    Really appreciate the fact that you called out the whole thing with LUTs and how they’re no silver bullet. I understand creators need to pay the bills and LUTs are an easy way to create passive income but so many tubers push their LUTs and babble on about how they’ll make any footage look amazing when as you said they typically won’t work too well on clips that werent correctly shot.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +1

      For sure, LUTs are good but there's a fair bit of miss-selling going on I think it would be fair to say.

    Appreciate the 'keep it simple' approach to these LUTs. Simple is good, for then you're not painting yourself into a corner with a heavy, over-processed look which won't age well. Better to keep things minimal and light for longevity, I say!

    Hi, great video :) It looks like you are colorgrading noral profile video, not the log file, am I correct? If so, was it h.264 (8 bit) or h.265 (10 bit) vdeo?

    My question is when you shot the footage in Dlog-M H265 what is your final output after you done color correction and grade is still H265? or H264 now the final?

  • @EtiRats
    @EtiRats 5 лет назад

    Question from a newbie.... please excuse the ignorance. I understand how colour correction, followed by colour grading should work on a still image, but specifically with drone video footage I'm a bit more perplexed.
    The drone is continually moving, and depending on lighting conditions on the day, surely the footage contrast, saturation and illumination levels will be constantly varying as the angle between camera lens and sunlight varies. ie some of the footage may be filmed down-sun, some into-sun and some across-sun. Scattered cloud may cause some bright and some dull conditions. So is applying post correction and grading a constantly varying process? Do video clips have to be eternally split and analysed with corrections applied to achieve consistent results and an overall uniform appearance to the finished footage...?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +2

      Great question! 99% of the time you need to shoot footage with reasonably constant exposures, thereby doing away with the need to address the problem you mention. So swinging a camera round from looking at the shade to looking into the sun is not an option. In Hollywood they might tackle an inside to outside shot for example by doing an iris-pull, so changing the aperture mid-shot. Their lenses have step-less, smooth apertures. This isn't an option for us though! Broadcast cameras for news reports and such like will shoot on auto exposure but I'd strongly advise against this if you're going for a cinematic look. So the painful reality is that we need to shoot accordingly, picking an exposure that suits all eventualities for that shot. If that's not going to work then we need to ditch the shot and move on to plan B.

    Any suggestions as my settings follow the film poet at 0,-1,0 for the Mavic 2 Pro... will I need to increase contrast in post for the LUT pack to as you made it? Awesome content and keep it coming

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад

      Cheers! For sure, just add a bit more contrast and use the histogram as your guide. Thing is, even on 0,0,0 you need to add some contrast because the image is flat. If you shoot on -1, -2 or -3, just add a bit more in post. Whether it's this drone or any other drone/camera, follow that formula and you'll be sorted.

    Nice video! I mix some clips for my travel video, which are from my Mavic 2 Pro and my Osmo Pocket. In this case, do I have to color grade the stuff from my Osmo with other LUTs? Or is it the idea to stay with the same LUT for every clip in the whole film?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +1

      Hey! Assuming there are not wild colour differences between the two cameras (e.g. reds look red on one camera and orange on the other) then the LUTs will work across the entire project. I haven't used the Osmo Pocket but I'm assuming that in decent light the colours are perfectly fine and compatible with the M2P.

    Love your stuff but I wonder about the rest of us guys that can't afford the very newest Drones that come out or that can't afford the very expensive editing software. Dropped frames at the time of filming? You need a faster memory card if this is happening. For dropped frames when editing we use proxy editing in FCPX.

  • @StevenPeeters
    @StevenPeeters 5 лет назад

    Question: if you use multiple camera's and you stretch the histogram on both and then apply the same LUT on both, will you get the same result on both shots and will they certainly match? Or is there more to it when using multiple cameras (e.g. mixing camcorder shots with GoPro and DJI footage)

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +3

      Good question. If you'd said two high end cameras, e.g. M2P and a Panasonic GH5 for example (that's our setup BTW) then the answer would be yes, pretty much. Both these cameras film high quality video that represent colours pretty accurately so once you've evened up exposures then basically the only thing left to do is apply your grade. With lower quality cameras there might be more work to do. For example, with the Mavic Air, if you shoot in low light, there is a red cast over everything. If you were matching that with the GH5 you would need to adjust for this. Camcorders, GoPros etc, you are likely to have similar issues. Exposure-wise the concept is universal, but when you start to get into matching colours then you need a colour checker, especially if there is a miss-match in quality between the cameras. We'll probably do a video on this at some point!

      Hey! 90% of shots you can't see the barrel distortion so we just leave it. As for the ones where it might be visible, we use the Fisheye effect in FCPX and turn it slightly negative and that takes care of things without any noticeable deterioration to the footage.

    I was told that if you don’t drop your contrast, saturation and sharpness down in the camera settings you will get an anomaly where the water or other things like roof shingles or fence sections will run together and look off. I don’t remember the term. Begins with an A I believe. But that’s while shooting video. Also can you say if Cyberlink Power director 17 is good enough to use? It seems that all of the RUclips photography people are using Adobe Premiere.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 лет назад +1

      Sounds like your referring to aliasing. Like you say, you see it on roof tiles and such like. I'm not aware that contrast/sat/sharpness have an impact on that mind you. PowerDirector is definitely good enough to use. 99% of what we edit could be done on the most basic software. Simple cuts and transitions like cross dissolves and fades to black. Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premier are the leading 'pro' choices but there is absolutely no need to use these.

    • @Hawkeye-AS24
      @Hawkeye-AS24 5 лет назад

      Drone Film Guide yes it’s aliasing. The first time I encountered it was with MP2 while flying over water. It was aliasing like crazy. Lol. I then by chance saw a video on that very subject. He said when you drop sharpness -1 contrast -2 and saturation-1 it removes that problem. I tried it and it worked.
