  • Hello everyone,
    Today we take a look at the Whitwell and Reepham Railway's Diesel Gala - of which Lawrie's Ruston 48, Sir William McAlpine was one of the visitors for.
    But in true LMM fashion, everything didn't run smoothly....
    A massive thank you to the Whitwell and Reepham Railway for inviting us and Sir William to take part in the gala.
    If you want more information on the Whitwell and Reepham Railway, check out their website here: whitwellstation.com/
    A massive thank you to Rob, Nick Dan, and the others who went above and beyound working on the 48.
    A video featuring:
    Lawrie - Presenter & Loco Owner, very proud to have the 48 out and about
    Nick - Cameraman, excited to see the 48 out.
    Additional footage from Rob, John, and Matt.
    An edit by Lawrie

The radiator from 303, which you saved from the scrap heap to restore and which sat for over 30 years comes to the rescue of the 48 without a single leak. Bookies wouldn't give you odds on that. Man, some engines really do have stage fight. Yes, stage fight, as in once they're on the stage they will fight with you. Also I got some inspiration so I wrote this little poem:
    Gasoline will talk to you, if you learn its language
    Steam will sing a song, but you have to know the chorus
    Electric makes a tidy list and tells you all that’s wrong
    But Diesel’s apathetic, and likes to hear you curse
    Diesel’s not like other girls, she’s ugly and she’s mean
    She’ll gas the whole darn place, and make sure nothing’s ever clean
    She’ll bump you and she’ll tease you, but when all is said and done
    There’s still some silver linings to these angry old machines
    Gasoline will break and will throw a fit and moan
    Steam can blow up in your face and often makes you groan
    Electric likes to brush the issues deep beneath the rug
    But Diesel will keep going ‘til it rattles off its lugs
    Gas is needy and won’t start unless everything’s all right
    Steam will get dirt everywhere and needs attention all the time
    Electric can short and blow a fuse and leave you without light
    But Diesel won’t give up unless you do and will long keep up the fight
    So next time your diesel just won’t start or move an inch
    Remember this advice, ‘cause it will save you in a pinch
    Diesels will talk back to you, and they’ll find the lines to cross
    Instead take charge, she’ll start right up, if you show her who’s the boss.
    I got some inspiration from a clip from the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, but the idea came from this video here. Hope y'all enjoy!

    I remember a grand Winter 'Steam' Gala at the North Norfolk, January 2006 (?), somehow consisted on-the-day purely of N7/4 69621, and the Class 31 dragging J15 65462 around in light-steam, as 65462's rear tube-plate was leaking "like a waterfall" and so frankly ought have been outright condemned!😬 Sooo, on the bright side, Lawrie: 2.5 diesels and a steam loco' at a Diesel Gala is a better showing for the W&RRly team than that 2006 NNRly event sadly was.😅 Good work keeping the show on the road.👍😊

    As only the 4th blue 'honorary diesel' I'm aware of which has been dipped in woad AND been given the double arrow treatment, I just HAD to check on Agecroft No.3's pedigree ... and was delighted to find siblings Agecroft Nos.1 and 2 are also still with us. No.1(in a charming green livery) apparently lives at MOSI, but has been seen at the NRM - in steam - and No.2 at the Ribble Steam Railway (seems to be out of ticket at present, but has run in preservation ... doing stints as "Percy").

    Is the Ransomes of the shunter diesel, the same Ransomes, Simms and Jeffries, who made lawn mowers. In the mid 1950's, my parents had a Ransomes two stroke lawn mower. Our very elderly and not very fit gardener was an ex western front railwayman of WW1 who had been invalided out after his second gassing. He used occasionally to take me down to Keith Junction goods yard, where he had been a driver, until health retirement and blag me totally illegal footplate rides around the yard aged around 10. The Ransomes mower did not like slow running and poor old Euan the gardener could not walk behind it fast enough to stop the plug oiling up. I talked to my father and he agreed to replace the two stroke Ransomes with a four stroke Atco, that Euan could manage.

    Once you get your coolant system fixed you should get all the water out of the system and go back with Evans antifreeze so your system has no pressurization. It will help your old parts last a lot longer.

    Why is it that some older diesel engines have the bars linking the wheels ? is it just left over from the steam era or was there a practical reason ?

    • @BrooksMoses
      @BrooksMoses 20 дней назад +1

      The bars (known as "rods" usually) are the power transmission from one axle to the other, just as they are on steam locomotives. If you look at the "Shredded Wheat" Fowler in particular, you can see that it has two rods on each side. One rod goes between the two axles, and the other goes forward to a crank arm that's on the electric motor, and that's how the power is transmitted from the electric motor to the drive axles.
      The Ruston 48 instead has chain drives to the axles, which you can see quite well in the "camera between the tracks" shot. However, it's a quite lightweight locomotive, and I think it's near the limit of the amount of power a chain drive can easily transmit. Also, it's a lot more convenient to oil and maintain rods rather than chains because you don't have to crawl under the locomotive to get to them.
      Some early locomotives also would have had a chain drive or gear drive from the motor to one axle, and then use drive rods to power the other axle (or, in the case of three-axle locomotives, both other axles).
      The reason most modern diesels don't have linking bars like this is that these days the usual arrangement is a separate motor for each drive axle, connected to the axle with a gear drive.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  20 дней назад +2

      It's not just older locos.
      Chain drive was fine, the 88 is the same, but rods were used to transfer power from one place - gearbox, hydraulic motor or traction motor to the wheels.
      Modern mainline stuff has motors on more wheels.

    May I ask, how are you operating trains in the modern era without airbrake? Forgive me if I'm wrong but your Ruston or that brake van as. Far as I can tell are not fitted with airbrake so how are you able to run public trains with them in that configuration? Im working Narrow gauge (LCLR) and even we are required to fit airbrake (all the locos have at minimum a dump valve but are required to run a train with an air brake fitted loco)

  • @HowardLeVert

    Two thoughts occur to me: one, is it possible to retro-fit the lights on the 48DS with red/white LED assemblies? You may not want to do this of course because of originality reasons, but I think it was done to the Swedish railcar on the Nene Valley Railway - and two, can your original radiator be repaired? Of all things, I remember the proper steel/copper radiator on my late father's Ford Zodiac being repaired, pressure tested and painted by a company in the mid-1980s.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  20 дней назад +1

      Yes, I'd just need to install a switch to run it when one is lit the other is red.
