    Thanks much for the update. I applied for residency last November under the Investor category. My attorney thinks the process will be completed in March 2023, so 15 month time frame for me. I was only asked to go to San Jose city hall to get a document that shows my property’s value for real estate tax purposes was assessed at least $150k, which was very easy to do at no cost.

    I got my permanent residency in 2002. I adopted my ex-girlfriend's son, that is how I qualified. It took me a year and a half. Immigration at that time was a complete nightmare. It is much easier now. I renewed my residency {5 years}, on October 6th this year at immigration. If you are 65 or over, you now can renew residency directly at immigration on the same day. You need your police report, your receipt for the caja {monthly payment}, and your cedula that is expiring.

    It looks like if you are grandfathered in before March 2022 if you are not changing your residency status nothing changes, but if you are changing your status say from temporary to permanent resident then you are reassessed. Also if your partner dies and you were both originally on the same Caja again you are reassessed.

    Great info Michael. Thank you for sharing. We had our residency in 80 days with our good Attorney back in February 2022. We also have our drivers license now. We had to be residents for 92 days before qualifying for drivers license. We are pensioners so the paperwork was pretty fast. Everything in CR takes patients. I don't think if people DON'T or Can't except the ways here they won't do well here!! We personally love our lives here. We are grateful to be off THE HAMSTER WHEEL lifestyle!! Can you do a video on how to get permanent residency PLEASE ?? That will be our next step!? I know we have be residents and live here a certain amount of time.

      Have you been a Temporary Resident of Costa Rica for the past three years? If so, you may qualify for a Permanent Residency in Costa Rica. Permanent residency certainly comes with more benefits than temporary residency. For example, you have the majority of the rights of a citizen (except voting) and can work legally in Costa Rica as well.
      What do you need to get your Permanent status in Costa Rica?
      Specifications:
      • May apply after 3 years as a temporary resident;
      • Can work as an employee or independent worker;
      • Can own a company and receive dividends.

    We spent nearly two years trying to find property that wasn’t gringo priced, and we finally did. Two and a half hectares of flat farmland, river frontage, house, good road: a bit less than $40K. We can see Lake Nicaragua from our road, so residency became a bit less pressing for us living this close to the border. We put that on hold for now so maybe the backlog will have resolved itself by the time we’re ready to get serious about it. #HospitalMexico is the best. I’m still livid about the way Hospital San Carlos tried to kill me, and I hope the staff on the receiving end of the full bedpan I threw at them before walking out AMA will remember it for a long, long time.

CAJA from the information I have is the system is insolvent and unable to pay the pensions . The roads are deteriorating with no monies available to fix and unfortunately it took a mudslide that took out a bus down a cliff and people killed to bring attention of the corrupt previous government so yes be prepared to wait and wait for residency……..

      Married to a Costa Rican citizen? If so, you may qualify for Residency For Spouses Category. Foreigners who marry a Costa Rican resident are eligible for Temporary Residency, according to current immigration laws. Your marriage must be registered with the Civil Registry (Registro Civil).
      What do you need to get your Residency as a Spouse of a Costa Rican citizen?
      Requirements:
      • Must provide documentary proof of the marriage’s validity (photos of the wedding and other events, proof of cohabitation, and communication between spouses - phone records, e-mails, etc.);
      • Must be in Costa Rica at least 1 day per year.
