Hyundai Ioniq 5 rear wiper 'air wiper' 1000 mile bad weather test

- a quick video about the efficacity of the air wiper rear wiper system on the Hyundai ioniq 5. this video was taken after 1000 miles in UK autumn conditions so lots of rain and muck.
I also have an Ionic 5 and cannot agree that no rear wiper is a good idea. It is without doubt the worst design feature of the car. I also do a mix of town and motorway miles and in bad weather on the motorway in the dark it is awful. Apart from that it's a great car! :)
A real design over site. I have mine on lease but i would fit my own if I owned it. Just a basic wiper rmotor fixed to a switch. Yes that all it needed Hyundai. Does it never rain in Korea
In Canadian winters that car’s level of dirt accumulation would suggest it hadn’t left the parking lot.
I have done just under 7000 miles in my Ioniq 5 Premium and have to say I think the 'air wiper' is pointless. At night with cars behind you it is impossible to see out of rear window if dirty. I do a daily mix of motorway and non motorway driving (approx 180 - 220 miles per day) and think things would have been 100% better with a rear washer wiper. Once you get motorway spray on it you can not shift it with air alone.
I did wonder what it would be like in the winter months when it rains hard and the salt etc. Would the air flow deal with that...I dont think so and especially at low speeds
Hi, sorry but I'm not convinced, the dirt build up would have been zero had it of had a rear wiper. I also think at lower speeds say around country lanes ( notorious for mucking up rear windows) it would be worse. Hyundai fitted one on the Kona Ultimate along with adaptive headlights and a sunroof.
To play the devil’s advocate though, any time I use the liquid and wipers to clean my back windshield it ends up getting nasty dirt water stuff all over the rest of the back of the car
My car would be that dirty after a week. I think with all the technology on that car why can’t they just put a bloody wiper on it.
Whoever decided to remove back wiper should be fired today. It is a great car with a st-pid decision not to have a simple back wiper.
It's stupid form over function. Absolutely ridiculous. I will not buy a car that has no rear wiper. Not a fan of SUVs, so next car will be another hatchback or a wagon. 1:20 This is nuts ... "not too bad". Reality check, please.
In snow, sleet or icy conditions it would tend to cake up and then its a serious safety issue. Don't know why this hasn't resulted in a recall. Personally I was almost ready to just test drive and buy one tomorrow, but...
I assume you had some heavy rain the day before you shot this video, thats why the upper part of the window is even more dirty than below. that upper part was shielded from the rain by the spoiler so the rain didn't wash off the dirt on that part of the window, but that window is dirty! believe me as an ioniq 5 owner; the missing wiper is a thing the main design flaw (apart from the LFA) of this car. But I would still buy the car again.
"car is filthy!"
*cries in Canadian*
And now, what do you think of this design in countries with a winter? snow, freezing rain ...
I think that not having a rear wiper has become a bit of a trend. The Jaguar I-Pace doesn't have one and I know that Ian Callum doesn't like them. It also saves money and weight and improves aerodynamics, but on balance I'd rather have one.
Nope. It needs a rear wiper. In wet conditions, my rear view mirror is next to useless. I have to rely on side mirrors. Also a squirt function to clean camera would have been a good idea.
This is like phones coming without a charger now a days... They can put any excuses they want it's just plain stupid way to save some $.
How about when the sun strikes at an angle. Are you still able to see anything in the back? How about moderate to heavy rain in city driving?
It’s crap.
Mine's done 2500 miles and is a lot worse, but as its into the dealer for a software upgrade on Friday I'm sure they'll give it a clean! Funnily enough, I had an Audi A2 about 20 years ago and it had a "special treatment" on the rear window glass - worked a dream, water and dirt just ran off it...
but, what about when its heavy rain. comparing when moving and not moving.
Heavy rain, slow city speed won't work at all.
Visibility not that imapired by not having a rear wiper. Glad to see that. Obviously, I will clean my back glass at home since I never go to the service station...
"remarkably clean" - that level of dirt buildup would prompt me to get a sponge out and clean it manually. If that's what I've got to expect from my Ioniq5, that's going to be a lot of fun.. guess I start keeping a bucket of soap water in the trunk.
They should tuck a wiper up under the top overhang, it would be hidden to not look ugly and probably not collect as much dirt and dust as a bottom mounted one. But I would still buy an I5 regardless.
Does anyone need to see out of a rear window when they have reversing cameras ?
Cameras also get dirty and are useless then.
I have a hyundai Tucson with 4 cameras, I'm in Canada, they are useless in winter.
Dude…you are ultra positive! That’s a dirty window,you need a wiper
I tried one in the rain, didn’t turn out well, I will not buy any car without a rear wiper.
Does the rear camera not make up for it?
No, that’s always just as dirty and covered in spray.
Does not suit Canadian winter roads with all the de-icing material sprayed. The rear window becomes useless for rear view. The back camera view would be a cheap solution but i was told it was not secure to leave it active while moving forward. That's a ridiculous argument in my mind. Might as well cover the rearview mirror if that was the case.
I think it really depends on where you live. In Norway the amount of shit on the road is amazing and you just have a covered read window
You must have a special one then... Everybody else that owns and has reviewed this car ... or has commented on the Forums... says the exact opposite.
I live in Canada and believe me it does not work I test drive in heavy rain on a dirty winter road salt sand and within 10 mins could not see a thing , and yes RainX will work for rain but not the winter dirt on our roads , also here in Canada we can not drive forward with the rear camera on, I believe Hyundai are doing an update so we can. However this was not a deal breaker for me I ordered the car so I am hoping I am in the 2023 batch as they are having quite a lot of small updates .
I believe they excluded the wiper as the car wouldn't be as efficient with one. I don't know how much range we'd lose with a wiper, but that was their reasoning. It would be interesting if they gave people the option to add one to see how different it would be regarding range.
I think the wiper could be set in the recess under the aero feature and wouldn't affect drag. Can't see the energy it uses be an issue, the ICE will consume more power - I'm not driving with no music!
I suspect the next iteration will have a wiper! We test drove it today and the rear window was filthy after 1 hour of other test drives...i'm going to get one, but it is going to be annoying!
try ceramic coat might work better
Not understanding all of the complaints. Just apply some RainX.
Glad it works there, come to Norway mate and you wont see anything through the back 90% of the time.
Let’s be honest, it’s a terrible design and needs to be fixed on future models. I’ve covered 9000 UK miles since August and it just so annoying that I have to constantly clean the rear window before driving. Some owners have said that you can use the rear camera but that’s always just as dirty plus the rear tailgate design is perfect for rain to fall straight onto the lens.
A great car otherwise, but the designer of the rear end needs a good kicking.
No it does not work it needs a wiper !
Totally agree 👍 I own a 2018 BMW X6 that also has no rear wiper and I wish it did. Unfortunately when the sun shines on a dirty back window at a certain angle I can`t see bugger all.
I agree I have the same car, seems a shortcut made, but then again I'm used to driving a van!
Almost as big a mistake as no wireless Carplay, aside from that a great car
@@darranmoore yeah I do like CarPlay but never use it as I never have the lead!
@@jonnysegway7866 . I have to wash the rear screen almost daily when weather is not dry.
You review a wiperless wind screen on a day without rain, snow, or freezing rain?? All you show is a dirty window. Multiple RUclips videos show very poor rear vision on rainy days. With all due respect, If you believe in an “air wiper”, I have a bridge to sell you. Otherwise, a very nice car.
I remember when cars were almost all saloons and there were no rear wipers...or reversing cameras. How on earth did we manage? We cleaned the rear windows a couple of times a week, and before a long journey.
I fear for the future of the world when l read the comments of so many people exhibiting an appalling mixture of laziness and stupidity.
..
lol soy people
I have a 17 year old focus. Manage just fine in London with cameras on every corner of the car x)
the rear wiper is useless AF, anyone that had one on his car knows it. Every one that think otherwise has a personal hygiene probleme... clean the damn car and stop beeing lazy
