    This actually a very good DIY tutorial especially for those who are nervous about public toilets especially these days. I laughed when you showed us that the car is your bathroom stall but it makes perfect sense if you're in a car camping campground. There's no real privacy there! Good stuff

    Great toilet option. I do the same thing with one added step. I line the contractor bag with a tall kitchen bag and then add the litter. When, or after solids are deposited I cinch down the draw string of the kitchen bag and push it down into the bottom of the contractor bag then line it with a fresh kitchen bag. When it is full just tie up the contractor bag and it is all self contained. I wish I knew this when the kids were young.

    My wife and I have been using this setup for about a year now. It makes camp trips so much more enjoyable. We also picked up one of the 1-person shower tents and now have our own restroom at campsites.

    Little tip for everyone, we live in a van with a diy composting toilet that is also just a bucket but with a urine seperater. If you are only doing number 2s and not introducing urine you can just put sawdust in and over the top and it won't smell. No need for chemicals and our 5 gallon bucket will stay smell free for 2 of us for at least 2 weeks before needing to be emptied.

    I've used my lidded, bucket-in-a-hassock porta-potty for years now. I found that PINE PELLETS are much easier to handle and lighter weight than clay cat litter- NO ODOR, NO MESSY FLUIDS and SUPER EASY DISPOSAL in any available waste container. I line the inner bucket with a basic plastic bag, and add only a cup or two of horse stall pine pellets, which are very inexpensive at $6 for 40 lbs.. The pellets absorb the liquid and swell up into light sawdust.
    Traveling alone, this system lasts me 2-4 days before having to discard the bag. If I have to poop, I might lay a separate bag on top with some pellets for quick disposal. And/or I may sprinkle in POO POWDER, which encapsulates the poop into an odorless gel.

    I'm telling you, I'm 63 yo van lifer. A steel coffee can, a sizeable rubber hose cut to the circumference of the can with a slit cut down the middle pressed down on the can rim for a seat, but before that line can with 2-4 gallon trash bags for strength, I use any bottle for the #1, a women can use a kayak pee bottle for sale at many outfitters sailing kayaks or online. It is so small you can sit in the back seat of any car. I have used mine for years and by the way it is accurate ounce you seat yourself securely.

    From a full timer. Ditch the chemicals. Use cedar or pine pet bedding instead of kitty litter. Separate poop and pee. Dump the pee on a plant(they will thank you). Save up the poop for several days by using the pet bedding. Then dispose of it like getting rid of a doggie bag. Contractor bags on outer layer. Doubled grocery store or kitchen bags interior get thrown away. Easy peasy.

    • @badderthanyou

      How do you seperate pee exactly?

    • @zofiamroz3852
      @zofiamroz3852 6 месяцев назад

      @@badderthanyou Pee into a different container, like a plastic box like thing made for hospital use then pour it into a small bag with absorbent jell powder that turns the whole mix into a jell. That prevents the bag from leaking, which you throw into any trash container found along your route.

    works beautifully! thank you so much! We had part of your system in place, but you gave us the finishing touches. I might add that extra-light cat litter is now available, if weight is an issue.

  • @murphragous
    @murphragous 4 года назад +29

    Just a thought on the condensation issue. In between uses you could pop the seat off and twist or fold the bag closed to keep all the moisture in the bag rather than on the bottom of the seat lid.

    • @Guy_de_Loimbard
      @Guy_de_Loimbard 2 года назад +3

      Then you have to handle a moist bag to re-seat it around the bucket edge. I'm not sure that's an improvement.

    We have been using this same system for a year or so. I had a problem with how short it was. No problem, just stack another couple of buckets and viola the height was up by 2 inches. Was wonderful when my knees gave me problems. I highly recommend everyone going to this solution. There are so many beautiful areas being trashed by cat holes and TP left all over the grounds. Some don't bother digging cat holes so you have that mess and the TP. They will start shutting these BLM areas down. Thank you the information in this video.

    Nice system . If I know I will be gone on a long BP-ing trip I take a stripped down , THIN toilet seat . It is just the seat of a cheap seat from Wally . Lid removed , hinges removed and MANY holes drilled into it for weight savings . Then I take some Bio bags from Kroger that degrade underground in 30 days . Leave camp and find stump or log of the right height . Cut some legs for the FRONT that I attach thru some of the holes towards the front with screws . Works stellar !! No squating and spraying your legs or feet when having problems . Have used it MANY times on stacked rocks in Colorado , The whites , Pictured Rocks and many others . After the first time I sprayed my pants , socks and shoes . I never wanted that to happen again . Yes , I do have to carry a BP-ing shovel . GUESSING with all the drilled holes to reduce weight and making MANY screw hole options . I'd say it weight MB a 1/2 lb . Am glad to carry it !! I'm going to try S&L's system for truck camping and hunting now though . Thanks S&L . Another good one !! Forgot to say . The sons and I carry our own bags and Sanitary wipes . We have all used this seat happily for a few days while staying in the Mtns of Colorado . We each clean the seat when done , and clean the seat before each use . We use the RED Wet Ones that kill 99.9 % :D ... Gubs

    We have used this system for many years. One thing different. Instead of using the crushed rock kitty litter which doesn't absorb that much liquid we used the PAPER PELLETS kitty litter. The paper absorbs a lot more. I bought the big bag of it and divided it up into quart ziploc bags for each use.

    My wife and I use a portable toilet with fold down legs. It utilizes bags that have some chemical powder in them that treats poop so you can throw the sealed bag in any garbage. That is a HUGE benefit as we do not carry around poop. Just put a bag over the rim and under the seat, do business, seal the bag with the sticky tape and fold the toilet legs back up. A little more expensive but worth every penny!

    I actually use something similar full time at home.
    Only one bathroom in my house downstairs, and I’m upstairs.
    Originally got it for “emergencies” when the other one was occupied or for storms.
    It works well enough that I use it full time.
    I have a “luggable loo” and whatever random bucket that was available at the time. ( basically same equipment)
    I don’t have the crate, but great idea👍
    I use tidy cats litter and don’t notice a smell myself unless I have neglected something.
    Using an empty laundry soap bottle for urine will also help with the smell as it doesn’t react with solid wastes and the residual soap floats on top further reducing smells.
    I did as an experiment one time see how long I could go without changing the bag and was able to fill the bucket with no issues. ( it’s good to know capabilities of your equipment before an emergency requires it )
    I prefer flush toilets myself, but this is a very inexpensive and easy option that works for camping, rvs, or any other situation that you might find yourself in.

I have everything I need except the blue packs and a good seat for my bucket soon to be remedied. Only problem with the backseat is, I have a 2022 Taco and the seats fold down. Luke, You, Sir!, are a VERY lucky man! Not only is your wife pretty but she also goes with you car camping, overlanding, backpacking, and sometimes allows you to go by yourself without too much, if any, whining that you're not at home when TSHTF like when that guy rolled his car into your wall and creek the other day. You've got it made Man! I have been trying to convince my wife to just go on a small, short distance day hike, or an overnighter backpacking trip or camping trip, just to see if she likes it, for years. I am almost to the point of giving up and just going on my own with old friends of mine. You're a lucky Man, Boss! I'm jealous. It's all good, however, because I am still living and existing on the grassy side of the grass while still breathing air and not dirt, right!!! Rock On Brother! that is a a great system we used a similar system for over 30 years then I discovered what Cabela’s calls the WAG system stands for waste alleviation and gelling like your system it can handle multiple users and be changed every day or be single use change each time it is a two bag system the outer bag is sealable the inside bag comes with a powder already in it that turns liquids into a gel and it makes solids breakdown quickly and covers up odors and when it is time too change bags you just seal it up and dispose of it in the regular garbage they are a little pricey at 12 for $30.00 each bag also includes toilet paper and wet wipes but I prefer my normal tp it is a little easier and faster and you don’t have to carry anything extra like the bio blue and the cat litter just another option for you and your listeners

      Good one, although I suspect Luke didn't realize the pun when he said it.

      I too spelled it in my brain differently than he intended (notice how I avoided using the word 'head' in this context) and let out a well deserved 2nd grade chuckle...I feel more comfortable knowing I'm not alone.

      I am not a tree hugger or anything But I just think about all of the Heavy duty bags and how long they take to decompose. I know they say those bags can take over 10 years.

    I have cats and when I thought of a DIY bucket, I too thought of kitty litter. I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in thinking this way! Thank you for sharing! :-)

    My inexpensive overlanding toilet is a shovel and a roll of toilet paper, keep it simple.

    I use mine in my hunting tent. I bought the lid for about $15 on Amazon, the 5 gallon bucket at Home depot for less than $5. I do use kitchen 13 gallon bags with kitty litter. It is a one time use then throw out the bag and start new. I noticed the handle would not fit over the lid so I made one out of paracord. I keep a smaller container with toilet paper, wipes and hand sanitizer inside the bucket until I am ready to use it, then I take it out, put in the kitty litter and am good to go. I sometimes put several bags on the bucket at once and use one at a time.
