vehicle. fabulous post for new year's! thanx, Lou
Hi Scott Brady, Happy to read you remember these cars :-) Glad to read you enjoy the restoration on this car. You're welcome, and Happy New Year, Lou
Ummm…… that is the coolest glove box ever: so Mad Men, in every way. But, a supercharged 60's mom, car is so over the top. When I was a kid, those cars were rare on the road and always driven by a mom with three or four kids. When that car was built, I only imagine how the boys driving in Chrysler, Dodge, Ford and Buicks laughed...… Until..... Well, that thing had to smoke just about every production car on the road since, in 63, most of the high output engines where installed in 3 ton, land freighters. Thanks, Lou, for bringing these cars a life here. I really appreciate all the owner's efforts and care to restore this important car.
Hi Chuck Haugan, Happy to read you enjoy this episode & restoration :-) You're welcome, and thank you for viewing and sharing a story too, Lou
Incredible car, history and restoration. Gorgeous! Yes hair raising and goosebumps when the owner opened the engine compartment. Love your channel Lou. What a car to wrap up the year of my car story with Lou. Thank you for what you do
Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy this episode, and happy to read this engine compartment gave you goosebumps :-) Lou
One of the best, most impressive and informative cars you have ever displayed I knew the story about the Whistler. I had heard that slight whistle of the Paxton supercharger did not know about beating out the 421 Pontiac and held the super stock record. Cannot say that I would ever really care to have a Studabaker, but if I could get one like this all matching numbers and original, what a backstory and the pictures and I have a guy that his father had the dealership and could explain the numbers I am beyond impressed very remarkable thanks Lou❤🙏
High praise. You're welcome James.
Great restoration of a very rare Studebaker. I was raised around these cars as Dad worked at the Studebaker dealership. They sold Nash/Rambler and Studebaker. I saw many of these cars new on the showroom floor as well as in the shop for maintenance. They were under rated by most people and in fact years ahead of their time. Thanks for sharing and have a great 2020
Hi ncautoman57, Happy to read your Dad worked at a Studebaker Dealership :-) You're welcome, and wishing you a great 2020 too, Lou
ncautoman57 Being from NorthernIndiana , love Hate with Studebaker, etc. Anyways, seen a lot, even had Studebaker small pick up to drive at TriCounty Game Preserve in 63-65( State Purchases INDIANA Company, etc.): thiugh seen s few Presidents, Golden Eagles kn early years, etc.
Thanks, great Studebaker Stuff.... I am from WARSAW/Wolf Lake INDIANA AREA: interestingly, a HS Classmate’s Older Brother had a 63 (?)LARK supercharged Four speed Blue(?, my Memory) made quite an impression , seeing twice or so: a fast Classic & rare? .. anyways, a few of Studebaker : & better models/ supercharges went overseas, over the years...Couple interesting views of nice survivors, & so on...my Buddies spent most of time on Car talk, Drag racing,,building up, in Garages...
Hi Opera, Happy to read "great Studebaker stuff' :-) Happy to read you know someone who had a 63 Lark too, Lou
I forgot to mention: one your Best( including the 78 Buick/Turbo/ Sport and the 76 HURST olds): I have a soft Spot for SUPER RARE STUDEBAKER STUFF.......& I am pretty sure, many Dealers got real inventive with INSTALLED Options over the years... & REMEMBER THE Three Dueces in Ford Trunks for 390’s......
I've learned alot about Studebaker this year from you Lou . Interesting car . Thanks for posting .
Hi Bud Lee, Happy to read you're learning. I'm learning all the time from the Care Takers and I find that as so much fun :-) You're welcome, Lou

It was a column 'H' 3+R shift. I remember the parking brake handle. Thanks...
Hi Lou another great car story I owned a 1966 Studebaker Daytona that I bought from a used car lot in 1970 I paid a whopping$400 for the car six months later someone I barely knew offered me $600 for the car I was having a little bit of mechanical problems with it so I let him have it for the 600 I wished I'd kept the car it would have been worth a wee bit more than what I paid for it live and learn gray car story Lou 👍
Hi alton wren, Happy to read you enjoy this episode. Glad to read you had a 1966 Studebaker Daytona too :-) Lou

Hi Kenn Love, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) You're welcome, Lou
If anyone needs some parts for a 63 Studebaker wagonaire let me know my last video shows the car
Thanks for sharing.
Wow!! What a fantastic Studebaker Super Lark, story and restoration. Truly an amazing car! It's interesting that Bob Palma sent that letter to Ray Tanner on December 9, 1963. That's the same day that Studebaker announced the closure of the South Bend factories. I wonder if that was a coincidence, or that event predicated the letter? I LOVE Studebakers!! Thanks for posting this amazing car story, Lou.
Hi Scott, Happy to receive a "Wow!!" from you :-) Glad to read you "LOVE Studebakers!!". You're welcome, Lou
On top of everything else with this amazing car, there is a Studebaker romance as well!
Hi chromebone3
, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Lou
Happy New Year Lou! It’s this niche coverage-that others pass-on that makes your vids special. It’s obvious the God factor is abundant in your life’s pursuits! Make it a great 2020!
Hi Richard Malone, Thank you for viewing, sharing the encouraging words, and glad you're able to see "the God factor" is coming out in what I'm doing. Receiving your prophecy of making it a great 2020! Blessing to you, and wishing you a great 2020 too, Lou

Hi Mighty Lonesome, Glad to read you enjoy this episode. Happy New Year! Lou
My grandfather had a 1960 Lark
Hi Larry Napier, Happy to read this car / video brings back memories of your Grandfathers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Happy New Year Lou, what a nice car. Studebaker was cutting edge at one time. That Lark could kick butt back in the day. Paxton Supercharger with a small block naturally aspirated can still kick butt Today.
Happy New Year Joe, Happy to read you enjoy the power this car :-) Lou
Amazing brightwork!!
Happy to read you appreciate the "brightwork" on this car :-)
You could buy the Lark with the supercharged 289 V8. But they are rare as golden eggs.
Enjoy this "golden egg" :-)
Studebaker people are the best! Love the Lark. ..
Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts.
Very nice. Lou and Happy New Year!!
Thank you Ed B. Happy New Year!!
The Avanti R2 engine in a Lark was an effort by Studebaker to “rev up” sales of the dated Lark and GT Hawk. It is ironic that around the time the letter was written to the dealer, Studebaker halted all production in South Bend. Larks made it to Canada for several years after that, but the R2 engine didn’t. This is a very special survivor saved by true Stude aficionados!
Hi Dr Akbar, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Another beautiful car. Happy New Year from Ventura California.🎉
Hi motorTranz, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Happy New Year, Lou

Happy New Year Lou .. .
Happy New Year Shawn
Need much more technical info Engine Specs, Trans, Rear? QTR mile times?
Hi Scott West, Sometimes I have specs and sometimes I don't. This Channel is about why people love the car they have and hearing their story of how they received the car. You might want to check out Road & Track, Car & Driver, or Motorweek for the stats. Hope that helps, Lou
An R2 was Studebaker's 289 with a Paxton Supercharger putting out around 275 h.p. from the factory.
Scott West thanks, lot of interesting Studebaker History/Car Stuff, though rare; besides great Avanti, Golden Eagle, ETC.....I AM ALSO KIND OF INTERESTED IN SOME MORE TECHNICAL STUFF: engines, builds, supercharging, Bonneville,.. Interestingly the Studebaker in South Bend & IN HAS Some great stuff & elswhere:: Great History also...we are from Northern Indiana originally......some of Studes: Presidents, Sports, Avanti are more than extraordinary ....
Happy New Year Lou.
Happy New Year abe frohman.
Cool car 😀 Happy New Year
Hi Michael Coffey, Happy to read you enjoy this "Cool car" :-) Happy New year, Lou
@@loucostabile 😀
Really tough car! Happy New Year, Lou!;-)
Glad to read you think this one is tough :-) Happy New Year !
Studebaker owned STP which is why it's promoted on the valve cover.
Hi Seed_drill
, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
I like the white wheels, I doubt I would letter it tho, but to each his own
Happy to read you enjoy the white wheels :-) You're right, the lettering will make it look like it did when it raced, and I like it the way it is too.
@@loucostabile Happy New Year Lou, all the best to you and yours :-)
Need more info on the carb I have it’s motor in 59 hawk I’m about to start it again and having Erving problems last time I started it need a contact that maybe able to help me thanks .

Paxton original to the car or added? How many 4spds. made?
Hi UderLummox, I cannot say for sure on the Paxton as original or added, and I don't think there were many 4 speeds. Hopefully a Viewer with knowledge will share the answers to your questions, Lou
Studebaker offered the Avanti engine as an option; without Paxton was designated R1, with Paxton was designated R2.
@@michaellynch9655 Right, I figured it was from an older Hawk or an Avanti.
These guys must be miracle workers, to have turned that hulking piece of junk into this gorgeous car!
Hi Gary, Happy to read you appreciate the work done to restore this car :-) Lou
A nice car sorry stude & Packard didn't make it..

Great film, Mr. Lou. Will you take time to track down the owner of the black, '69-'70 Chevrolet Biscayne in the background for a story? Have a Happy New Year.
Thank you Mr. Donald for the kind words on the video. Did not get that 69-70 Chevy in the back ground.....this time :-) If it's meant to be, I'll see it again. Thank you for the Happy New Year wish, and wishing you a Happy New Year too, Lou
Quite a feat beating a Pontiac Swiss Cheese car...
Good point Thomas
That looks like the car I ran into a tree with it was either a Ford or a Volkswagen
