Amazing times from that old Studebaker and 80+ driver!! He makes me feel like a kid at 69!😂 I guess I'll have to get back to the track and relive my youth!
Heavy Chevy better than I expected - and rips off the line, but holy cow that Lark was booking on the top end. Looks like a bracket racing finish with the Stude blowing by.
The gear he is running utilizes the great low end torque that the Chevy LS3 402 bb puts out. With a 3:37 gear a tiny bit slower in the 1/4 but the Chevelle will leave the Studebaker behind.Even though it was a little detuned that big block was underrated.Hp was rated at lower rpm's.
I worked at an AMC dealer that used to be a Studebaker dealer and people that had bought their Studebakers there years earlier, kept bringing them to that same dealer for work. The owner was the same, the dealership just changed from Studebaker to AMC.
Two great cars turning in some darn good times. That Chevelle driver cuts a mean hole shot! And that Stude, sir, a tip of my hat to your car and driving skills! Thank you for these, as always. 🌮 🌮
Watching all this and grinning ear to ear. Studebaker, if only they had a little more time and a few dollars more, if only. David taking on Goliath, what only could have been with better thinking, we'll never know.
Ted has found the fountain of youth! Bottle it up! But, that is not Ted rowing and stomping on the Stude' here. Observe the size of the arm while blasting down the strip and look back at introduction. A bigger, younger fella in a blue tee is blasting the quarter mile today... But still a hot shoe!
Great drags, great cars! Lark was used by police forces in Melbourne Australia. As a car detailer got to drive one. Plenty of power! What a Lark! Cheers 😃
I remember my dad talking about a Lark that used to race at US30 dragstrip in 64 and early 65. When that guy bolted on a set of slicks, no one would race him, so he would just practice clicking off low 12s when he launched right. Mean lil cars!

When I was about 12 years old in 1965 there was a guy that had a white and red Super Stu and me and my cousin got to have a ride in it. It scared the shit out of both of us but man I couldn't belive what the car did when he shifted into 4th gear. It's almost like igniting a rocket booster. He went from 60 mph to way over 120 in just seconds and planted us into the seats. The Studebaker Lark's South African history was chequered to the n'th degree. They were assembled in the Eastern Cape and served admirably as awesome South African Police 'chase cars' that could simply not be beaten. They were replaced by Australian built Chevrolets at the end of their extremely distinguished careers, which were extremely well built, dependable, with a myriad of great features, but lacked the 'brute' acceleration and power of the Studebaker. The only vehicles that can lay claim to the title of 'chase car' today are the top of the range BMW's and Golf's in present service. But that's exactly 60 years of motor engineering later!.
