Li-Ion Charger + How does a Switching Power Supply work

  • I'm opening an 18650 Li-Ion cell charger and reverse engineering its schematic. Then I'm explaining how does a switching power supply work. This time it's a simple 2-transistor switch mode power supply (SMPS) without an optocoupler.

    Great video. Just bear in mind, when you are talking about the transistor being OPEN or CLOSED the bilingual people would understand you perfectly, but the native English speakers would interpret that in exact opposite to what you mean. Instead of using open and closed terminology its better to use SWITCHED ON and SWITCHED OFF one. This way it is clear to the native English and does not sound weird to the bilinguals. Keep up the good work.

      You are right. It's quite confusing. An open circuit equals to a closed valve or door.

      I was going to complain that using OPEN and CLOSED is fine, but then I watched the video around 5:10. Yeah, he is using OPEN for SWITCHED ON / CONDUCTING, that is not good way of using word OPEN. Open for me means non conductive, just like open switch. Good hint!

    I wonder, i've seen these sub-$50 meggers, VC60B/B+, different branding on silkscreen, Vici, Victor, etc. I know you can't really use them to say whether a transformer is good, because as it sings along, bad things can happen, lacquer can break, mediocre insulation can shift, but are they good enough to tell you whether the transformer is still reasonably isolated right now and not going to shock you right tonight?

  • @kruemmelbande5078

    Well I prefer parralel charging instead of series, yes if the batteyes are different levels, there will be a current, but in series, one battery will be overcharged or possibly killed.

    I don't understand the diagram, main switching transistor acts more like a diode in series with 8.2 resistor at full mains potential!! If the transistor endures maybe base biasing transistor will turn off the first cycle, then how will the second cycle starts again? Up to my understanding, that 3.5M resistor be connected to mains positive to start oscillation then it might work, but still no snubber etc...

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  6 лет назад +1

      The transistor doesn't work like a diode. The circuit oscillates because of the positive feedback from the auxiliary winding. The auxiliary winding can supply much more current into the base than the 3.9M resistor, so the resistor has almost no effect after the startup. The current from the feedback winding is what turns the transistor fully on. The auxiliary transistor can turn the main transistor off, but once the main transistor is off, there's no current going through the 8.2 ohm resistor, the auxiliary transistor turns off and the main transistor can turn back on :).

    Battey supply he he :-D, we like ching-lish :-D.
    That circuit looks similar to the other 18650 charger you showed, but a little better.
    Shame there is no opto feedback and emi capacitor, ahh well its cheap.
    Same auto reverse polarity i.c.
    The two transistor circuit is a bit minimal, but the 12v/5v hard drive caddy supplys are not much better, and they last a decent time.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 лет назад

      Why would it need opto feedback? A little bit of voltage sag with current might even help the HotChip run less hot! Keeping in mind HotChip is a specialised linear regulator.

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  7 лет назад +3

      The 2-transistor power supply topology is actually not bad at all. A lot of TV's and CRT monitors used this. It works really well. It only needs a to add bridge rectifier, fuse, inrush resistor or NTC, EMI filter, snubber and so. No other transistor or chip is necessary.

    To upozornenie proti prepólovaniu je tam asi kvôli tomu, aby obidva články boli pripojené v tej istej polarite...

    • @DiodeGoneWild
      @DiodeGoneWild  7 лет назад +1

      To je dobrý vysvětlení. Sice to má automatickou polaritu, ale právě protože jsou obě baterie paralelně, nesměj se tam dát náhodně. Akorát je divný, že ta výchozí polarita je opačně. Ono jí to sice detekuje a otočí, ale kdyby se tam dal článek vybitej skoro na nulu, tak ho to bude nabíjet opačně.

    no core disassembly and turns count? That tells me you liked it and didnt want to destroy it:). By the way this auxiliary feedback winding which is proportional to the secondary is the evolution the chinese made to the switching flybacks...In order not to use an optocoupler and secondary tl431 or zener and reduce cost...By a simulation i had made on LTspice i say that it also lowers primary voltage spikes and ringing on T(off) (voltage spike 450V on self oscillation Vs 550V of regular optocoupled flybacks) of the flyback so reduces the need for a BA159 or other diode snubber or supressor circuit on primary but didnt made a real experiment on oscilloscope though to prove this. :D:D:D:D
