How do you know the difference between a resonance structure and the same molecule. By looking at the products for the first example, it appears as though it is the exact same structure.
Yes, they are the exact same structure. But once he labels the "C" carbon atoms it is no longer the same structure. Structure 1 has the water attached to C1 and structure 2 has water attached to C3 therefore it is no longer the same the structure. It is easier to see on structures with at least 4 carbon backbone, but it can be noted in this molecule nonetheless.
