    I've used a label maker for years to mark the pockets on my Greenstalks. When you start having several of the same colors, it's easy to forget which is the one you made notes on. The labels survive the sun and water and just peel off to move to another pocket or to replant something different. I bought some of the vinyl labels last fall that I plan to try out as well. Another thing to keep in mind is what plants are heavier feeders or need certain amounts of water and keep the ones on a similar group together. And always keep the height and bushiness of each plant in mind when deciding where in the tower to plant. I have 9 Greenstalk towers that I have had since they started as I am local to the company.

    I use a black permanent marker and number each tier. A big 1, 2, 3, etc. on each tier. On each pocket I mark A through F on the little rim across the top. I then will put the information of the planting in my regular journal. Bloomsdale spinach in tier 9, pockets A, B, C, for example. Maybe another type spinach in tier 9, pockets D, E, F. This simplifies things for me.

    This was so timely. It is my second year for greenstalks. I have two more arriving any day for a total of five! I listen to your videos as I drive my courier route and these suggestions for planning were perfect. Downloaded the journal and filled it out meticulously. This will be a great year of gardening. Love your videos.

    Last year I put garlic in some of my my Greenstalk pockets. Little did I know that I would need to take it apart to harvest the garlic. I thought I would be able to just pull the bulb out. That wasn’t possible, and it was a lot of work. This year I’m devoting the entire Greenstalk to strawberries. They worked out well last year, and I like that the strawberries hang over and don’t touch the soil. I also love how it looks outside my living room window. I just received my bare root strawberries and will be planting them today in the open pockets. Excited for spring!!

    I'm making a thermal raincoat for my greenstalk. I'm making it from a poncho and thermal blanket and gorilla tape 🎉

    Here in Zone 9b I use my Greenstalk exclusively for strawberries and it works great. I rotate it 90 degrees each day and that seems to keep growth fairly uniform. I enjoy your informative videos.

    I didn't get quite that organized, but I did take a big black marker and write a letter and number on each pocket. Each tier got a letter and each pocket got a number. A1-6, B1-6, etc. Now I just record what I put in each pocket in my journal. Last weekend I planted Mizuna seeds in A1-3, Arugula in B1-3, Cilantro in C1-3, and two different kinds of beets in D. I haven't planted the other tiers yet. The unplanted pockets in those first three tiers will get planted in 2 or 3 week increments for some succession crops. It's probably too soon for me to be planting seeds outdoors (Northern Colorado), but I figure that the groundhog has spoken, so I'm starting early.

      I did the same thing except my tiers are numbers and my pockets are A through F. Simplifies things.

    I have 4 Greenstalks & I’ve dedicated 1- with a variety salsa peppers ( this my 3rd year & I do refresh each layer with Esphoma gardentone & compost) they have been prolific but I do support each plant with a dowel in each pocket. 2nd one I’ve done a variety of bush beans, 3rd- I did with lettuce & a couple herbs & green onions at base as it’s outside my fenced in garden to deter bunnies, rodents, 4- is planted with Everbearing Strawberries💕

    Awesome video, too bad I have no need for a green stalk.
    However, I sent a friend of mine a green stalk last year for his balcony garden in Chicago, he loves it, so he says.
    I will send him this video

    Hi. I am grateful to have overwintered Seascape strawberries successfully so far in our GS, which speaks to my dilemma. We are now in zone 6a.
    The strawberries were very productive in their second year, last year. Only problem is that when I disassembled the GS for overwintering, I noticed that the middle has become incredibly root bound. The grower I bought the bare root plants from suggested letting the strawberries produce their initial crop before replacing the plants. But that will be summer and create a bit of a mess disassembling it when there are plants growing in the lower levels. This is to mitigate the fact that 3 y.o. plants produce less than younger ones; replanting should improve results going forward. First year plants also tend not to be as productive as 2 y.o. plants. We are now in year 3.
    Votes for replacing the strawberries in early spring?
    Votes for replacing the strawberries in summer?

      @GardenerScott  2 месяца назад +1

      I like to pot up the runners and replace the old plants in summer but that is more difficult in the GS. You’ll find more plants or roots available to buy in spring.

    @Gardener Scott - Timely video. Thank you. Getting ready to set up my new Greenstalk. Would be interesting to see how peppers do in a Greenstalk - top tier only? Question for you regarding soil mixture. When you filled up the pockets with a soil mixture did you mix in any soil from your garden? Wondering if it would be a good thing to do since there is biological activity going on in the soil that you would not have with a potting soil mix. Thanks.

      Peppers do great on the top tier but interfere a bit with watering. I put them in the lower tiers.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 месяца назад +1

      I didn’t add garden soul but getting that boost of biology is a good idea. I used compost.

      @@GardenerScottThanks. Since this is my first year with one - was not really sure what types of plants I could reasonably plant, was surprised when you mentioned peppers. I was not really thinking of peppers since they do get a bit bushy.

    How much soil do you need per tier on the green stalk?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 месяца назад

      For the Leaf planter it's about .75 cu ft and for the Original planter it's about 1 cu ft.

    You must have to turn those everyday correct are they on rollers or something.

    • @Barrell60
      @Barrell60 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes they are on roller bases, and you can get a spinner base. I turn mine everyday sometimes every other day. If you have plants that will handle shade, then you can do every other day or longer depending on what you planted.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 месяца назад

      It depends on the plants as to how often to turn them. They have options for spinners and wheels to make it easy.
