Excellent video. Easily answered some questions both my wife and I have about our move to live in our home in Ocotal. Keep up the great work. Pura Vida hermano.
I love the renting idea. How about renting a Tico house like Mike's for a year. At $250 a month that would be $3k a year + basic expenses. Live a simple life and snowbird as you please.
Great video. A 6 month Visa for Snowbirds would be a great idea, in my opinion. I have not done a border run as of yet, but our neighbors have and usually fly out for a week and spend money that they should be spending in CR. There is alot of money that is being spent in Panama or Nicaragua, that could be spent in CR businesses!
Frankly I would pay $100 a month overstay if it did not count as overstay. I rather remain here in Costa Rica to spend my money. But too many issues prevent me from applying for Residency. #1 is I have an Apostilled Birth Certificate issued i 1971. The following year all the government records were destroyed in a fire. Immigration wants an Apostilled Birth Certificate issued within 60 days And it goes downhill from there. A good option for Visa run is Green Airways in Costa Rica, San Jose to Bocas del Toro Panama. Buses treat all passengers like cattle. This is a small airline flying dual prop. so get around most of the airport security as it takes off and lands at the Domestic Terminal.
Joana from CRIE helped me get permanent residency and was amazing! When she walks into the immigration office with 4-5 of her clients she is treated like a celebrity, everyone knows her there.

Glenn is so knowledgeable and shoots straight from the hip. Thanks for a great video! I started on Rentista 20 months ago and although I have a file number it's still at the stage where they just say they received the paperwork (that was filed on March 3rd) so it is a very long process. I had 2 questions that, if not to ignorant, maybe can be answered in the next video. 1) Do you have to be a citizen to avoid the long immigration line at SJO or LIR or can you do this with temp or perm residency? 2) I believe there is a fee when you get your temp residency that is held as a "deposit" in case they ask you to leave the country (I know I am saying that incorrect). Is that moved over when you apply for perm residency or do you have to pay that again? THANKS to you both Mike and Glenn!!
Thank you, guys! Awesome video, very helpful. Please do more content on residency and immigration. You bring up great points that just don’t come up in a regular research. 👍

Hi Michael, Chris Nolan here. It would be really helpful for your followers and viewers if you would mention or publish the date of your respective RUclips video’s FYI.
Be aware Costa Rica law system encourages squatters. I have been fighting for my home for a year and the system have not help me at all. The system remove all owners rights and gives your home to the squatters.
When arriving, at the airport immigration, is it best to say you are a tourist and get the 90 day visa or let them know that you are planning to apply for temporary residency?
A year ago Michael Alan posted one of his great informational videos here and interviewed a real estate agent named "Dan." Glenn sort of looks like Dan's twin brother. Are they related, the same person, or do all gringos look alike? Thanks for a fabulous video.
Hello Luke! From our experience with this residency category, Immigration (DGME) does not allow the funds to be in (savings or investment) accounts.. only in checking accounts.
My wife, 7 year daughter and I are in the process of moving to CR at the end of this month....we have been coming down for the last 13 years or so for a week or two at a time, so we decided to go the rentista route instead of PT out of covid traveling concerns at the borders as well as having our daughter not miss school. No US bank would give me the required bank letter due to the necessary wording so we will have to deposit the $60k in a Costa Rica bank. My question is should we not be able to secure remote work that pays the bills or if we just think that after a year, living in CR is not for us, will we be able to wire the $60k back to our US bank before our residency kicks in? I've been told the wait time is now 18-24 months due to covid, which is quite a long time to have that amount of money tied up. Appreciate any insight you could provide...thanks.
Wow, the 18-24 month application process is so long!! And of course, one would have to keep the 60K untouched while waiting for the application to go through. It's great that receiving income from remote work while in CR is legal!
Hello Michael, Based on your discussion with Glen can you let me and other viewers to know when is the best time to begin applying for Temporary Residency? More specifically, how much time ahead of when someone actually moves to CR can they begin the process with an attorney or a service like Immigration Experts. Secondly, do you have any updates on the Newly Passed Immigration law and when will be actually implemented?
You should always get your documents while you are in your home country. Make sure there are apostles or authenticated as necessary. And you should send them to the company that you’re using for the immigration service so they can check to make sure everything is perfect before you come to Costa Rica. Also remember that your documents can’t be older than six months when they are submitted to immigration in Costa Rica
Would it be possible to apply for the Inversionista Category with the combination of land purchase plus the cost of building a house on the land? ie. buying land for 50K plus building a casita for $100K
Hello, yes. You would need to register the value of the property in the National Registry (Registro). Note: Immigration (DGME) can request proof of said valuation at their own discretion. Also, please note, Immigration (DGME) has not yet implemented internal procedures to work with the recently passed law that lowers the property value requirement to $150,000... Internally, they are still working with the $200,000 value requirement.
Foreign citizens can open an account with a passport but only run $1000 a month. if you start a corporation and register it with the tax department. You can deposit as much as you want.
Questions.... 1. Regarding Pensionado, all information is related to a couple. I am single, 72 years old with SSA a little over $1000. Is that ok? 2. Can I get my docs now then get them apostilled 2 or 3 months later, and if so, will the residency be given timely... before the 6 months? I'm assuming the 6 months begins rolling upon upon the date of the Apostille.... But the date is the docs. 3. I have a marijuana and a cocaine conviction from the 90s. Will I be denied due to those convictions? Thank you!

Hello, most residents are paying into the healthcare system because they live here full-time. If a person a person plans to be outside the country for X month(s), they could stop paying their CAJA payments but they will have to pay the late/non-payments to continue to receive healthcare once they return.

I understand about pensionado but what is you're disabled and receive social security benefits every month. Does that count too?
I could be wrong but as long as you can show 'guaranteed' money ($1000./mo) from the government every month, you should be good.
Yes, if you are disabled and receive Social Security benefits ($1000 or more) every month you qualify.
If you have $1000 or more you qualify

$1000 a month for one. $1500 a month for 2, and $500 more for each dependent.

I truly wish the US actually would live up to that ideal image and government. But it has gone downhill since WWII. Too much power always is a bas thing.
@@ab-km1xk Another ignorant fool told me of all the hurricanes in Costa Rica. There has never been a storm rated as a hurricane, Tropical Storms but below a CAT 1. He told me how he would never move here. He lives in Baltimore and I would never go there even for a connecting Flight. And yes I have been to Baltimore 50 years ago, but he has never been here. a b you seem to be missing all the videos and news reports of US Police killing people, especially Blacks. If a cop kills anyone here it is rare the cop does not go to prison. It better be last resort. Plus the police do not carry electric torture devices and their handguns limmited to .380 or 9 mm, with solid jacketed bullets like is required by the Geneva's Conventions.
In Costa Rica is there income taxes on foreign income?
You won't have to pay taxes on anything you earn outside of Costa Rica
No, none. And you geyt a $107,300 US Income Tax Exemption yearly.
What's the cannabis situation like? :)
Hello Cinderelly, the usage of Cannabis/Marijuana is still illegal in the country.
It’s every where as it should be because it’s medicine 💓
I think they are trying to pass a bill to start producing it for medicinal purposes.
Recreational is still illegal.
It's being delayed for a month (starting Oct. 21) by a minority group of religious politicians. I bet it'll be approved anyways for medicinal and industrial purposes by the end of 2021.
In the legislative assembly ( Asamblea Legislativa) is like the congress they passed in the first votes I think they are waiting for the second votes
We have pension however we are 58 & 60
The age is not essential as long as you have a pension of $1000 USD per month
What's does he charge?
What is Glen's contact information?
I contacted CRIE about 3 weeks ago with some questions and got a response back the same day saying that someone would get back to me, waited about 2 weeks, no response
sent another message a few days ago, got a response saying someone would get back to
me, still nothing. Are they still in business?
They reply to each and every email they get within one business day.
what a huge hassle, go to hawaii instead Americans
And pay 10 times more to live in Hawaii than it would in Costa Rica. Plus Costa Rica has National Health Care paying 100% while Hawaii only has Medicare paying 80% Not to mention the high crime in Hawaii. Car rentals tell you to leave the car unlocked, windows down to protect from forced entry damage.
Hmmm. What about the tax free aspect of living in CR !
Hawaii means US taxes.
